I wasn't going to make my annual trip to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC to see the famed cherry blossoms this year before I read the park service will cut down hundreds of the cherry trees near the water when they start to rebuild the century-old seawall in May 2024. The flooding at high tides has damaged the trees near the water and is hazardous to visitors. It's a 3-year project. I figured the place will look messy in the next three years and I may not see some of those bonsai looking old cherry trees arching over the water ever again. So I arrived there before sunrise, drove around to find parking for 20 minutes, ended up parking in a garage 2 miles away and took Uber to the basin. I missed the best light of the day by 30 minutes.
I am posting some shots taken with my infrared camera first, haven't had time to work on the color ones. But at a glance I didn't get that many color ones I like this year. Will see.

Thank you very much, gentlemen! I was surprised that I took a lot more pictures with the IR converted A7III than with the A7RV and A1 I also had with me that morning. Here are a couple more from the IR A7III. They all look the same after a while.

Here are a couple color ones from Friday morning. The cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin in DC peaked on March 17 this year, one of the earliest on record due to the wild winter. I really hope they will find ways to save at least some of the old trees by the water when they rebuild the seawall. IMHO, the famed Washington DC cherry blossoms will never be the same without those old bonsai-looking trees hanging over the basin.
