I know this is not a serious work and I should use a tripod. There is actually some blur on rocks in 100% view. So, you don't have to comment negatively

That's actually pretty impressive though. In my non-IS lenses, trying to get any quality water blur requires a tripod. Here, you could easily have shot that at 1/4 second and probably gotten it crisp. Speaks well of the VC,

p.5 #2 · First Impressions: TAMRON 24-70 VC (A007E) on 3rd Party Body

After some more extensive testing, I am unfortunately returning my copy of the lens.

I found it impressively sharp at 2.8, it really delivers the goods here (vignetting notwithstanding). I was comparing to my Sigma 24-70 HSM. Throughout the zoom range the Tamron was noticably sharper in the center to f/5.6. Things seemed to even out around f/8.

Unfortuntely, off center it is not so good. In fact I would call it terrible...it was really so bad compared to the Sigma that I am wondering if I got a defective copy. I'm not talking about the extreme edges, I'm talking just a little ways off center, the details would become smeared and it would not sharpen up regardless of the aperture. (At infinty focus, images with details in the foreground though remained sharper across the frame, but in the distance details off center were smeared.) I'll try to post some crops later tonight if anyone's interested.

I would be curious to try another copy of the lens. But I might have to put it off for another time in the future. I wouldn't likely be able to get a new copy anyways before an upcoming job up where I thought the VC might be useful....I'll just stick with the Sigma and bump up the ISO a bit.

But I would be very interested in hearing if anyone else gets better edge performance out of their copy.

I am very picky about the lenses that I buy. Most of the Canon L's I've bought have had to go to Canon after purchasing them to get calibrated. They've all come back working very well - except for my 24-70L. Could never get it working to my satisfaction.

I had the same issue with the Tamron 28-75. A little soft out of the box, then sent it in for calibration and it worked beautifully.

It's just a shame that Canon didn't get their 24-70L MkII out the door as soon as planned. I am in the situation of NEEDING a 24-70 lens by late June. I had always planned on the Tamron or the Canon II. But it looks like it will come down to availability.

Theres already a canon available.

Ouch. I hope it is a defective copy.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

it did well at the edges on that one test site so perhaps you did get a bad copy

I'm definitely interested in seeing how far away from the center performance starts degrading. Personally it won't be a deal breaker for my work though, even my 17-40L's mushy corners aren't bothersome to me.

Maybe because they always whine about "even to high"?

Should we (the rest of the world) start whining, too?

No. You should keep quiet and accept your place in the world

Why do you think you even exist?

Useful info. How long it took for Tamron to return your lens?

Lensrentals has a short article on Tamron and also about off-center sharpness. The new Tamron looks better than the Canon L.

A shot demonstrating barrel distortion would be appreciated as well as some more 100% crops.

A recent non-generic drug that I was prescribed costs 108% more in the USA than in Canada. Considering it was $785, the original prescription and a refill would cost more than a lot of cameras and lenses so I am no longer feeling guilty about the break we get on photo equipment.

BTW... I got a manufacturer's coupon which allowed up for up to 6 purchases at $10 ea. - provided I wasn't on Medicad or Medicare (not quite yet). There's something seriously wrong with a system that works this way but since I don't want Fred banning me I'll keep the fuming and ranting to myself.

It took about 10-12 days as I recall. A little longer than Canon, but I'm a member of Canon Pro Services, so I'm used to a priority service. Was worth the wait, IMO.

10-12 days is about right. I'd sent my 70-300 VC before and came back pretty quick.
