No raptors found today, and just one lousy warbler, so I headed to the farmers market for the first daylight test of the Nikkor 800/8 AI-S. Drone fliers, eat your heart out! Also getting first use was the acclaimed Wimberley gimbal WH-200 and a new tripod:

Camera JPEGS are uncropped, and lightly processed. Exposure was manual, f/11, 1/200s, ISO 100, i.e. Sunny 16. Also, manual WB (sunny):

WH-200 was perfectly balanced with low drag settings. I could adjust framing with one finger and shoot without any shutter delay (I needed 10s with the old alu tripod while it stopped oscillating). This 35-year old supertele is sharp as a tack when focus is achieved (not easy given the narrow DOF). Inspect the 1x-scale crops from the last two images above:

The watch reads 12:40 and is within 2min of the EXIF timestamp.

It operates year round on Civic Center vacant parking lots, rain or shine. The second large market is Thursday morning and early afternoon. That is the one we visited. Always love to see market shots from around the world. Interesting to see the eggs just sitting on the table. Here in Virginia, we are required to keep them cold until the time of purchase. How much were they for a dozen?

I like your processing with this Samy. There's a FB page called "Abandoned in Virginia" where folks share images similar to this of abandoned buildings they find. There's some really cool shots on there.

There may be a FB page like it for Maryland.

Thanks Leighton, that particular one needs an abandoned in Michigan page though

Jose, good to document what uncontrolled development can do.

Thanks Glen, that was great for Laura to start the moving objects thread since normally one doesn't think of these vintage lenses when shooting action. Very enjoyable air museum shots.

Joseph, cool acquisition of the radio-35 Nikkor. Agree with others, there's just a few more to complete your collection of metal ring Nikkors

Philippe, enjoyed your parade pics. Had to look up the origin of spahis, since that's a term used commonly in many areas. Spahis or sipahis were orignially the Ottoman Turkish troops, and the term is derived from Persian.

Francis, wow, very impressive portrait with the Noct. Looks like you have put the Noct to use very sparingly, hope to see more from that lens!

Chris, cool whisky bokeh

Ken (Portland), great processing of that factory image.

George, lovely rust at Cape Hatteras!

James, superb close up shot of the blue jay feather! Very cool setup, and thanks for your writeup!

Kevin, those leaves must have been tiny !

Andy, superb coastline scenery

Curtis, very nice market pics!

Rafael, those 18 3.5 pics remind me that I meant to get to some or the other auto show this summer. I can afford at least one of the model cars

Steve, that first Canal du Midi shot was fantastic, keep on going back to look at it!

Laura, very interesting formation, and the clouds complete that pic!

Kristian, wow, that's a long vacation, look forward to seeing some of your 1400 shots. The krystal klear water is very inviting

Rico, love the shot of the 800 on its robust setup, and that lens is sure good for surveillance!

Still digging through the Northern Michigan pics, and haven't gotten film from there developed. This was with the Df and 35 2.8 PC-Nikkor. I was there with the tripod, trying to get the fading light on the calm water. The guy came up to me and talked about film cameras he used in the old days. He said he wanted to make sure he didn't get into the frame and walked behind me. And then went around, right into the frame!

If that means you didn't like them I would understand, though Lagavulin is my favorite single malt, the 16 year old version. It has the qualities of an Islay whisky which can be an acquired taste.

Sorry Leighton, but I wasn't shopping for eggs and didn't check the price.

I agree with you, market shots are always interesting and it definitely is fun to see markets from around the world. I'll re-post a shot from Istanbul during my visit in 2012 with Rinie. This was shot with the 50 f/1.2 AI-s.

I went to hunt for some birds in the woods earlier, and my strategy didn't pay off. When I realized it was a wash, I locked up my gear and pulled out the Df with the Nikkor 55mm Micro F3.5 to go goof around.

This area is a small swamp caused by a creek that sort of just ends in a mud puddle about 50 yards square.

I don't have a reason for liking this photo. It's rather snap-shotish. But, maybe I like the tree in the frame and the jigsaw light patterns.

F8 1/4 second

Cheers!

Thanks Samy,

I like both the house shot and the lake shot you posted. There is something special about abandoned buildings

Here´s one tucked in the jungle in Bali. Perhaps it was gonna be one of those villas for tourists they tend to build everywhere on the island. Maybe they ran out of money. I´m also not really sure it´s totally abandoned...

I know... it seems rather impossible to do since I'm such a lover of cheese. At the moment I'm simply reading the science related and learning about the health benefits of eating a whole food plant based diet. Time will tell what changes this will have on what I choose to eat. At the moment I'm on an acid-reducing diet to deal with acid reflux, with guidance from a doctor. That has prompted me to do more in-depth reading on the subject. It is difficult following the guidance of the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, who receive the bulk of their financial support from agribusiness and pharmaceutical interests... or from the federal government which appears more interested in supporting agribusiness and big pharma than in pursuing public health. So I'm trying to educate myself. I'd like to live to be a hundred...

I´m really trying to eat more and more plant based food, but I´m also having a hard time not eating the cheese . I´ve watched a whole lot of documetaries about the health and environmental benefits of eating plant based. I had no idea, but to produce one kg beef it takes about 10m3 water. I recommend you watch "Forks over knifes", it´s a really good documentary about the health benefits of eating plant based food

I forgot about that Leighton. Interesting as I've been doing my reading and viewing, how many athletes are turning to a vegan diet. Without protein from meat, these athletes are having great success. Of course, when reminded that protein is produced by plants and exists in meat only because they eat plants, I guess that shouldn't be surprising. One thing that surprised me when doing my research is that a mother's milk has around 2 percent protein in it. Nature says that is an adequate amount of protein for an infant to grow into childhood. I think we misunderstand our body's need for protein and likely eat too much meat, fish and poultry.

Well, I´ve been working through some of the material from the trip. We spent two weeks on a little island, Gili Air, outside of Lombok, which is part of Indonesia. Then we spent another a bit more than a week on Bali which we flew to. I should start from the beginning...

The only way of getting a ride on Gili Air is to go by horse behind in a wagon. Felt very old fashioned but it worked out really well. The locals on the islands are using bicycle or electric driven motorbike. They are self reliant in electricity since they have their own solar cell park generating enough power. This means there are no loud vehicles or motors around making noise. The only noise were from tourist resorts blasting out music having partys on the beach all night Also, they were celebrating the muslim highlight Ramadan so there was quite some noise from the mosque and the minaretes.

Anyway here´s one of the "rides" from Gili Air.
