p.4 #1 · New Camera IS COMING...

I'm waiting for Canon to make the bodies more modular so that you can choose the body and electronic backs separately.

As for a new body, I'm not going to worry about it. I upgraded my 5D to infinite focus points with the EE-S screen and my own eyes.

That Canon guy never mentioned anything about the release date, sounds more like a future prediction than a leak....

It's almost time for a new 5D. It's not top secret. What would really be helpful is if he told you WHEN.

You missed the most important upgrade of all .... the AF system. It has to be at least as good as the 7D i.e. minimum of 19 AF points ... all cross-type, of course. For me, this is #1. Noise reduction is #2.

Very few really predicted these bodies. We don't see inside Canon's kitchen, we don't always understand Canon's reasoning. For all the Flak both 5D and 5D2 got, they were pretty good commercially. That shows that even if we think we understand, we tend to misjudge.

well everyone knew the 60D was coming, even canon said it was coming (don't know why everyone thought 7D replaced it), however the fact that they made it lose features for teh first time ever was unexpected, especially with it arriving so late in the game

Video will be a little better, autofocus a little better, higher res, less banding maybe.

Just enough to make you want to update, but nothing stunning or really interesting.

I'd love to be wrong on this one though.

the 60D makes me think this will be the case
although the D7000 gives one a trace of hope, but just a trace of a trace of a trace

with all these features who will buy the 1D4

people who don't want 24-28MP files and need 10fps and want 100% VF, full sealing, integrated grip, many top sports shooters would likely still avoid the 5D3 as their #1 body due to 6.3fps, although some might and some might take it as second body

but yeah i'm sure it would take away from the 1D4 but maybe better the 5D3 does than the D800

if the 5D3 doesnt have that then what will it have? digic iv again, 4fps again, FF again, only upgrade is just 21MP to 32MP? forget that

I see zero correlation between 60D and any 5D III. One has no implication at all for the other IMO. The 60D fills the much needed niche between 550D and 7D, and in many ways it's a better camera than the 50D, in some not as good, but it's cheaper. It's an important segment to Canon, just like the 5D occupies an important market segment. The 5D II is still selling very well and they can sit back and wait for Nikon's update of the D700 before revealing their hand if need be. If the 5D III is a a mild update it will be because they will have something better as a separate model. There's not a lot wrong with the 5D II as it is, and I'm sure they will address AF as a priority. There's not a massive upgrade they could do and keep it at the same price point IMO, anyway.

The more I use the 5DII, and that is every day in all types of conditions, I pray that they get the focus right. I get enough slow focus or searching with anything but the center focus that it is a shame. The 7D is much quieter, almost no mirror black out and all the focus points work very well. Too bad it isn't FF.

I think Canon should give the people who bought the 5DII a free camera, in the 5DIII. :^)

Canon will not intergrate 7D focusing into the 5D III, if you want a Pro body with all the bells and whistles you will have to purchase a 1D.

The 7D was the result of an angry parent that will remain nameless and an encounter with Canon's CEO.

The 7D was created for the parents of student athletes.

D800? I could use a 1Ds IV, not a small, inferior Canon body.

EBH

We'd all like to see a new 1Ds, but perhaps you, and the rest of us, have the wrong mindset... I'd be willing to bet that 70%-80% of the people on this forum today had never heard of an EOS 3 when it was released in the late 90's. It was an exciting time for me (I didn't buy one, but wanted to try it). Regardless of the collective longevity here, we should all be asking Canon, "Why does a small camera (i.e., one without the grip *always* attached) have to be inferior"?

Professional level features can be put in a body the size of the 5d. Putting it succinctly, a no excuses, no bull shit, no half-assed amateur level AF, FPS, VF, etc. camera that can be used 'professionally' - whatever that means - and for family portraits if god forbid a working photographer actually has a family and wants to keep a camera handy while on excursions or enjoying the backyard.

After using Canon for decades, my all time favorite is still the 1VHS. A camera that could be turned into the a 1V (one without the grip) and was the prototype for the 1D series. The key for me is flexibility and the only thing that comes close to offering that today is a 5 series (I & II); cameras that can be pressed into service, but don't always shine (no interest in arguing the point with anyone).

It doesn't have to be a "3", why not a real "1"? Call it a 1D[whatever], but I wish Canon would just stop being obtuse for a change. I also wish there was a Santa clause though, so as the saying goes, "so much for that:.

Hmm.

It is obvious that Canon had the exact same mindset when they were spec'ing the 60D ... and Nikon readily took advantage of it with the D7000.

Now it remains to be seen if Canon product managers will learn something from this experience as well (as they did from the D300 experience ).

That might have been the case in the past, but I believe what Canon does with the 5DII replacement, or a new model, not only hinges on what they have planned for the 1DsIV but also on direct competition. Nikon is absolutely forcing Canon's hand and constantly upping the bar. The 7D, as mentioned time and time again, is clearly a response to that. As for what the 7D was "created for", what you say is a complete underestimate. The camera is marketed towards a much larger group than "parents of student athletes", in fact many pro sports photographers and wildlife photographers have adopted it.

I'm not sure the market for parents shooting their student athletes is even all that large in Japan compared to the US and from what I hear Canon doesn't care too much about any opinions coming from outside of Japan. I could be wrong though on both counts.

Gee...
I guess it might depend on the $$$millions$$$ that parent spent with Canon every year.
