p.167 #14 · Sony RX1, RX1R, RX1R II and RX1R III Image Thread | |
My A7s with 35/2.8 FE certainly focuses faster, especially in lower light, but the images just don't compare to the Rx1. The RX1 Sonnar just renders everything in this really smooth way, its still very sharp don't get me wrong, but its not at all clinical, if that makes any sense. I think the 35 FE is a fine lens for the money, but it just doesn't have that cool creamy way of drawing and leaves me feeling a bit flat.
Likewise with the, the EM1 I picked up, blazing fast AF, and darn if I don't love the touch screen for moving the AF point exactly where I want it, but the files just are so disappointing in comparison. There is that graininess to them, noise I suppose, even at lower ISO, and while still very good overall, they just look, for lack of a better word, digital.
Same thing with the X100t too. Fun camera to shoot, and a real joy to walk around with, but its little 23/2 just isn't in the same class as the 35/2 Sonnar. Hamburger vs a filtet. I do enjoy a tasty burger though, so don't get me wrong, but shoot them side by side and without even pixel peeping the difference is pretty apparent.
I really do think the 35/2 is the best overall lens I've owned, and I've owned a ton of glass. Its sharp across the frame without being clinical, its got nice micro-contrast and "pop", and its focus transition and overall way of rendering is just so darn smooth.
Bit subjective of course, but there just isn't another camera/lens combo that gives me files that look as pleasing to my eye as the RX1.
There certainly are other aspects of the camera that could be improved, that is for sure, but whenever I take it out with another camera, I come back with fewer shots from the RX1, but more overall keepers.
The slightly wider than 35mm focal length actually I've really come to enjoy as well. On my X100 its true 35mm (eqiv.), and A7s with 35/2.8 both feel noticeably tighter. The RX1 is really kind of a cross between a 28 and a 35 almost, which is also kind of perfect for me because I really like those two focal lengths.
Sony produced a darn near "perfect" camera somehow, even though on paper there is plenty of imperfect things about it
