Thanks for braving the Polar Vortex to get these Karl.

IQ looks good SOOC in #1 at 500mm and f/6.3 (wide open)... your work-up Karl brought out nice sharp eye detail and is very encouraging to see. Well done.
The Lighthouse also looks good at 400mm, and the BCNH's look about how I would expect at that distance.

How was focus acquisition and tracking on the seagull in those poor light conditions?

Am I seeing some slight vignetting in 3 and 4?

Other impressions?

Thanks, Kirk

I don't have any data in good light Kirk to compare AF in this poor light. Low contrast is simply a challenge with any lens to get good focus lock and tracking but it worked.
Yes on some vignetting, however any camera body with the 'light optimizer' will likely null that out as I remember my 6D body doing a nice job of it when I had it.
I don't expect to have any solid impressions until I have some consistency in light and subject matter to experiment. It is like testing a race car on a wet surface and trying to analyze how it will perform under the right conditions. Only had a few brief moments of sun with no subjects to enjoy unfortunately.
The lighthouse at distance had a lot of blowing snow particles and there was water spray from behind, the sky and gradients in it were moody and uneven.
Lots to learn yet and I'm willing to take the time and discipline to get them in order...........
Karl

Would like to thank Al for the quick shoot here trying to keep all things equal.
In this case Tamron appears as the sharper of the two images

Anxious to see the images that will come in the next few weeks as weather gets better and good light is available more often.
We have plenty of sun here in SoCal already, but as a Nikon shooter I will have to wait a couple of months until that version is released.

Keep the images coming as often as you can Karl... we all appreciate it.

I have yet to use the lens under sunny conditions. In low light, it will sometimes not focus at all when it is wide open (not even hunting). I have to back it down to about 400mm before it will lock on to anything. Then, it's fine when I open it up again. I never had this problem with my Bigma, or Canon 400mm 5.6L.

Which camera body are you using?

Check your AF settings-

"Lens drive when AF impossible" should be set to ON.

My lens was there when I got home yesterday. After dinner, set up in house and took photos of a $20 bill from 24', focussing with LiveView. Also with 100-400 and 1.4X III and 400 5.6 with 1.4X III. I can see that at 600mm f/7.1 improves over f/6.3, and f/8 even more. So if light allows, f/8 looks really good.

It may be Friday before I get a chance to review photos, but if Friday is a nice day, I will probably choose to take the lens out on my kayak on a local bayou over staying home to review the $20 photos.

So far, it looks like a keeper. Will probably be selling my 400 5.6 to fund it.

I was kind'a expecting my canon mount 150-600mm today, judging from past experances with B&H shipping. I was sorely disapointed when I checked my tracking # to tonght the 21st. to find that it Departed NY the 18th at 2:50am. It said the next report would be Tuesday the 21st. I thought it probably meant I'd have it tuesday. I checked tonight Tuesday the 21st.and my lens has made it from NY, all the way across the lakes to Hodgkins ILL just out side Chicago. UPS must have walked it over. Now it looks like it's just in time for the big snow storm up there so I don't have any idea when I'll get it. Argggg! guess I can look at everybodies samples and test with envy.

I share your pain, my lens went from NJ and then to Chicago for 3 days.....

It should eventually ship out internationally in NJ, makes no sense at all.
