I spent a good amount of time at wppi comparing key brands and they all looked like they worked well, but the Quikeys fit best with the way my head works while editing. It actually does make things faster even though I'm speedy with a mouse. I've always been a big keyboard shortcut user, so it only made sense that this type of solution would work well for me.
All it lacks is Temp/Hue adjustments, but, it's working for me I can adjust all the "basic" develop settings with keyboard shortcuts except for Temp/hue.
Going to try out one of those Keyboard, either logitech or Belkin and program it in.
Can't say I'm enthralled with the idea of a separate hotkey-only keyboard in addition to the regular one. I can memorize... this could be a good solution for people who don't want to do their own control design and tweaking, however.
I'd be interested in a solution that would let me have programmable (extra) keys so long as it had _mechanical keys_. Hate membrane keyboards. Hate, hate, hate. Using a Das Keyboard now (essentially a modernized USB 2.0 Hub IBM Model-M).

Anything based on the XKeys unit is all mechanical.
Ah, sorry. I mis-spoke (typed?). I'd like a full keyboard, mechanical, but with an additional set of ~18 programmable keys on the left side (a la Logitech G11 V1).
For a separate add-on, the XKeys units are indeed nice. I've only ever seen them in person used for gaming, but...nice.

I use the Logitech G13 Keyboard...got a refurbished version online for around $35-$40 and then use the software QuicKeys for Mac (around $30 I think). I still use all the standard keyboard shortcuts that are available for lightroom but have programmed the logitech g13 keyboard to use as one click presets (or in my case to create a virtual copy and then apply a preset to it--all with a single button click). Works quite well.

Just set a G-key/Macro-Key to a key-combination, then remap it in LR with Paddy (a plugin for LR3.2).

I wanted to answer some of the questions above and try to point out how our $590 product is different than a DIY solution. Keep in mind that RPG is just short for Riley PhotoGraphic which is the name of our studio. So.... the RPG solution was in the beginning a DIY project of our own.
6 months of programming and lots of fun and hard work and we nailed the concept for our own studio.
So why was it so hard?
The RPG application includes a library of macros that is 1,2000 strong. It includes a Hook into the back of Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, ACR, Aperture, InDesign, Kubota's Dashboard, Nik's Viveza 2, Portrature and more.
The point being that our macro library does include the standard shortcuts mentions above in the DIY solution, but it also offers so much more. We have written code that increases the functionality of photoshop and Lightroom.
Lightroom:
Press button controls to EVERY slider in Lightroom. (no shortcuts currently exist)
Press button activation to 110 of your most loved presets. (no shortcuts currently exist)
Press button control to all of the Library module controls
Press button controls to keyworking of your liking
Press button controls to EVERY MENU item... even those that do not include shortcuts.
And way more. :-)
Photoshop:
Press button control to up to 148 photoshop actions. Imagine having F1 to F148!
Press button control to all your most used brushes
Press button control to EVERY photoshop tool
And a library of advanced macro's we have created for our wedding workflow.
I hope this extra info helps everyone understand a little more why our system is a lot different than a DIY option.
