Since the 5D3's AF is almost identical to the 1DX, if Canon screwed up this new 61pt system then Canon won't be around by next year. I never followed the 1D3 fiasco so not sure how big of a deal it really was but I'm sure Canon won't stick anything less than a steller AF in its two flagship cameras. Did you order a 5D3?
No, I haven't ordered the new camera, and I will not do that as long as its price + grip is > $2,500.
However, I think they've probably got their new AF system right.
Here is probably a Rough winged swallow, not really a shot for your typical birders because they couldn't count feathers on it, and the framing departs from the birding cliche.

Glad you enjoyed the ptarmigan images. I was a using one of my 7Ds with the 100-400 for those. Seems to be a good go-to setup for my daily needs, although, I usually have another 7D close by with the 70-200 f2.8 II on it. Waiting for a 5D MkIII to arrive. :-)
I like that tree very much, we have it as well.
It's good that you have found the new thread, Jefferson.
Now, there is no way in heck that one can have a spring in southern Ontario without Red winged blackbirds......they have just started showing up in "my" marsh.

Hi Dave, great pictures, loving the silky water effect. What type of filter did you use for these shots. I've just been getting into filters and have now built a fairly hardy kit of Lee Foundation Kit holder with 1-3stop GNDs in soft and hard, Singh-Ray Reverse 3stopGND and a Hitech 10-stopper. Also have the basic B+W CP. Unfortunately I haven't been able to put the filters to good use yet. Did you use just a CP or did you also use an ND filter?

Thanks! I just picked up everything you mention, but I also got the Singh-Ray Vari-ND whitch I used for these shots.
Edd, I am glad you could touch base ........I like the look of that International hotel.
Well, at least you seem to be riding in a capable motorcar. Also, what a mountain range that is.
Take care.

Thanks, Peter. Two more taken the same morning - looking out over Biscayne Bay from the Deering Estate. The disturbance in the water in the second photo was a manatee I wasn't quick enough to catch before it submerged. 5DII with 24-105.
That looks like a scene from Venice, Italy or some such. Very pretty.

Well, you got a Grackle in flight agains some busy background, so it must be working.
Also, the Mallard in landing is sharply done. It does look like 1DMkIV is a superior focusing camera to 1DMkIII.
How much is MkIV AF better than 1DMkIIN AF, that I do not really know.
Good shoooting, Jerry, as usual......the little denizens of the bush are obviously checking you out, and they must wonder about the big white tube you keep pointing at them.
Pijuns are also enjoying mild weather.
