Wonderful set Douglas!

Thanks for the comments Chris, Seabassius and Peire! The weather was absolutely terrible. Occasionally the snow was mixed with sharp grains of ice and it really hurt, even through the hood of my rain coat, so when I took the last photo I preset focus and then shot blindly straight into the wind really quick. After a couple of hours of this I was soaked and felt completely "blown through" and freezing, but it's worth it.

I loved to visit Alhambra in 1993.This is one of the very, very few places in this part of the world (I mean the former "Al andalus" and the islamic North Africa from Marocco to Syria) ,where one can see such beautifull pieces of muslim architecture remained.IMO the comparable monuments of art can be found only in Constantinople/Istambul (The Blue Mosque),Isfahan (all four magnificent oldest mosques - my favourite was The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque) and Mumtaz-i Mahal (Taj Mahal) in India.

11 years years later things got much more complicated.I had to wait one day, before I could enter.Being there again in the 2013 I just gave up.Crowds and cues everywhere.I think,I will never visit Alhambra again.Time to forget it and gather in my mind what I saw.And be pleased with it.And gratefull for that miracle in the real life.

The same goes to many of my previously beloved places in the South-Western France (between The Rhone and Garonne Rivers),Southern Spain (including Madrid),Italy (Rome and southwards plus infamous Venice in the Nord :-( ),to point out the most molesting places for a little bit mentally old fashioned tourist, that remembers how it was a quarter of a century ago.

All younger fellows - do not feel discouraged by the moanings of some prick getting older - go on,see ,feel and photograph it for yourselves!

And now, coming back to our muttons - Alhambra.

Our most famous Romantic poet from the XIX century - Adam Mickiewicz, wrote an emotional and original poem about conquering Granada,by the otherwise brutal, Spanish reconquista.

I am not a very poetic person, and not a fun of the arabic medieval conquest of Europe either, but this piece of poetry is something really special.Besides,I can not,by my nature, disobey a fruitfull influence of the superior Arab culture, that has taken the Spain up to such a high level of development. The highest in medieval Europe. Both culturally and economically.

This poem moves the strings of the harp in my soul, provided I have one.The soul I mean, not the harp -))).

It pays a tribute to the Arab's military fortitude and ,reluctantly,a homage to the Spanish invadors for their bravery.Leans over the suffering common people, dying from plague.

Falls into a reverie about the change of the era.And mourns over it somehow.

All that in the the most beautiful literary Polish language from the nineteenth century.

It says, that freedom never dies.Even the brave defenders, defeated and moribund of pestis, tell the invadors, that they will not be able to tolerate the fate of being enslaved. Finally and symbolically infecting them with pestis.

No good translations to English is available online.Yet be not afraid - someone used to say that translation is lilke a women.Either unsightly and faithful, or beautiful and unfaithful.

That is why I put it in original. Those all 50 millions in the World speaking/understanding Polish, please,do enjoy! Others, please,do trust me.It is really unique piece of poetry.Worthwile to be read, mentally ingested. And hopefully onderstood.

Już w gruzach leżą Maurów posady
Naród ich dźwiga żelaza;
Bronią się jeszcze twierdze Grenady,
Ale w Grenadzie zaraza.

Broni się jeszcze z wież Alpuhary
Almanzor z garstką rycerzy,
Hiszpan pod miastem zatknął sztandary,
Jutro do szturmu uderzy.
O wschodzie słońca ryknęły spiże,
Rwią się okopy, mur wali;
Już z minaretów błysnęły krzyże:
Hiszpanie zamku dostali.
Jeden Almanzor, widząc swe roty,
Zbite w opornej obronie,
Przerznął się między szable i groty,
Uciekł i zmylił pogonie.
Hiszpan na świeżej zamku ruinie,
Pomiędzy gruzy i trupy,
Zastawia ucztę, kąpie się w winie,
Rozdziela brańce i łupy.
Wtem straż odźwierna wodzom donosi,
Że rycerz z obcej krainy
O posłuchanie co rychlej prosi,
Ważne przywożąc nowiny.
Był to Almanzor, król muzułmanów,
Rzucił bezpieczne ukrycie,
Sam się oddaje w ręce Hiszpanów,
I tylko błaga o życie.
„Hiszpanie, woła na waszym progu
Przychodzę czołem uderzyć,
Przychodzę służyć waszemu Bogu,
Waszym prorokom uwierzyć.“
„Niechaj rozgłosi sława przed światem,
Że Arab, że król zwalczony,
Swoich zwycięzców chce zostać bratem,
Wasalem obcej korony.“

Hiszpanie męstwo cenić umieją:
Gdy Almanzora poznali,
Wódz go uścisnął, inni koleją
Jak towarzysza witali.
Almanzor wszystkich wzajemnie witał,
Wodza najczulej uścisnął,
Objął za szyję, za ręce chwytał,
Na ustach jego zawisnął.
A wtem osłabnął... padł na kolana...
Ale rękami drżącemi,
Wiążąc swój zawój u nóg Hiszpana,
Ciągnął się za nim po ziemi.
Spojrzał dokoła — wszystkich zadziwił:
Zbladłe, zsiniałe miał lice,
Śmiechem okropnym usta wykrzywił,
Krwią mu nabiegły źrenice.
„Patrzcie o giaury! jam siny, blady...
Zgadnijcie czyim ja posłem?...
Jam was oszukał: wracam z Grenady,
Ja wam zarazę przyniosłem!...
„Pocałowaniem wszczepiłem w duszę
Jad, co was będzie pożerać...
Pójdźcie i patrzcie na me katusze,
Wy tak musicie umierać.“
Rzuca się, krzyczy, ściąga ramiona:
Chciałby uściśnieniem wiecznem
Wszystkich Hiszpanów przykuć do łona;
Śmieje się — śmiechem serdecznym.
Śmiał się — już skonał — jeszcze powieki,
Jeszcze się usta nie zwarły,
I śmiech piekielny został na wieki
Do zimnych liców przymarły.

Hiszpanie trwożni z miasta uciekli;
Dżuma za nimi w ślad biegła,
Z gór Alpuhary nim się wywlekli,
Reszta ich wojska poległa.

 A. Mickiewicz.

I wish I could translate this poem truly in any of the few languages that I know. But I'm afraid,it is too difficult a task.Anyways - just see and admire!

Went down to the beach a couple weeks ago and took these. Best time is low tide AND later afternoon.

All taken with A9 with 100-400GM and 1.4TC

The last shot, of the Snowy Egret was SOOC except for some sharpening. The colors, clarity, etc. are untouched.

Snowy Egrets are one of my favorite subjects. They all have their crazy personalities. This guy roughed up when he finally noticed me and then settled back down looking for food.
