The kids host now. We show up with something to contribute, eat, and leave. Took a while to adjust to not hosting, but I'm liking the new role we have.

I'm more of a sampler myself, but that sounds like a great strategy. What did you do on the next meal, or is your household a "no leftover" household?

I'm very sorry to read of your health challenges, Kevin. I can only hope that doctors eventually make it manageable. I don't know enough about cataracts but I'm wondering why they won't just operate now?
My blurry spots are not in my main line of sight. Once they are, then we talk surgery.

I’ve had catarac operations on both my eyes. It was a relative easy operation. Took 1/2 an hour or so and it was outpatient (had to look this word up 🥴 ). The next day I could take off the bandage and my sight was already way better than before the operation.
Year end gear comparison - two rigs with 960mm EFL. D800/D850 with 600mm f5.6 ais and tc16a, and D7200 with 400mm f5.6 ais and tc16a. The D7200 combo has some surprising advantages besides weight, and size. It acquires focus faster (simpler AF?), can be handheld, and has a higher keeper rate. The full frame gives a more pleasant OOF area, crop-ability, better DOF, and a file that can be (if need be) pushed further. I tend to use both with mono-pods that have tri-foot ends that rest on the pan of my mobility scooter when outside, and desktop tripods for in home bird snooping.
Shot with 5DS-R and Nikkor 50mm f1.2 ais of comparison subjects mounted on various Koolehaoda brand desktop tripods and ball heads.

The differences of the Ai compared to the AiS are:
3/4 turn of the focus ring vs. a bit less than 1/2 on the AiS
7 blade aperture vs. 9 blades on the AiS
Likely improved coatings on the AiS, especially later models, as Nikon continually refined their lens coatings
As was typical of Ai lenses, a more robust lens mount (heavier metal and 5 mounting screws) while the AiS dropped to 3 mounting screws
Ai generally a bit heavier and classic looking shiney-paint
For me, I prefer the shorter focus throw of the AiS (it already "pops" into focus given the small depth of field) and most would say that more aperture blades == better. The Ai goes for a bit less "ouch" money than the AiS, so that's one consideration....Show more →
Nocts are likely the only lens I will never have, but I am enjoying yours!

I got some not so great news from my eye doctor…at some point I will need surgery on both eyes. Can’t do it now as my eyes aren’t to the surgery needed level yet and I’m not healthy enough for it anyway. Over thanksgiving I got Covid for the second time and immediately after for a very nasty infection and sepsis. Was hospitalized for it. So, I will be keeping my 55/1.2, my F2, and probably my 24/2.8 and letting go of the rest. I still have my Fuji XT2 and a couple of AF lenses to go with, but I feel my photography is on its last legs. ...Show more →

More from The Hall of Flame ! GFX + 28PC or 105/1.8
I'm trying to maintain the atmosphere of a dark museum hall with these. I did actually shoot them with the ACROS Black & White preset on in the EVF but once I changed the first shot I processed in LrC colour via the Fuji Velvia/Vivid preset I was hooked.
Sometime added a little vignette here, a highlighted area courtesy of a radial filter here and there, a bit of Haze reduction etc etc or nothing as some of the shots from the GFX just appear in camera and in Lightroom where I don't need to do anything (it just does it, more luck than judgement or skill I swear ).
I have not been anywhere other than shopping for Christmas, cleansing house before Christmas, wrapping gifts for Christmas, cooking for Christmas, cleaning after Christmas, resting from Christmas......
At least tomorrow I will be at the festival of lights, SD botanical garden.
Here are the results of the home Xmas preparations. Tree with 50mm 1.4 at 1.4, with only grandma's macrame decorations. No Noct but pleasing rendition.
This is Southern California, Christmas day was 72F, with warm pleasing sun, dinner was outside and noone was cold. Nikkor 15mm 3.5 ais. (Texas of Florida: I am not coming )
To distract myself from the idea---mysteriously planted in my head recently---that I somehow need a $4200 (CDN) Ai-s Noct (pretty cheap, really, considering the $10,500 Z version, right?), I will continue the task of clearing up my summer/fall photos. The set below shows some monochrome non-human rear ends from the Hot August Nights car show in Comox, brought to you by my Fuji X-T4 with Lens Turbo II and either the 50 f/1.4 SC (first and third images) or the 24 f/2.8 NC (second shot).

I'm liking your work with the dark museum. These lenses are holding up well with the GFX's resolution. I think we saw it when George was using the Fuji as well.
Thanks Leighton. You know George still has a GFX50Sii ? Hang on, doesn't he also have a Noct ? Must be nice eh ?

Nah, he's a nice guy and besides, I am hoping he will send me the 24 killer lens when he get's tired of it. Gotta keep on his good side!

Fair enough Problem is, I don't think he's EVER going to get tired of it (and why would he?)
