just messing around w it for now, photographing dogs sitting and running, i don't believe it's going to obsolete the 100-400. i am going to try to put it thru some paces the upcoming months.
I will say this, It's perfect for my wife though...more later.
Hoping I get my "shipped" notification from B&H tomorrow...unless I can find one locally. None of the local stores seemed confident they would be getting it tomorrow. I envy you, at least until Monday or Tuesday of next week.
This lens has me pretty excited since I almost always need more reach from my 100-400 and usually end up cropping for tighter wildlife shots. Big Country, why do you say it won't obsolete the 100-400? So far it seems like the bokeh is a lot more pleasant than the 100-400 and it seems pretty sharp so I'm not seeing any downsides. Thanks for being an early adopter!
Nice samples of your beautiful dogs above, particularly assuming they're shot wide open (judging by the exif's) and on a pretty gloomy day. If it can track BIF's within reason (ie. similar to a 100-400), I'll be buying one.
very interesting example shots . they look good . id consider getting one and selling my 120-300 OS (non S) as doing that would give me the excuse to add a 70-200/2.8 mk2 to the bag as well
Thanks for posting the samples big country. These are a notch better than what I was expecting, especially the bokeh, which I find too nervous on my 100-400mm. I ordered the Tamron in late December and I'm hoping it arrives in 12 days when my wife is out of town for a week. That will solve, at least temporarily, the problem of explanation as well as providing me a few liberated days of shooting.
Awesome! I pre-ordered from B & H at the beginning of the year, we'll see when I get mine...I assume your local camera store got them in and called you? Considering the amount of gear you probably buy from them I can imagine that they would take care of you first before other pre-order clients.
Picked mine up locally too. I can say that I am THRILLED with the lens and glad that my 100-400 already has a new home. The Lowepro lens case 13x32cm is a perfect fit and the Acratech GP-S ballhead has a built in GIMBAL feature that will rock this lens!
What is interesting is that this lens is being compared to $2000 to $13000+ dollar lenses. The Tamron retails for a mere $1069 at this point.
It would make more sense to compare it to the non-L Canon lenses wouldn't it?
Does the 100-400 go to 600mm? Compare it then with the 100-400 with a TC on it
Comparing a zoom to primes is an interesting situation, what if Tamron moves to the next level and goes to 300/400/500/600 primes
I kinda get the feeling this Tamron may fall into a league its own and find a nice niche. I do think that the image IQ is not going to be the question, it will be the ability to have a very good focusing system and hold tight tolerances with use and weather changes. I wonder if Canon is willing to share all electronic focusing data with third party lens makers, after all it is their competition.
I'm am surely anticipating my outing this Sunday with mine I hope it does florals well
I am pleasantly surprised that I can micro adjust both ends of this lens on my Canon 6D. It totally recognizes the lens and lists it correctly. I too agree that this will not necessarily compete with the big whites, but for us folks that only had a 100-400, it is a most welcome addition!
