because unlike 80x60 print, those keys makes no sense, and are anyway made in china

Pro tools keyboard. This is no software, just the keycaps on an apple keyboard and it is 2x the price. These highly specialized tools are given a premium price.
Also look at the kubota actions. They are just ordering things you can do with the built in tools in photoshop. But the complete set is what, $1900 dollars? It's not the material you are paying for it is the time to develop this.
This group as photographers should be able to relate to that. Think of your albums, how would you like a bride saying, well that Album only costs you $300 dollars!? how can you be charging me $x. I only want to pay $350 or something. Well, it is the time you put into developing the spreads etc not the materials itself....Show more →
you know, one thing which you learn when you have your own family company is not wasting moneys on things which makes no sense.
if you can materialize that offer to fun or productivity (which i doubt) then it is good for you.
those of us who are not gadget collectors can spend their moneys on lenses they think they will need

Most of the smartest things I've ever done in business have been investing money (that some would say was too much) in things that save me time. If I wasn't already editing weddings really quickly, this would be a no-brainer for me.
I agree ^----^ my time is worth at a certain amount to me and if this thing can save me say 6 hours per year, it will basically pay for itself because that time is time I can spend with the family, marketing, blogging, shooting, etc.
Time in front of the computer does not make me money. It just reduces my hourly rate to myself...
For those interested, after reading this post over the last two days i desided to stop waiting on someone to see if any of the alternatives to the RPG keys really work...
well here it is.. I downloaded Paddy and used it to remap my standard keyboard. Paddy gives you the ability to asign slider functions to any key with the ability to adjust the amount of each click..
Example: i assigned the exposure increase to the #1 key and set it to increase in increments of 15. minus exposure is set to #2 same increments.. picked up a logitech G13 for $81.00 tax included from best buy and assigned the keystrokes to the G13.. now all of my slider increase buttons are assigned to the top row of buttons on the G13 and the 2nd row has all the minus adjustments so now all i do is go left to right making adjustments..
sounds complicated . and i am still setting mine up but for what it is worth i got RPG style editing for $81.00...
yes you can assign presets to key strokes as well.. you can program close to 90 strokes on the G13

That's what I'm talkinig about! Can't wait to get my G13. FWIW, I installed the keyboard tamer spencer suggested and I can't get it to work for nothing. I sent them a support email and have not heard back yet. I'll look at Paddy next.

But I'm sure it took you time to learn what works best for you to work fast. Just as it would take time to set something up like the G13 + Paddy for [much] less money.

Right. And if Paddy worked for Mac, you can bet where my money would go
Here's one of the problems I see with this sort of workflow... I'm too picky to simply do a few basic tweaks to images and then call it done. I usually do local adjustment brush work or take an image into Photoshop before it's totally finished.

I completely agree because I work the same way. However, it just might be useful for a good bulk of the images (depending on the images). This is also why I think the cost for what you get with the RPG setup is to high.

It only took me about an hour to to figure things out and set it up for a consistant workflow.. I still use my mouse ( Logitech Trackman marble) for local adjustments on the images that require it, but for the bulk of my work, basic editing is what takes the most time...
I have preset tone curves that i have created as well as b&w presets that are programmed into single keys..... no more scrooling and mousing around for every adjustment.. thats what the real benefit is...
all of the actions and adjustments that i use in photoshop have been assigned buttons.. I still use the mouse for Cloning and touchup work but for the most part its all at my fingertips....
It is still a work in progress because i still am getting the key stroke layout down packed but just from using it today for a few hours i can say its worth $81.00 and the time invested getting it up and running

Both keyboards work the same... I can type on both of them the exact same. They are not independent. Launching autohotkeys affects both keyboards the same as well. The difference is that one of my keyboards has a lot of little printed squares glued to the keytops so I know what they do.

RPG creator(s) can obviously charge what they see fit just like any other business. That doesn't mean everyone will be okay with that. Just like not everyone is willing to pay what photographers charge. There will always be those who see the cost too high no matter how low it may be. In the case of RPG "low" is nowhere in sight.
Are you, and those that agree with you, saying we should be okay with paying whatever the cost is? I'm sure that's not the case. Everyone has gone to a store at one time or another and looked at a price tag and thought the price was ridiculous high.
RPG price tag is far too much for *me* for the simple fact that I already knew of the alternatives and how to incorporate them enough to make me happy. The alternatives are very close to offering the same exact functionality....a little more work to get there, but as some folks have already found out, it's not super intensive and time consuming.
I think the RPG is a great idea, but so are the other options.

Certainly not WHATEVER the cost is, but I do think it's a fair price for a lot of people. I shoot about 150 days/year, so if something could cut my workflow dramatically, it would be worth way more than $600 in my opinion. If it saved me only a few hours I could make up the cost with one extra session. Then again one could argue that it'd be hard to shoot a ton without an already efficient workflow. Different strokes for different folks I guess...
