Curtis, the least you could do is chew those veggies and fruits rather than drinking them. Where's the fun in that? And yes, I too, stay away from docs and hospitals as much as possible. Hopefully I can escape my last medical drama with as little intervention as possible, and go merrily on my way again. Waiting for that sunflower field to bloom again too!

You know how to hurt a guy Chin with these gorgeous photos of MEAT... Exactly what every vegan foregoes... dead animals. The photos are gorgeous though, especially the first one so thoughtfully presented. And, of course, delivered with your usual rhetorical flair. You do have a way with words my friend.
I didn't realize the thing with your eye was quite so serious. You mentioned it relative to the photo Sue took of the two of us. I'm glad you took care of it. I'm a bit like my dad. He had a draft physical when he was seventeen near the end of World War I and next saw a doctor when he was 70. Of course, I'm with a health maintenance organization through Medicare and they INSIST on bugging me every year until I come in for a brief physical. And I'm serious when I call it bugging. Real live people leave repeated messages on my telephone until I return the call. Then they ask to schedule an appointment. So far, so good, but I'd rather avoid doctors if I can. I know that decision is not ultimately my own...
Now back to MY breakfast... a smoothie made with three frozen bananas, three stalks of celery and a handful of frozen blueberries with a cup and a half of water... mmm good, just like a shake, but without the milk.
Quick edit from this morning, cool nights + humidity = some clearing fog. Some liberties taken with the saturation slider (think Velvia with slight underexposure and nope, I don't miss film anymore). D700 & 135Q.

BTW: What is the preferred image size nowadays?
/Eike
I do 1200 pixels horizontal and no more than 1000 vertical (if portrait).
For panos or other images that deserve being seen on a wide screen (which is typically 1920 pixels wide these days) I do 1,500 and occasionally 2,000 pixels.

Medical Marijuana in your smoothies

Recreational marijuana is now "legal" in California and communities in Marin County are deliberating how they will approve retail outlets to deliver the goods. Unless the Justice Department under Jeff Sessions follows through on its threats to intervene where states have authorized recreational marijuana, we'll likely be enjoying the weed much as the residents of Colorado and Washington are. As with "demon rum" I believe the time has come to end "reefer madness" in the form of jail sentences for having a toke or two. But I doubt my smoothies will ever be the delivery mechanism. And, truth be told, I'd still likely prefer a good single malt scotch whisky than a toke or two...
Eike, I generally use the same dimensions John uses, though it I have an interesting panorama I'll go to 1600 pixels wide. I believe Fred still holds to a smaller size but then most of us have our images hosted at another site, so size isn't burdening Fred's servers. Granted, larger files can take longer to display which would be a challenge for those who don't have high speed broadband service. My Xfinity service gives me 260 Mbps which means I have no trouble loading pages. My guess is that Leighton and a few others don't have this level of service. So keeping image size within reasonable bounds is a "community service" we do for one another. That was also the original intention with our "limit" of four photos per post. Clearly, as the thread has slowed down there is less need for that limit. In fact, the longer posts seem to serve the community. All I know is that I've no intention to play policeman about any of these things. The best we can do is offer encouragement and if asked, an honest opinion. Good to see you Eike.
PS - I also recall that some are viewing images on laptops that have smaller screens. In fact, when I view the site on the MacBook Air I keep at Sue's home I find myself on occasion having to not only scroll, but shift from side to side to see an entire image. I think a 1200 pixel width would work for most devices, except, of course a smart phone.
Keep your chin up and things will get better. At out meeting over dinner you impressed me and Robin about your character. You demonstrated your caring nature when you talked about the care you gave your late husband. True, you have had a tough year, no doubt but you’re up to it.
I made the following quote mine after falling and breaking both legs. It was said by Bob Marley and it carried the day for me. Hope it works for you!
“You never know how strong you are until strength is you only thing you got!”

