I do like Rams idea of a meet with lenses .....
Though for us poor UK based people we have to consider the cost of just getting over the pond, and then the price of getting to areas we might not want to go to. ....... I prefer to travel to NYC or the eastern sea-board, or my real preference would be California, but then that is a whole lot more expense and toll on the body ...
Just my 2 penny-worth.
I have been engaged in a restoration project over the holiday period and the final part for the mechanical restoration arrived all the way from Palo Alto this morning. Just a plastic hinge, but seems one of the very few places that carry bits for old stuff.
So I now have the cosmetics to sort out.
I popped on the 105mm f2.8 micro
and shot a few pix of the project.
I bought the deck and tone-arm back in the early 80's and it saw good service for a few years, but with moving house and changing the sound system I ran, it got relegated to the also ran cupboard.
Looking on eBay thinking I might just sell the parts, I noticed the exact same configuration as mine, minus the cartridge for around $3000, which got me thinking.
So I'm now not selling, but using again. Specially as I have a reasonable collection (subjective opinion) of vinyl records going back to the mid 60's
So here are a few pix of the set up as restored but not tarted up yet. And it has had it's first play today ....
Drool!!! One of these days I will post pics of my turntable setup. Nothing as nice as your Thorens setup, but the preamp, amp, speakers were all built by me and cross into the high end side of things.
I am selling some of my Nikon AIS collection but a member sent me a PM reminding me of the joy I get from these manual vintage lenses. The images below are both taken hand held with a Nikkor 180mm F2.8 ED. Notice how the moon image has no color bleeding from the edges thanks to the ED glass. I believe the Nikkor 180ED was the first lens to use ED glass.
I also heard there is an adapter for the F mount. If Nikon is smart, the adapter will come with the camera. 16mm flange distance... Adapted lenses on a Nikon body. Sounds fun.
Very glad you have the mirrorless - how significant is the weight saving on a rig like that?
Thanks Peter.
Yes Peter, it is significantly lighter than a D610 (640g x 1350g - with battery), and the body is also thinner - more space left in the bag.
I am still learning to use the camera but:
The things I am liking:
- focus peaking for quick focus (hand held, moving birds, etc)
- focus magnification for tripod work and fixed subjetcs
Both far better than the not always precise focus dot of Nikon DSLRs viewfinder.
-the sensor looks like superb and perhaps even better than the D810 one?!
Things I dislike:
- as someone pointed out (Leighton or Kevin?), the menu system is odd to be polite;
- and the battery life is ridiculous! You need to buy 1-2 more batteries for a day long shooting session...
They had an adapter for the 1 Series, most likely if the mount changes for that camera, they'll have an adapter for it too

Thanks Scott, Samy. It was good to get out and shoot again, though the furthest I ventured out was opening the car door and standing right outside. Even took some shots elsewhere thru the windshield. I did notice that in certain frames the exhaust from the car blew across the picture and caused some atmospheric blurring.
This next one took very well to a NikSilverEFX treatment. D700, 28 f2.8 AIS.
New NIkons should be good news, perhaps it will add financial life to Nikon. I do fear that it will all be targeted at the high end of the pricing scale, including the native lenses.
For those here using Sony A7 series and MF Nikon lenses, I Just created this humble group at flickr for photo sharing and discussions about the best ways to enjoy using thisequipment.
