I enjoy your pictures of your beautiful city. We had a great time in Porto in April this year. A little side story about this picture, my wife and I were just wandering around the old streets in Porta and found this beautiful house, we came up from the street on the right in the picture, while I was taking pictures of house, a man on the left street in the picture kind of yelled at us and waved his hand to say no, he wasn't even in the picture. We didn't understand what he was saying and were wondering what the fuss was about. We walked away after getting a few pictures. I went back to the same location in the afternoon but this time by accident I came up from the street on the left, and saw the same guy we saw in the morning, he saw me with cameras and said something like: "no picture, people". I saw a few men coming in and out of the street. I believed they were dealing drugs. If I ran into a place like that in the U.S. I would probably get killed.

There are certain areas with some drugs traffic but there's no real danger during the day, at least that someone may shoot you. Probably I wouldn't go there at night.
It's disappointingly austere inside the thousand room 17th century Potala Palace. It was a winter palace that was situated close to the centres of Gelugpa power in nearby Drepung and Ganden. The Dalai Lama's people wanted to keep a watching brief on the troublesome bureaucrats. So it's more of a institutional presence and an expression of power than a typical inhabited medieval palace. Poorly lit and no electricity made it a difficult proposition in Lhasa's minus 20C temps. There are six or seven gold giant chortens inside. The largest contains 3800kg of pure gold, hundreds if precious gemstones and the body of the 5th DL. The DLs were carried to the top of a ramp aboard a palanquin, while the senior lamas were piggybacked up by servants.
