For me, the biggest drawback to the original RX1 EVF is not that it is external, but that it has a very low dynamic range. Hence, lots of blown highlights and dark shadows turn out to be fine in the captured photo. I have never used the RX1II, but I suspect that it is improved, probably on the level of the A7II or possibly the A7RII

Question about Rx1... this one doesn't have a viewfinder built-in.
How good is this finder compared to Rx1R2? FDA-EVM1K Electronic Viewfinder

I think they have their pros and cons. I am still using the RX1 original. With an extra L-grip and the external viewfinder it has served me well for years now.
The viewfinder has yet to fall off. It is "secured" to the hot shoe by a rubber band. During these 3 and soon a half year I have replaced the rubber band once.
The external viewfinder works OK and you can tilt it! Good. It is bulky. Pity.
The RX1Rii viewfinder doesn't tilt and if you like to use a rubber eye cap the viewfinder can't get retracted again unless you un-mount the cap. Bulky. Pity. No flash. Pity again.
If I had been more wealthy I would have bought the RX1Rii. In reality the RX1 works good enough. But heck, maybe I could get used to a viewfinder without a cap. I know I could get used to faster AF and slightly more mallable files.
As usual, anyone has to decide if it is worth the money. For most photographers it isn't about what we "need" these days.
EDIT: Question to you RX1Rii-users using the EVF. How is the EVF without the rubber cap mounted. I have used viewfinders with caps on them for 40+ years. Is it possible to get used to a finder without a cap? If I win the lottery and find that I really need the upgrade...

But hey, this is the image thread... Here is another take on the view from the top of the top of the rock taken during a visit to New York, USA in May this year:
5 images stitched, handheld, not the same situation, nor the same idea, as Guy's image on the last page...
Stitched while in NYC using as laptop and Photoshop. When I got home I could easily see the ugliness and I think I'll run the images through PTGui.

For me it is. I avoided the RX1 for the lack of a tilt LCD and the built in EVF- both are present in the X II plus as an added bonus the AF is just superb. Most of all the X II lacks a pop up flash!
Using the EVF without the rubber cup, yes all the time. To much hustle to put it on and it might get lost easy.
With glasses it works very good without the cup.

Great NY shot, Jonas !!!
Hi Werner,
Top of the rock was a fun exercise. At work they liked the image (they got a slightly larger version) but I can't say they are a critical herd. I'll process it again and get rid of the exposure errors and so on in the stitch. Thank you.
It's good to read the EVF works for you without the eye cup. Yes, you can't put it on and off all the time so I figured the new EVF was as bulky as the old one in reality... OK, so it isn't but I guess most use it without the eye cup then. Oh well, my RX1 works fine but one day of these days I'll get lured to upgrade.

Hello all. I'm new to the thread as I just pickled up a mint RX1 with EVF for a decent price locally. I currently have an X100s as my carry anywhere that this will be replacing--the RX1 blows it out of the water! I really had no idea. Anyways here are a few family shots from the weekend in DC. There's a lot of great stuff in here so hopefully you guys don't mind. This camera is flat out amazing--compares favorably to my d750 and 28g combo that I love so much. I definitely see the 2nd version in my future once the used prices fall to within reach. Cheers

Hello newone,
Welcome!
The RX1 is great. I replaced my dSLR stuff with the RX1 in april 2013. I have brought it around the world, used it for family events and what not in between.
It can't be used for everything obviously but it works so well for such a big part of everything I want to do. Yes, lower the RX1Rii price and I guess I'll be there as well.
Yes, there are a lot of talented photographers showing great work here but there is no reason to back off. Images are images and I think everubody appreciate images showing what the RX1(x) can do.

Fantastic stuff being posted here, folks! I am awed. Welcome to the newbies - I'm pretty new as well.
A few recent shots. Been recovering from some surgery, so I haven't gotten to cover as much ground as usual, but am making an effort to get out and stay in shape while I am healing. Chase on one of the trails on my place:
Chase and Joy at the little nearby mountain lake - the normally crystal clear, ice cold spring water has turned a bilious green in the summer heat and rain. We go here often in the warm weather because the dogs can stay wet and run hard.
It's the heart of berry and mushroom gathering season here in the forest. I can almost see a leprechaun sitting under these:
A very early precursor of fall - a promise that this hot weather will soon end and the glorious, cool, crisp days and colors of fall will return Sometimes we even get cool weather in August. Only four more weeks until the first upland bird seasons opens here and life can begin again - hopefully I will be back in 100% condition by then.

Hi Vivek,
Good to see you here.
The AF is superb? Well, the RX1 original AF nails it but it surely takes some time for it...
You are often shooting in the streets; are you using AF for that or are you pre-focusing? Maybe if you can describe what "superb" is?
Hmm... checking this thread once again make me think about the RX1Rii and an upgrade. Darn! OK, is there any good grip and L-plate out there (except for the RRS one)?

I had not used my RX1 for quite some time until I took it along on a recent trip to southern Colorado. I'm glad that I did, because I was reminded of what great images this camera can make. All of the following are from Durango and the surrounding area.

Hi Jonas, Thanks! I am using the Metro grip which I think is just perfect (at least for me). AF (continuos mode) nails it faster than I can manually focus. This by all means is quite a high praise for Sony's current AF.
One of the last shots earlier today before submitting my cam for a FIX (image review button is unresponsive/dead).

Thank you Vivek,
The Metro grip seem not to be a grip with an L-plate. A grip with a bottom plate and the plate is A-S compatible, well, maybe that is enough. I like L-plates though.
I'm sorry to hear about your review button. It's not an important button but it should work. I hope the turn-around time is reasonable!

Hi zhangyue,
To my eyes that's an exotic landscape! Thank you.
Some days ago you posted a B&W stitched image of the same place. Landscapes are often better in colour but I like the composition in the last image more.
I have to ask; What is the building to the right? A very long something? /Jonas
