My first 24mm Nikkor was an AI-converted NC, and I never had any complaints about it (though the focusing helicoid eventually jammed and I had to sell it since I couldn't get it serviced where I lived in Denmark at the time). I "upgraded" to a 24/2 AiS (which of course has some issues with corner softness and swirly bokeh, so is held in low esteem by many). I personally like my 24/2, but would be the first to admit that the 24/2.8 was a sharper lens wide-open, and flared less as well. I'm curious what problems you have with the 24/2.8 NC performance?...Show more →
Mine is soft in the corners and particulary bad when used on my IR converted D610.
That's why I tend to use the 18-35 G lens for IR work. It is super sharp throughout the zoom range.
