Peter: Thanks for the comments; I still have a place in my heart for the FD glass. The shot below is from the 400mm f2.8L, with the matched (2X-A) FD teleconverter attached, wide-open (the EXIF is only for the lens). It is a better combo than the 2X-B, with less veiling glare, and a bit more center resolution. I would only use it if truly F.L. limited; still nowhere near the resolution of the bare lens. At 800mm and f5.6, the focus point is a "witch" to nail down...
John_T, that's a great "dogfight" sequence; I see that interaction quite often, yet I've never managed to get decent shots of it...congratulations, there...

No doubt, John is getting into BIF big time.
I went after some Grackles today, but didn't do very well....one of those days.....
Misfocused all BIF shots against a pine tree background.
1DMkIIN was as OK as always, but 100-400 was not helping me .....an f/5.6 lens is not very good for shooting dark birds against a dark and busy background.

Indeed, it looks like Grackles are strictly a New World bird.
However, you have your crows, starlings and magpies.
There are no Magpies in Ontario, however, we have more than our share of Starlings, which is hardly a fair trade.
