We all know something is coming, it happens every year, sometimes two or three times a year. However, Canon seems to be in the minor upgrade mode and was burned with the 60D compared to the D7000.
Hopefully, they will put something in the next new DSLR's that would make me want to upgrade from my 5D MK II or my backup 1D MK III.
The guy described the 5D3 to you, which is obvious : everyone here know it will come some time. Now, add the fact this employee did not discolse a date to you.
Bottom line : there is nothing new here, and no one will be fired. This fantastic 5D3 thing will come most likely (more than 50% chance) next summer, but maybe in February at PMA (the third option that it would appear later is much less likely).
But this just confirmed something new is coming from Canon for the DSLR...
The source is really the master of the obvious... surely Canon is going to release a new DSLR at some point in time, they aren't ready to drop off the market yet... So whence the excitement?
Are we not all master of the obvious... But mainly looking 20/20 hind sight?
How many predicted the 5D?
How many predicted a +3 year life cycle?
How many predicted the 7D?
How many predicted the 60D?
Very few really predicted these bodies. We don't see inside Canon's kitchen, we don't always understand Canon's reasoning. For all the Flak both 5D and 5D2 got, they were pretty good commercially. That shows that even if we think we understand, we tend to misjudge.
My money is on the 5D MK III being slightly warmed over version of the MK II.
Video will be a little better, autofocus a little better, higher res, less banding maybe.
Just enough to make you want to update, but nothing stunning or really interesting.

I'd love to be wrong on this one though.
Indeed.
It's the most likely scenario, since that is the Canon way.
I dont think its a question of if a new camera is comming but WHEN
It seems a badly kept secret that the 1Ds4 should have been launched the september but for some reason has been sent back to be developed some more. (Better hold it back and make it great than put out something not so great just to meet a show) . But as that will be the Flagship body it probably means any other FF addition/replacement (3D/5D3) will be delayed also 'cos Canon will want to milk the 1D cow for a little while before giving us the 'son of 1Ds4' (maybe even longer if the AF and stuff is enough for most users).
And the competition hasn't exactly rushed the D4, D4x & D800 out the door either . Canon may want to be the one to releas the pro body last this time round.
Does anyone know the main differences between the D700 and the D3s? Nikon seems to have created their own equivalent of a beefed up 5DII without completely cannibalizing their equivalent of the 1DIV or 1DsIII.
I wonder how far they can push a 5DIII until it actually starts to interfere too much with sales of whatever the 1DsIV would be.
Hopefully they won't release a 5DIII with such limited AF as they had in the 5DII.

not much of a surprise - my guess is it's simply the replacement for the 5D2, which is now over two years old.
here's another guess: they'll put more or less the 7D's AF in the upcoming 5D2 successor and call it 'pro AF'. then they'll add a couple of foam strips to the 5D2 body and call it an 'increase in build quality'. both wouldn't technically be falsehoods, but in practice a bit underwhelming when considering the price and how many times canon will probably use the word 'exciting' in their press release.
cheers
What do you consider as pro AF? Nikon D700's 51 AF points with only 15 cross type? Pfft... I'd rather have 7D's 19 ALL cross type AF. Quality over quantity, trimmed of excess fat.
What's wrong with the 5D2 build quality? I haven't heard of any 5D2 falling apart while being used.
And what words do you expect Canon to use in their press release?
"Here's a new camera, it's called 5D Mk III. Just go to our website and check the specs yourself. If you like it, buy it, if not, don't."

Didnt see that many complain about the 1Ds2 (and other 1D bodies) that 'made do' with 45-point autofocus with 'only' 7 cross-type sensors.
Infact more complained about the 1D3 system and its 19 cross points
also the 1D4 makes do with those 19 cross points as well
if a single axis point picks up the contrast well enough then it should focus fine. If all the points were single axis one way it would struggle to AF on a target where the lines went in the same direction but would be just as good as all cross type if the lines ran in the opposite axis

A lot of IFs there mate.
Would you agree that the complaints on the 1D3 AF is because of some sort of design flaw and has nothing to do with whether it's cross type or not?
My point is that having more AF points doesn't necessarily mean it's a better AF system and the impression I get is that while Canon is obsessed with MP, Nikon on the other hand seems to be obsessed with AF points.

Sorry , I stand corrected, was looking at the wrong diagram.
makes you wonder why bother leaving the 6 in the middle line out?
the middle line goes : [ + l l + ( l + l ) + l l + ]
But then I notice that all pints a single axis in ' l ' for slower lenses , only 2.8 or faster (f4 middle) are +
