I also used tracking, but once these little birds started moving I could not keep them in the frame.
So I saw no need to use that.
To nail the initial focus made all the difference.
Tracking or not, the initial focus area has to be spot on.

Many thanks. That is actually taken on Kirtland AFB (in Albuquerque) in a section of base that was formerly housing -- now it's just empty except for the trees. We had a good snow on base that year so I nabbed some photos while driving around

When working at LANL I visited Sandia many times, but never made it to that part of the base.