Since I can't drink anymore, I'd LOVE it if Virginia legalized it! Might have to move to CA. D
Or we can send a care package...
We could label it "Nikon Lens..."
I haven't had any alcohol in six months and have a sense I'll continue not drinking. My brother stopped drinking in his mid-seventies after a lifetime of enjoying his schnapps. Alcohol as I've perhaps mentioned on this thread is a "gateway" drug for me when it comes to eating. When I'm sipping something... beer, wine, whisky... I often have my hand in a cellophane bag with either popcorn or corn ships or on occasion even potato chips. Since I don't work twelve hours in the field, the calories from that bag end up around my middle. My move to a vegan diet coupled with no drinking has yielded about a 17 pound weight loss this summer, for which I'm grateful. When I'm hiking up and down hills it is helpful to remember without weight loss, I'm carrying the equivalent of an extra bowling ball for each 15 pounds I carry. At my highest weight, which was five years before I started this thread, I weighed 260 pounds. I now weigh 183. That's a lot of bowling balls! And, in fact, my weight loss from that plateau came about through hiking the hills of Marin, so at one time I was carrying that much weight.
From what I've read, the weight at which I move from "overweight" to normal weight is 164 pounds, so I'm certainly not there yet. But because I know that it is difficult for me to practice moderation when I'm imbibing my favorite spirits, it makes sense simply to stop. The test will be this winter since it has always been the winter months when a wee dram feels most appealing. Perhaps this winter it will be a hot cup of chai... I'll let you know how it goes.
Laura, keep your chin up, like someone said on the last page, all the best with your dad's situation. And stay healthy yourself!
Glad to see the posters continuing to post.
Mihai, a lot of photos in a post is a lot better than none at all for eons Looks like that subject did not at all mind the classic 105 pointed at her. Enjoying the scenes from your town.
Ray, fantastic, love the bird in that scene (heron?).
Eike, glad to see you posting again! Jay, wow, that's some climb!
Chin, that sounds like a lot of discomfort just getting to the point where you had the procedure, which itself didn't sound pleasant. Glad your excellent cooking is giving you something else to think about during recovery.

Like a backalley arms deal, you popped open the trunk
Then unzipped the green canvas bag to display the goods
Arm stretched out in a welcoming flourish
And amongst all I pointed to that snub nose with the dark metal barrel
That one, if there were any I could loan, I'd like that one
The 35/1.4 AIS
Didn't get any good shots with it at all
But that don't stop me from browsing through eBay from time to time
Having a crop sensor camera now makes me re-think lens selections
And hey, the 35 would be great as a 50...

Had a minor procedure yesterday evening to remove the stye in my left lower eyelid
I've got an extremely low tolerance for pain and needles
(The doctor peered at me funny when I mentioned I used to be a transplant coordinator)
He cut a tiny 5mm slit and dug out the debris under local anaesthesia
It took all my willpower not to cuss out loud
So now that I'm home with one good eye, and not fit to drive out to get lunch, I made my own
Wagyu rump steak, cooked sous vide at 130F for an hour and a half
Seasoned with salt and pepper then rubbed with a thin coat of butter
Seared for 30 seconds each side in a ripping hot cast iron pan filled with just a tablespoon of avocado oil
Fried rice in the drippings; leftover rice with egg and smoked pork belly, plus the jus strained through a coffee filter
Served with a tiny ramekin of laoganma spicy chilli crisps sauce and a cup of jasmine tea
Not vegan at all, sorry
quick update, cautiously optimistic for the moment.
he is better, somewhat. he can stand to pivot from bed to wheelchair with people holding him. can get a spoon from the pudding to his mouth more than his nose. has to do honey thickened liquids due to his swallowing problem. speech is now up to stop it. they had been giving him antibiotics for the aspiration pneumonia anyhow.
Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers for him!
Curtis, I contemplated getting a bottle of single malt whisky to share but I couldn't find a bottle shop before heading your way. Yeah, and I was in Vegas; perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough... you'll have to make do with Singapore Breakfast Tea ::
But I'm curious, don't you carry anything on your hikes? Snacks, a granola bar, chocolates, kombucha?
