"Evolved", "simplified", "rationalized", "streamlined", "unencumbered", even "improved" all might be better descriptors than "degenerated".

Just because the grammar has been simplified, it does not follow that the language has degenerated. (I am speaking of English, not American )

Definition of DEGENERATE
1a : having declined (as in nature, character, structure, or function) from an ancestral or former state; especially : having deteriorated progressively (as in the process of evolution) especially through loss of structure and function

even though the word is not PC it does fit .

this reminds of a history lecture i had long ago about how the roman empire didn't decline it just changed (who are we to say that losing flushing toilets is a decline). not a great analogy, it just brought back memories.

even though german is my first language it is easier to express thoughts in english.
I am no linguist but it has to do with the complex sentence construction in german which forces you to have to finish the sentence in your head before beginning to speak. Otherwise you might not be able to finish the sentence in proper german. Has to do with the verb often being at the end of the sentence. Thomas Mann had sentences that were an entire page + long. If you don't pay careful attention you won't be able to make sense of it at the end without re-reading it especially when the key verb shows up at the end of it.

english on the other hand allows you to speak as you think without the danger of boxing yourself into a corner
If you ever watch germans speak in public you will se how they carefully measure their words and speak slowly. They just want to make sure that they don't embarrass themselves

Not such a bad thing.

Many English speakers could use a very good dose of this, IMO.

You think "American" is bad, you should hear most Singaporean's speak English.
And again, I speak American, so I'm not really one to talk, but WOW Singlish is pretty bad! And I wouldn't make fun of another culture trying to pickup a foreign language, but English is the primary language here, it's used in schools. My fiance speaks proper English, she's very well spoken and multilingual as well.. How it's lost on some people I don't know?!

On another note, I wish I had a british accent, it really works a crowd of girls over here in SG.
Oh and while I was in Amsterdam I loved chatting up the locals for directions, the ones that spoke english (95% guessing the rest were tourists themselves) had an awesome accent!

Except that it had not "declined" and it had not "deteriorated"! It grew, expanded and improved. It became easier to use and express one's self -- quite the opposite of that definition. Anyone who thinks that modern English is less functional, less expressive, less able to convey one's thoughts and meaning than Old West Germanic Saxon is truly smoking something.

Exactly. except I would modify it this way "(I am speaking of English, not certain regional American sub-dialects)." ;-)

I would be interested to know how cellphones expose one to radiation. I was thinking these were microwave, which is a much longer and less powerful wavelength than gamma radiation.

Ever heard of a microwave oven?...There is a reason they use microwaves of a certain frequency because water absorbs the radiation and this heats it up.
The human body is mostly water but it also has DNA to worry about and one of the side effects of heating water in the human body is DNA damage...And that can lead to Cancer...This is why the extended use of mobile phones, which TX at microwave frequencies, is becoming a cause of concern to many. Ever wondered why your head feels warm when you have been talking on your mobile phone for a while...Well now you know!

My head doesn't feel warm, only my ear. And that's because of constantly holding a phone against it. My ear did also got warm in the 80's with a dial phone....

I think the danger is more of burns, not DNA damage.

I could rewrite your paragraph like so:

'Ever heard of a laser? Some power visible light lasers can really burn you! We should be wary of all sources of visible light due to possible burn/DNA damage. Only turn on the lights in your house in times of absolute need!'

Ionizing radiation is nasty because more or less EVERY collision can ionize the target. In the case of x-rays, gamma rays, etc., it is true that this is a photon/electromagnetic radiation just like visible light and RF. However, visible light and RF aren't ionizing. They can still be nasty because there is some absorption by soft tissues; if there weren't, your body would be transparent to visible light. It's clearly not. Crank up the power on that visible light source enough and it can be quite dangerous, basically through heating. I'm guessing the same could be true for RF sources - I don't have a specific example of that though. That doesn't mean lower power visible light sources or RF sources are dangerous.

Reasonably high power RF sources like a microwave have some pretty simple but very effective safety features that prevent us from harm. The screen in the window, the metal enclosure, and the auto-shutoff when the door is open. Those are all things which you can visible check on before using too, so there's no real worry of frying yourself with a microwave.

A cell phone is a not a high power RF source. ~1/2 watt? Your microwave oven is probably in the neighborhood of 1500 W. Just like a 1/2 watt electrical heater most likely isn't dangerous (if functioning properly), a high power heater in an electric stove could burn you pretty badly.

I did pick up a Swedish-English dictionary last time I was in Sweden (I couldn't find a Swedish-Danish dictionary, for some reason). I feel handicapped.

Strap a Super Tak 50/1.4 to your head, that should take the feeling away
