Shoot raw! Don't worry about anything else. When everyone tells you this, it's for good reason. It's not as difficult as you think. Use Lightroom. It's so easy.... a cave man could do it.
Thank you for calling. Elijah isn't here. He's only using his 105 1.4e. If you wish to leave a message, wait for the beep beeeeppp beeeppppppppppp.

Elijah, Jason and Hardcore, I'm considering adding a D3s to my kit. Currently shooting D750 (with grip) and 35/58/85 1.4G.
Would love to have a back up camera combined with trying a pro Nikon body. At the same time, I'm unsure if it would be a step "back" compared to D750?
How is SOOC JPEGs from D3s, as I don't shoot RAW but only tweak in camera through NikonPC? Dont shoot me ;-)
Would love to hear your thoughts. Looking at a 20.000 click body around $1,500.

No, just no! Shoot RAW. If you absolutely must shoot JPEG, shoot both JPEG and RAW (It's in the camera settings) for those shots that you'll inevitably want to correct.
Many very good photographers shoot JPEG and do not post-process, some of whom post regularly on FM. The one who obviously comes to mind is the Trench Monkey, who does everything in camera based upon his own "special sauce" for in-camera settings. It depends on the individual as to his particular needs and wants.
I shoot raw only with my Nikon gear but, recently, when I use my Fuji system, it's JPEG, due to its very unique in camera settings/options.
Hardcore, your work with both this lens and the new 105 is excellent, and as good as any, if not better than, those I have seen.
I’m thinking the top veterans from this thread are (or will soon be) out shooting with their new 105mm f/1.4Es and won’t be hanging around here for a while. I’d like to get the new 105, but I’ll probably wait until my birthday next year. I can justify a costly lens just once a year, and this year was the 58, which I’m still trying to figure out. I don’t get out much, it seems.
And when I do get out – this being Oregon – I’m getting darkness and gray skies… or maybe both. It was gray and rainy for my trip into Portland for First Thursday.

Thanks for the encouragement regarding JPEG. Completely agree and for me JPEG is the way to go. :-)
What still amazes me is how I still trust myself with the moving subjects, shot wide open.
I bought the 24-70mm specifically for it's fast focus, yet I still end up using the 58G for these situations...
A few from my son, daughter in law and granddaughter.
They expecting a second and wanted some pictures (more in the 105/1.4 thread ).
Sorry for the safe shots at 2.0

Shooting your son and his fam bam? I wouldn't hesitate with f/1.0, there is no such thing as "safe" with family

broke out the 58 today
she was getting lonely. zomg, don't kill me - I wasn't using 1.4!!!
My wife hanging out with Desmo, our LabraDoodle. Desmo turns 1 year old tomorrow!
This picture was also a processing first for me -- I imported the RAW file from my DF into my iPad Pro using SnapSeed. After making a few adjustments, took it over to VSCO for a quick filter. I'm happy with the results.
From a testshoot with Samayra, a singer/dancer who asked for if possible a picture for her upcoming EP
Obviously I'm the wrong choice as I prefer my models/subject to run/move around a lot, and admittedly am not exactly an expert, nor very careful, with post processing (my only processing programs are Nikon Capture NX2 and Seashore, too old, dumb and rigid to learn Photoshop, Lightroom etc. )
So we ended up on the beach, around 7.00 pm with the sun setting at around 8.00 pm
Beautiful light, although by the end of the shoot quite dim
But with my D800 and 1.4/58mm I was able to continue even when the sun was 'sinking' into the sea,
something I wouldn't have dreamt (dreamed? Sorry, not a native English speaker ) of doing back in the film shooting days
Anyway, amid all the madness and jumping around I also got these two
(yes, her hair was dyed red at the ends )
if interested, the rest (also shot with a 135mm DC) can be found here
