AF multi mode
When this thread began, did someone mention a preference for using one particular focus mode or do you change depending on your scene ? I am having some problems getting focus where I want it to be ?? thanks

I think the large single center square AF point mode workks best and I focus recompose if I have to.
In rare cases when that is not working then I switch to MF.

Same - center point and recompose, used to that from 5D2. I'm about to turn off face recognition as well. I find I disagree with multi-point AF too often. Unfortunately the AF is a far cry from the OM-D, which seems to read my mind in AF, and whose touch screen is very handy for quick focus point selection.

Tom, excellent portrait, like the B&W tones.
Ron, nice DV landscape shot of ZP!
Joan, like the colors!
Nobody got my homage to Garry shot in my last post.
Hope to see that exhibit soon!
Here are three more from SF.

Wayne: Not at all! I immediatelly checked their website and found out that they will offer free entrance for the last four days (also the last four days of the Winogrand exhibition) before they close for almost three years. Since I'll visit California (and the western US) beginning with May, 24th, I now have a fixed appointment at SFMOMA .
So I really have to say thank you very much for that hint and for the nice picture as well!

Thank you Carsten, Wayne and Philip!
dovey, what a nice set! I can't believe how close you got to those animals. Very cute! I also really like #2564. Ken, great composition and mood! Jochen, really nice mood (and light) in yours too. Wayne, I always admire your B&W processing. A great look, but I like the color ones too, especially #2.
Argh, I have tons of photos but very little time to process them, so they just keep piling up. Anyway, here are two deserted houses from Lofoten:

I finally got around to using my RX1. I was immediately impressed with the sharpness wide open. I'll need a ND filter for day time shooting, but indoors I really liked shooting at f/2. As for AF, I use the bottom one where I can move the little square around and shoot that way. Colors are so nice. I'm a 35 FOV shooter and I shoot alot with my iPhone so I'm right at ease with this camera. So far I'm shooting jpgs and I'm perfectly happy with them. I'll post some shots from my trip to Cannon Beach this past week. Definitely a keeper. Oh, another thing. I bought a nice Luigi strap and the camera feels great to wear all day. One thing I want to change is the LCD protector. The Sony one touches the screen and one day it fogged up under the screen. I'm wondering if the Giotto's Schott glass protector flex like the Sony one does.

Teseg, nice b&w conversion.
ronjames, that's a nice looking landscape.
Wayne, I like the tones of that B&W one.
Helena, great work again. The yellow house looks so interesting!

Great images everyone!
While I only had an RX1 on loan for a little over a week, I still haven't posted everything I shot with it. So in the spirit of this thread, here are some from a visit to a friend's family.
Regarding the question of AF mode, I primarily used the moveable AF spot. I found it worked really well when centrally located (though had trouble keeping up with an active 2.5-year-old boy). But if moved quite far off-center, there were a number of times it just wouldn't lock on anything, particularly in lower light conditions. I also briefly tried the multi-point mode (first image below), but found that unlike what I'm used to with similar AF modes on my Canon DSLRs, it didn't necessarily focus on the closest subject area. Most of the images from that mode were back focused, to my disappointment. Once I realized this, I switched back to the moveable spot mode and stayed with it. Perhaps I didn't give it enough time to determine where it works best.
William: I agree, having a ND filter is a necessity, however, the recovery range of the RX1 is very impressive. I was able to shoot wide open at 1/2000 and base ISO in winter sunlight and fully recover the images that appeared well overexposed in the camera, using Lightroom 4. The images didn't have obvious signs of poor highlight recovery (such as density but incomplete or strange colors) that I've experienced with other files, such as those from my M9. That said, I'm not sure the files would be able to tolerate correct recovery of scenes shot wide open without a ND in more intense summer sunlight. Bottom line: I think you'll find the files have a lot of pliability.

Ron, very impressive processed images. I like those family pictures very much, full of life. Good clarity at the same time not too contrasty. well done. The RX1 did beautifully here as well.

What a wonderful set Ron! Great atmosphere in all of them and so clear and sharp. Whenever I see your photos I'm reminded that I have a lot to learn about post processing. It's good to see what can be done in the right hands.

Thanks Michael and Helena! Very kind of you both. Recently I've found my taste in PP has changed a bit and I'm actually degreasing contrast sometimes. This seemed to work quite well with the RX1 because of the very wide tonal range in many files.
Here's a selection in which the tonal range would have given my M9 fits:
A consequence of reducing contrast is images can lose color vibrancy, so I found I was pushing the saturation and vibrancy sliders much more than I normally would, particularly for these RX1 images. The last one above was quite heavily manipulated to bring out foreground detail, and was shot at ISO 1600 as well. It tolerated it quite well, and I've since reprocessed it for even more tonality on his face, just don't have it online. In hindsight, I should have shot this at ISO 400 instead and still had a good shutter speed. It might be my mindset with this camera though, but I found I was often less conscious/careful about such settings compared to how I work with the M9.
