Thank you again Wayne! I checked out the one Phillip linked to, but it is a UV filter. Anyway, now I know what to look for, so I'll do a more thorough search soon.

However, I think you are onto something when you bring up the hood. With my normal UV filter + hood I get very little vignetting (and even less with just the hood). The polarizer is thicker though, so perhaps that's where the limit is. Before I buy another filter I'll do some testing with my Sigma without the hood and see how that goes. If it's fine without the hood I can always take it off when I'm going to shoot a scene where I know that vignetting will cause problems. Also, I'll take Jochen's advice and only use the polarizer when the effect is needed (I'm often lazy and keep it on all day).

Very nice photo above! I really like the composition and B&W processing.

Hi all - wow, what a fortnight! I went to Sweden for work last week and then added a long weekend in Lapland and a then a weeks holiday in Russia too. I'm currently sitting in the lounge at London Heathrow and have been madly editing photo's for the last few hours.

I took my RX1 with me, but I also took my Canon 5D Mark III as I wasn't prepared to 'risk' not getting THE shot as I feel restricted with the Sony's fixed 35mm lens.

Before I went, I wasn't sure if I would keep the RX1 and was going to use the trip to try and decide. The result? An outstanding YES.

First, the downsides - The battery life sucks in the cold. Big time. I bought a spare battery before I left, but it surprised me how quickly it gave up the ghost when exposed to around -5C. I guess I've been spoilt with my DSLR, which I have a grip on and lasts for weeks on a dual battery. Yes, maybe having it on a BlackRapid RS strap (which worked brilliantly BTW), dangling in the cold wasn't the best idea, but it is what it is :-)

Secondly, occasionally, the camera 'back focused' and totally missed the massive person standing in the frame and focused on the background. This was very frustrating and I couldn't find a way to eliminate this problem.

Thirdly, it is WAY TO EASY to accidentally change settings with gloves on, especially the exposure compensation dial. The controls need a software lock! I was always changing things accidentally...

Anyway, on to the good, but first, a story: We went Husky Dog sledding and Snowmobiling in Lapland and due to weight and handling restrictions, I took the RX1 on both events. During the sled ride, I fell off 3 times and the RX1 got dragged through the snow and ice, so badly that I thought it was history. Honestly, I should have taken a pic of it, but the lens was caked in ice, the controls were caked in ice and the leather half case was solid ice. I made sure to get as much ice and moisture off it in the hut afterwards and it emerged unscathed. During the snowmobiling, it bashed against the machine a few times as well as my leg many times and again, was exposed to raw air temp of around -10C, at night. Couldn't get much harsher, to be honest!

Some pics:

First, from Sweden

2 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/8 @ 35 mm, 1/250, ISO 100

Now Lapland, Husky Dogs:

4 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/4 @ 35 mm, 1/80, ISO 400

5 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 1/80, ISO 2500

Now to Snowmobiling:

6 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/4 @ 35 mm, 1/80, ISO 50

7 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2.5 @ 35 mm, 1/80, ISO 50 (it looks like I turned auto-ISO off, by accident)

8 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2.5 @ 35 mm, 1/80, ISO 50

Now, on to the pearler - The Northern Lights. The place we had dinner at was out in the sticks and was designed to be the best location for the Northern Lights if they appeared. And, they did. But, I'd made a fundamental mistake and didn't think it through. No tripod. Nada. Left my CF Gitzo back at hotel, as I was told it wouldn't be able to be carried. I should have insisted though, as the company with the snowmobiles came to collect them later and could have brought the tripod then, I am sure (if it couldn't go under the skidoo seat). Anyway. Here is my attempt at handheld:

Small, because it's embarrassing. That said, I reckon I did pretty well holding that kind of still for 0.6s! So, I was pretty depressed that I'd missed capturing it. Saw it with my own eyes for the first time ever though!

Anyway (and I'm sorry this is so long, I hope it interests someone), when we got back to the cottage at the ski resort some hour plus later, we decided to have another go. The smoker was sent outside onto the balcony, rugged up, on aurora watch. And... It happened.

9 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 6s, ISO 800 (This is the FIRST shot)

10 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 6s, ISO 800

11 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2.5 @ 35 mm, 4s, ISO 800

12 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 4s, ISO 800 (I'd gone inside to copy onto the computer and then took the camera back outside, put it on the trips and gave instructions to the smoker. Some minutes later, there were excited cries of "Simon, Simon - get your arse out here)

13 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 6s, ISO 800

14 - Photo taken with SONY DSC-RX1, f/2 @ 35 mm, 4s, ISO 800

Then, it stopped and was covered by cloud. The slightly embarrassing admission for the Aurora shots? I had set the camera to Scene Mode, night shots with tripod. I pointed the camera, pressed the shutter and let the camera do its thing. After I saw the first few, I wasn't game to change anything!

