Thanks! it was AF-C. I use AEL as AF hold and remove AF function from shutter. It has been very useful for me this way. I miss this function (AFC) badly with RX1.
But this is not challenge focus as I can follow my son with same speed. Means it will help AF as well if your subject distance didn't change much.

So, you can hold the AEL button down, and then MF the lens? Or, how do you focus after removing it(focus) from the shutter?

this is totally case by case, I believe this one I just hold the AEL(reprogram as AF hold)and click the shutter. So it is AF, but many case, as you described,you do AF once and recompose or just follow, I use this way quite often as well so that I can do recompose focus compensation based on experience at close distance, quick get the shot without focus delay once the subject still in the zone.

edit: I think I might confuse you read back your question and my answer: I hold the AE button as AF and isolation focus from shutter. This is the same setup with Nikon AF-on button, I believe canon has one as well.
Hello! I'm Gasper from Slovenia and I have been checking that thread since A7 came out. Your oustanding shots made me buy it so here is my test shot with home made telescope - F5 2000mm.
I seem to be having a terrible time framing shots with my a7r. I keep cutting off the heads of my subjects. a7r with FE 35/2.8. Hand held, existing light. Capture 1.
