The same thing could have been said for those who always wanted an XXD with 'pro' AF--then came the 7D. Canon sacrificed 1D sales in order to retain market share lost to Nikon and its D300/s. Again, Canon can only go on so long with its current (Past?) marketing strategies before they are slowly swallowed up by the competition. Some people seem to ignore this, but I'm willing to bet Canon isn't.

There'll always be reasons.
Higher FPS ? A new "gadget" or "trick" ? Even better AF ?
I personally found the 1D(s) series to be more for the working crowd, if you have to stare through the VF for hours a day everyday, and have the budget for it, that 2% extra wide VF and brightness can be such a simple but so pleasant thing. Ditto for all the other advantages other then AF the 1D series will strategically keep over their lower parts.
Dear Canon
I am tired to reach every 10 Min to my Bag to switch from 5DII to 7D and back.
It is so frustrating to have the right camera in the form of two bodies,
one has the details and the other the speed.
I think i understand your Math...
7d + 5DII = 1D mark 4.......
Also please introduce the 100-400 the way it should be: Sharper with a twist.

Actually, I see a huge correlation between the 60D and a potential 5D3/3D. The 60D (like many cameras before) show Canon's concern for how it fits into their model line. It's quite obvious that the question they ask is "how will this fit in our line up?" As a company whose main goal is to make as much money as possible (aka a successful company), they need to make sure that their lower-end models don't cannibalize their higher-end models. People need a reason to upgrade. Pretty much every successful company in the world does this. Want an Apple laptop with a 15" screen? You're going to pay for a beefier processor as well whether you wanted it or not.
Now, I would guess that none of us would have any problem with this had Nikon not turned the world upside down. The question that they seem to be asking is "how can we build the best camera possible for the price"?
To truly "beat" Nikon, Canon must either start asking the same question, or leapfrog Nikon so much with its top-end models that it has enough "breathing room" for its lower-end models to be able to better the Nikons without cannibalizing its higher models (which is what Canon had been able to do up until the D3/D300)....Show more →
I could care more or less who beat who in this camera world. I have a camera now that I'm happy with and does everything I want it to do. I don't shoot sport so I don't need or care about 10fps. I don't need 100MP now. When I'm ready for my next camera, I'll evaluate all the camera and see my option. I'm not sure why so many are concern about the competition between Canon and Nikon.

As nice as that may be to contemplate, it's just not ever going to happen.
The old days of buying a high end camera and having it last for 10, 20, 30+ years are long gone. We'll all be lucky to get 10 years from any digital body we buy today and use regularly; and I think canon, Nikon, et. al. would like the failure rate to be high enough that it insures it doesn't even go that long. I'm sorry to say that thinking you'll have a lifetime camera is unrealistic.
We will not be able to get replacement sensors, chips, mechanisms of all kinds for today's products. Canon will maintain parts for a certain length of time (I'd estimate 5-6 years) and then render the product obsolete and unrepairable. Independents may have stockpiled some parts, but otherwise, it's going to be "landfill, here it comes"...

Because that competition is what drives the future cameras that Canon will make available to us.
The only time I really care is when I'm ready for upgrade. If Nikon have better price and features for my money then I'll buy Nikon. If Canon happen to have better camera with better price then I'll buy Canon. I'm never loyal to any brand and don't care about competition between the two company. The only time I care is when I'm ready to buy.

The 1ds3 or the 1d4 should fit the bill just fine for you. Though to be honest, if you are switching between two cameras like the 7d / 5d2, i would think about your shooting style. As they shoot very very differently.

I think thats true for alot of today's produced "goods". That being said, even if my digital camera survived for 10years, i would probably have been drooling over another long before it died.
Lets be honest, we love the new gadgetry they add, and the upgrades in IQ, we WANT new cameras. : )
Generally speaking repair wise, in terms of Cameras, canon cares about their 1d(s) series, so if you get one of those, you'll get longer mileage in terms of repairs. Not to mention that the production cycle is that much lower. So if you're using a camera regularly and want something to last, that'd be my bet.

Talk about the 100-400mm, there is rumor that the mark II is coming somewhere next year! I hope this is true..