So, my RX1 is a keeper.

sebboh and Jim, thank you very much! I can't get over how beautiful it is up there and wish we could go there again next week...

Simon, looks like you had a great trip! Sorry to hear about the problems! As you can see from my photos I too have been shooting in cold weather with the RX1 a lot and can honestly say that I have none of the issues you list. One battery generally lasts a full day in around -8C (assuming I put the camera back in the shoulder bag between shots) and it has not even once focused behind my intended subject since I got it in December. It hunts occasionally, but never misses. If you can, maybe you should return it and try another one?

Helena, maybe I need to start carrying a shoulder bag :-) Re the focusing, perhaps it's my methodology, I will have to do some testing.

Thanks so much Helena and Joan!
Helena, I really like all 3!
1st one with the tropical looking greens amongst the snow and ice is cool
2nd colorful houses against the backdrop of the mtns
3rd beautiful reflection, like the comp with row boat amongst the reflection. Thanks for info on filters and I just usually keep taking on and off the polarizer unless I know I will need it again shortly. You definitely needed one there to cut down all the reflections off the snow and water. Sometimes if I need a hood while polarizer is on I will use my hand to block the sunlight.
Simon, sounds like a very fun trip and glad your RX1 survived. Good to know it can handle the elements and some rough treatment even though I baby mine.
Cool aurora shots and shots of the dog sled team!
PDAF focusing can have very hard time focusing on all black objects and is why it may have backfocused on the background which it could detect contrast changes.
Need to put focus square on edge of person or on face and then focus recompose. I think a lot of people who are used to their PDAF dslrs do not take into consideration how CDAF works and conditions why it may have trouble focusing.

Such excellence in all hands, and high presence in all light conditions...Helena's #2 for me, the snow tones and shadow detail on the mntns are just right, the composition includes the human and natural environment, great light..but it's the puffy wisps of cloud rising off the peaks that caps it off. The variations in sky tones helps rather than hinders.

Here is a slim front threaded high end pola :

Not cheap even in 49mm but the best seldom is.

Simon, #2 of yours is very impressive.

I took this lovely camera to the bush over Easter. My mother's 70th birthday and her choice was to go the Lighthouse at Wilson's Prom. 21km one way and 25km return. Backpacks did get a little heavy, which is why this camera was perfect. I took along a new Sigma DP2M, good camera but the inability to deal with brown colours meant that it cannot take photos of Indians without making them look hideous (purple blotches)
Could not have asked for better conditions and and excellent party at the lighthouse.
I will be printing and framing some shots from this wonderful camera to give to her as her birthday present.
Great animal life and vegetation here, met up with wallabies and wombats, fairly tame, even though they are in the wild.

Philip

Are you suggesting that Zeiss are making the forthcoming E mount lenses to cover full frame as well as APS-C?

I hope that's wahat you means!

I cannot imagine why they would do that. It would negate all size advantages. I imagine they will make the lenses to fit APS-C and MFT.

Mark, two different lines, sadly.

They have committed to two different sets of three CZ lenses, none will be cheap - the first for the E mount and Fuji from memory (APS-C coverage), these are to go with the well-received 24/1.8 Sonnar for the current NEX series...Sony belatedly realised there was a higher end market for NEX camera lenses and are now 'backfilling'...these are the very attractive 'new look design' lenses, 12-32-50 from memory. So that gives 12-24-32-50 in CZ, or in 35m equivalents: 18mm-35mm-50mm-75mm. Not everything but not bad.

For the second set they will likely work with prototypes of the 'FF NEX' provided them during development by Sony - these are full-frame lenses, due June 2014.

Zeiss are thus well-positioned at each level of this still fast developing market as well as the mainstream DSLR (ZE/F) and the new higher end cine style lenses also.

Yes, the IQ is great and the rendering very pleasing. I'm not really into a very expensive camera with no viewfinder but it's still hard not to think about the RX1 as a possible camera.

I played around with one at the Sony store last week (not seriously, just killing time). I have to agree with Jonas' sentiments. I actually looked at Lensrentals to see how much it would cost to rent one for an upcoming trip. The rental cost kind of reinforces how expensive the camera really is.

Despite all that, there have been a few great images posted here!
