Long term reader of this terrific MF lens thread which provided a darn strong push to pick up a few of these mechanical beauties. It took quite a bit of time of research and sourcing minty examples but it was well worth the effort.
A small contribution:
Took this one a while back with the D40 &105/2.5 Ai, at f/4. Surprisingly, I could MF with the D40 much better than expected.
Too bad to hear...But I would say that instead of fixing it, buy a new one. It´s probably cheaper. I bought mine for about 100USD but it´s easy to find one for 80 in decent condition. I love mine and it´s definitely a keeper even though I have the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF ED.

Thanks, Kristian.
I'm always interested to see what you and others do with the 80-200/4 AI-s. I almost never use mine that I bought several years ago ago from KEH. I should have sent it back, but my mom had died right after it arrived. Dealing with the usual funeral arrangements and then a lengthy, somewhat difficult probate process consumed my time and energy until long after the allowed return time. Photography really wasn't on my mind.
The lens makes strange, grinding sounds when zooming. Also there is major focus shift when zooming. In spite of this it still produces sharp images, but it's unpleasant to use. I don't know if it's worth trying to get it fixed....Show more →
Many thanks Kristian and glad you enjoyed the photos.
Took this one with the Nikkor 45/2.8 AIP making good use of the stomach. The D40 is a tiny package with the little bugger plus no fuss with manual metering.
I am often amazed at how small old school lenses are compared to the new plastic composite wonders.
D40, ISO 200 @ f/5.6
The 105/2.5 Ai which never fails to impress when focus is in the ball park.
Brought the 55mm/2.8 micro out for a bit of D610 camera time in our garden this afternoon.
We have had glorious weather for the last 3 weeks and more is forecast.
We could really do with some rain since the garden is wilting.
Having said that there is plenty of colour.
Callistemon = Bottle brush. Just started flowering.
Well, it will be a bit before I can post new photos. My D3 shutter failed at just 99111 actuations. With not a lot of money, a huge car repair bill just behind me and another huge electricity bill ahead of me, it will be a while before I can afford a replacement camera.
I'm afraid I am now forced to merely lurking around this thread with no photos to post.
Sorry to hear that Buddy that's very low for a D3 shutter failure. Would a repair not be cheaper than a D3X? I'm assuming Kristina isn't too keen to loan you hers ? (I forget what she has, D700? D800?)
I feel ya about the lack of cash, my D800 desperately needs a CLA, the view and delete buttons are sticky and shooting at f16 for long exposures at dusk revealed a whole load of sensor dust/dirt but alas I'm broke having just bought another telescope (sold my extreme macro gear to pay for it )
Continuing the pics from Fitzroy Island. Took a walk up to the lighthouse and then the summit of the island for sunset.
There are 2 ways to the top, via the Lighthouse Track which has concrete tracks for vehicular access to the lighthouse and the Summit track which we took down (hundreds of steps)
Major bummer, Buddy. Hopefully you'll get it up and running soon enough.

That is extremely low for a D3 shutter indeed.
Nikon stopped repairing D3 shutter failure in 2016. Even if I wanted to get it repaired, best I can get is a 3rd party repair with a shutter salvaged from a broken parts D3.
Kristina has no problem borrowing me the D800 occasionally, but for paid assignments we mostly need two cameras.
The secondary shutter release button of this D3 fell off some 20 000 actuations ago. Never had the time to get it repaired either

Wow Serge, very impressive with the 45 2.8 P and D40! And the Nikkor 105s were just meant for the kind of scene you have in the second shot!
Charles, wonderful portrait and background with the 50 1.2!
Kristian, love your scenes with the 80-200 f4, as well as the close ups with the extension rings!
Thank you Samy I am still learning how to use the 50/1.2. Very interesting lens. From f/2.0 to f/4.0 it is incredibly sharp
