I'm thinking of downgrading my rx1rII to fund an rx1...mostly because I want to fund an a9. Thoughts?
I've actually been crazy enough to use the rx1rii as a second body for paid portrait sessions, events, and even weddings. It gotten the job done, but I think the rx1rII is kind of excessive as an out with the family cam.

I can't comment upon either buying an A9 or downgrading from an RX1RII to an RX1, but I can say that I have chosen not to upgrade my RX1 to an RX1RII -- unfortunately, the loss of the RX1's pop-up flash is a deal-killer for me -- and even though I'm usually quite picky in these matters, I'm still over-the-moon happy with the results I'm achieving with my RX1.
For my everyday and handheld photography needs, I can confidently state that even after all these years -- remember, the RX1 will be five years old this December! -- there is still no better camera.

First day using my new (to me) RX1. After a short afternoon outing, I am in love with this camera. My expectations were low for the autofocus, but I have been pleasantly surprised. Although, I do find manual focus to be a joy to use on the RX1.

Does sony not issue firmware updates for the rx1 cameras? I'd really like the af point selection features they added in the new firmware to the a7 bodies.

Sebboh, what are those specks on the white plastic "casing" just above the sensor in the first picture? Is that dust?
Also interesting to note the lining around the lens mount. Unless that isn't lining.

not sure what specks your talking about (since it's exposed there could certainly be dust), but there appears to be grey foam lining around the lens mount.
the primary purpose of the tear down was to determine how easy it would be to convert to manual focus. it looks like there are probably two different moving groups within the lens that probably move different amounts during focusing (i need to power up the lens and watch it move to verify that). if this is true it means the RX1 lens will be nearly impossible to convert to real manual focus. it should be possible though to replace the exterior of the lens and make a longer throw version of the macro extension ring that would allow more usable manual focus. this would also allow the lens to retain AF.
The way the lens is designed the rear group is fixed pretty much on top of the sensor cover glass and the front element is also fixed in it's distance from the sensor (except when moved for macro mode). The internal groups on both sides of the aperture move during focus.
