I shot 8o portraits yesterday with the A7rII and the Batis 85. Now I shot these at 7.1 but I also was in crop mode so effective 127mm I believe . Now when I say I backed off a ton of sharping , clarity is negative 12 and structure minus 6. Im knocking this down a lot. Still a laser. Her lips look the sharpest. I was using Eye AF http://www.getdpi.com/gallery/files/1/1/_dsc0675_1.jpg
Looking through more files from the Tamron 150-600, I'm starting to regret having returned it. But I'd really like to see a comparison at 400 with the Sony 70-400 G2. The BIF Heron shot is not tack sharp but it happened so fast, shot at 600mm and was handheld. I think with some practice, BIF is a reality.
I must say thank Joshua for his help regarding 85mm portrait lenses. With the scarce supply of the Batis 85, I would say a lot of portrait photographers are looking for other options.
The ZA 85/1.4 is really nice, but IMO still lacking at f/1.4. At f/1.8 to 2.5 the lens is superb.
With the recent FW upgrade to vs.44 with the Metabones IV adapter, one of my favourite lenses the 85L II works amazingly well with the A7rII. In fact I find the AF is more accurate that when I had the 5DII.
I was fortunate to pick this afternoon a really good deal on a almost brand new 85L II with the Metabones IV. I quickly updated the Metabones IV and the 85L II works brilliantly.
Anyway the very first shot with the A7rII 85L II and Metabones IV v44 from the person I bought the lens.
Congrats, Charles! I bet he would offer you more money to buy the lens back now . He may not know that it would work on the Sony A7r II that well. Taken at wide open?

Thanks Joshua Yes he had the 5DII and really not the ideal combo for AF accuracy.
Yes the lens was wide open at f/1.2 and AF was fast and accurate on the eye.

ZA lacking at 1.4 in what sense? On a 24 mp ff sensor it's quite good WO, but not so much on 42 maybe?
It is a great lens, but having the glow at f/1.2/1.4 for portraits is what I mean. With the ZA 85/1.4 at f/1.4 there is not quite the same rendering wide open. In truth it is a personal choice The other big plus is the fast and accurate AF for capturing the eye even with close head shots.
I will keep both lenses for now, as I suspect the ZA 85/1.4 is better stopped down for landscape work.

The Batis 85 is expected now in November!
I see. In my experience the ZA is technically better, but yes, I don't think the rendering is as becoming as the 85L often at times. I have the Contax N 85 now, and it's a pinch softer WO but with very good contest and color and a smoother feel. It's like a za but better, more becoming, more personality. I owned the ZA and FD 85 L and I found the ZA better for landscapes both technically and in rendering, specially with highlights. Life is good that we have to make such "tough" choices
Edit: I should also mention the ZA is better across the frame WO and close to it.
A7RII with Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM This is an interesting lens and very sharp. For these informal portraits I backed off the clarity into minus double digits to soften the images as Guy also suggested for the Batis. These are all wide open.
