The Vario Elmar 35-70/3.5 is a disappointment. It behaves exactly like the first MD Rokkor 35-70/3.5.Soft in the corners/sides at f3,5 and f5.6 at all settings, especially 35mm.My two copies of Minolta MD Macro 35-70/3.5 are much better.
Not a surprise, since it's the same optical design. I even sought out and overpaid for the E67 non-rotating front, but didn't see any performance improvements. The Kyocera-built 35-70's a huge overall improvement over its older sibling, but the MD Macro gives the best bang for the buck.

My Christmas project is building a 11x14 large format camera. Parts have been arriving at my house over the past month.
And I just received the lens: a Schneider Kreuznach 360mm f/5.6 made in 1970. The thing is absolutely huge--roughly equivalent to a 35mm f/0.54 on "full frame."

That's very cool. I hope to see shots of the rig once you're done. Shots from, as well, if you decide to scan. I've got some 4x5's and I'm on the fence about keeping them fully analog.

How's winter in Portland Vs. SF? Wishing you were still in SF?
nah, i missed seasons when i was in SF. summer is much nicer in portland than SF and autumn, winter, and spring actually exist here (well winter is questionable). i like the rain, i believe we've gotten more the last month than the entire 4 years i lived in SF. i do miss SF the city a bit though.

Haha. Portland is having a very wet winter so far. Last winter was much warmer and sunnier. A bit too much though. Some rain and snow make for a nice winter season.

Got a Contax Yashica Zeiss 85/2.8 MMJ from a Japanese seller on eBay, and just did the Leitax mount conversion to Nikon F-mount today. Looking forward to using it on the D810! Preliminary results via mount adapter on an old Sony NEX-5N are very promising.

i got a zf 35mm 1.4 inbound. i was very excited about this lens but got worried after reading the review linked below. apparently sharpness and bokeh are worse than samyang 35mm 1.4?! i'll have to play with it and see.
