Fujifilm X-S10 + adapter + Nikkor 300mm f/4.5K ED non-IF, hand held, ISO 500, f/5.6 at 1/800s. 92% cropped (24/26MP). Unusually the nest is located over an old paving stone!

We have a bird in our part of the world that likes to build its nest like this one, in gravel mostly. The bird is called a Killdeer and the eggs are very similar to the Southern Lapwing.
When I worked for the power company many years ago in the substation dept, we were constantly driving our big trucks through the gravel of the substation yard. Whenever we noticed a Killdeer nesting, we would stop and put up orange traffic cones around the nest to protect it.
There are K and AI versions of it. There is an gold ring to indicate it’s ED. About 1800 made total. I recall Jose has one, John has one. Good luck finding one.
Scenario at 800m of distance, atmosphere relatively clean.
Left: Nikkor 300mm f/4.5K ai'd ED non-IF; right: Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 ais EDIF.
Top to bottom: centre, left border and righ border crops.
All shots with a D610 + tripod, Live view focusing, mirror lockup and remote shutter. ISO 200.
Images straight out of the camera - printscreen images!
And about CA, at least on the D610 sensor: CA in Nikkors 300mm f/4.5K ED(non-IF) vs. f/4.5 ais EDIF by Jose, on Flickr
Just to show CA in Nikkors 300mm f/4.5K ED(non-IF) vs. f/4.5 ais EDIF - wide open at right border a 0.2/24.2Mp (0.8% crop). The older design controls CA much better and is sharper border to border.
1st: Nikkor 300mm f/4.5K (factory ai'd) ED (non-IF);
2nd: Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 ais EDIF
Each comparative shot was:
Left: set at infinity focus
Middle: set at MFD (4m & 2.5m)
Bottom: set at MFD and with hood extended.
All shots with D610 + Nikkor 85mm f/1.8K factory ai'd + tripod + built in flash + diffuser; ISO 200, wide open (f/1.8) at 1/60s.
I do not have the 300/4.5 non IF K, ai or ais, but suppose it is less sharp than the ED(non-IF) version.

Thanks Chuong, I'll be keeping an eye out for one.

I believe I have one, I will drag it out later and see what the serial number is. I think this is one I grabbed from a seller in Japan. Looking up at Jose's test, I believe he was the Devil this time that made me do it, I recall seeing these comparisons he did some years back.

Thank you Jose. It's obviously sharper judging by your examples. I think I'm going to have a hard time finding one.
Yeah, I like CA control and sharpness on this lens.
Another one you might like which has similar characters is the 400mm f5.6 nonIF. Supposedly rarer but I see it pops up on eBay more than the 300mm lately.

Now a question. I need to be educated about the 300mm lenses you all have been talking about.
You have peaked my interest and I feel a bit of GAS coming on.
Which version would you all consider the best out there including serial number range? Thanks!
Oh no Leighton - you're getting sucked in. Do you need an intervention? I'm pretty hopeless myself but I'll try. I'm getting better. I almost bought a 24mm f2 today, but I stopped myself. Nice misty dawn pic.
In honour of those who can focus at f1.2, here's my effort at f5.6 on the 18mm. In my defence, I was walking toward her and took the pic without stopping, I just pressed the shutter at hip height without looking. Still, I know, I know, it's way out.

Nah, just been thinking about something longer. My longest at the moment is135mm full frame equivalent.
You should have bought that 24/2! You could compete with Rafael.
It is a great image and well worthy of a large print.
Have you considered Whitewall? They are a German company. They have a 7x5 option (as well as custom sizes)
Example sizes here. https://www.whitewall.com/uk/photo-prints/fuji-crystal-archive-dp-ii
I use them regularly for prints as well as fully framed options. The quality is excellent, packaging superb, and customer service is top notch.
It is fun to upload a picture and try their configurator for framing options etc.

This one is rare? Had no idea. Has been in a cabinet for several years. I got it out to do some testing for use as a 600mm equivalent on the Z fc this past week.
Is this the same one?
George
ps. The 85mm/1.4 AiS covers the GFX sensor very well. No crop or vignette correction applied.
