Thanks for the additional details. I know what you mean about the 200 f/2.8, as I had version 1 (built-in hood) and used it all the time. Then I traded it for a 70-200 f/4, which I haven't really bonded with despite it's high quality. Perhaps a switch to 180L will fill a couple of gaps for me.
Jerry, I think that is a very tastefully done shot, with a super eye for composition and detail. Let us see some more.
Here is a shot with handheld 1DMkIIN + 800L.
For this type of shooting where a distant animal needs to be brought in, I believe 800L is the best.
However, for faster action photography, with major changes in focusing distance, 800L doesn't do very well for me.
Hi all, i see i am a bit late to this party. I detect the bias towards birds is a little weaker than i expected, due no doubt to Canada Day (Happy Canada day guys) and the influx of new faces. I will join StillFingerz in the florals section - a short study of a little yellow thing we get round here. These are from last year, as most of this summer's shooting has been with a Fuji X10, which doesn't really qualify for this forum.
I promise i'll get some shots of my usual "model" as soon as i can
Technical details: 1DIV with 16-35, mostly at 35mm, for a relatively loose composition, which was then later cropped accordingly to taste based on each burst. 1DIII with 70-200, at 70mm for a tighter composition option.
Most exposures were ISO 100, 30 seconds, f/14 or 16, though some of the earlier wide shots were 15 seconds. Because it's not a super high-end fireworks display, I've found in past years if I use shorter than 15 seconds the bursts tend to be quite boring. 30 seconds seems to be pretty reasonable, though for the finalé some bursts were a bit blown out
There was a nearly full moon directly above the bursts (starburst visible in last image), which kept some light in the sky.
Summer is time for airshows, but this year in Switzerland there is no big air event planned. Still, we have some military vehicle events. I tried my brand new 5DIII here, with 24-105. First vehicle is an english veteran from first Gulf War, second one is an American half-track from WW II. Both owned by private collectors
Just back from Japan and limited myself to only three lenses. But really wanted to see what the 5DMk3 could do with the 50/1.2 at 1.2.
Here is a few from the land of the rising sun. All 5Dmk3 handheld and 1.2 in almost all..
Great images above!!!!
I did a bit of handheld shooting with 7D +800L this morning.
For this kinda target 800L is superb. However, I have never warmed up to 7D. Even at ISO 400 lottsa noise visible even with minor cropping. In effect, despite prodigeous sensor pixel density of 7D, my 1DsMkII has better "reach" because it allows cropping without much detail deterioration.
1DMkIIN files are better quality too IMO although they can not be crop enlarged much.

I had a chance to test drive the Sony A77 24MP camera at a recent Sony event (Toronto FC game) and I came to the same conclusion about noise. At 200 there was already some. At 800 it's quite evident in my LR RAW conversions (without luminance NR). Of course, I could add NR, but detail loss was evident. I normally don't care much about luminance noise, but my impression is that the higher the MP gets with smaller sensors, the more and more NR plays a significant factor in final image presentation.
