Looking at a Cattle Egret in Breeding Plumage.
Cropped and flipped; tripod mounted 100-400mm f4-f5.6 GM set to 400mm and A7rIII; silent shutter.
ISO 100, f5.6, 1/320 second.
Exposure corrected +0.83 Stops.

At Gatorland, Orlando or Kissimmee, FL.
I have switched on Eye-AF for Animals in my A9.
My eyes aren't good enough anymore to see in the EVF whether Eye-AF is effective or not.
Looking at these images Eye-AF certainly doesn't seem to get in the way, it may actually be doing its Job IMHO!
Sony ILCE-9 + FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS + 1.4X TC @ 560 mm, f/4.5, 1/640 s, ISO 4000.
Also these images are heavily cropped.
The A9 with 6,000x4,000 pixels seems to handle that well.
I used Focus Area Center or Flexible M.
These little birds move fast and erratically.
It's hard to predict where they will be next.
I either have my focus area on their head or I don't, handholding the FE 400/2.8 lens.
If I do the A9 focusses instantly and I get in this case an L burst of sharp images.
Of course, shooting would be doable but a bit harder with my A7r.2 or A7r.

K-H., my favorite AF setting in Ecuador is Tracking-AF with Selectable Assist Point (I don’t remember the exact name and I cannot access my cameras right now). It was fail-proof there to get the initial focus and it switched automatically to tracking. It did make my life so easy that way. No, not Eye-AF for bird but as far as I am concerned, I can live without .
Joshua
Edit: two superb images from the cemetery, Birdie!

Thanks Joshua. I hear you.
I also used tracking, but once these little birds started moving I could not keep them in the frame.
So I saw no need to use that.
To nail the initial focus made all the difference.
Tracking or not, the initial focus area has to be spot on.
K-H.
PS: All your pictures, of birds or otherwise, stand out and are enjoyable!
First snaps with a new to me Voigtlander Nokton 35/1.2 vII. Nora is my faithful model. These are both wide open at f/1.2. Last time I used a copy of this lens was on my NEX-6. Love it on the A7rIV with the Techart adapter!
