Alas the cabin is booked pretty solid for the foreseeable future, even with the wet basement, but the bridge is open. It too has easy river access, just right for canoeing and kayaking.

bruni Well seen, it is a treat to see your take on the great theatrical set that is Rome!

I too was amazed at how perspective transformed that lighthouse. It is a rare lighthouse that has a 2 story building so close to afford a different view.

In my area, it would be very risky leaving that apple on the tree. The bears are much less fussy about ripeness!
We rarely get much of a crop from our trees and we have to constantly prune all the broken branches we get every year.

Less than 2 weeks ago - so yes. You have to be hardy though.
We hired a sea kayak and went for a paddle and swim on one of the sunny days.

Hi George, loving the idea of the Nikkors on the GFX. I admit I have lusted after MF for some time. Mind if I ask a few questions?

Effectively if you were to crop away the unused corners what percent of the sensor is used with the F lenses mounted?
What's the equivalent FL change?

Is there info on what the DR is on these cameras?

Thanks for sharing with us?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Not sure if I can address details to specific numbers to focal length, percentages and DR numbers. If I like what I see, I keep, if I don't I delete.

But... for the scope of the thread related to Nikkors... My experience has been with the exception of the 28mm PC lens with its large image circle (and probably the 35mm variant) you will have to go with at least 50mm or longer fast primes to get moderate coverage of the GFX50S sensor. The fast primes have a larger image circle than their slower counterparts and even then results can change based on what aperture you shoot too. Have not found any Nikkor zooms to be satisfactory on the GFX.

I have had good results with the 58 Noct, 85/1.4, 105/1.8, 135/2, 180/2.8, 200/2, 300/2.8. One of my favorite for its rendering is the 8.5cm/2 Nikkor rangefinder lens.

Anything wider than 50 (again with the exception of the PC lenses) you will get heavy and/or solid vignetting. But the camera does have a 35mm mode that crops the sensor and you have full coverage of any Nikkor lens focal length. Of course you can just crop in post too. So you sort of get two cameras in one

And YMMV regarding what you think is acceptable corners and the subject you are shooting. Landscapes you probably want native glass or other adapted medium format glass. I primarily shoot adapted manual focus A series Pentax 645 lenses. Super affordable and great performers. I also shoot large format Nikkor glass on a Cambo Actus GFX view camera using the GFX50S as a digital back.

Regarding equivalent focal length, I think the approximate factor is .79xFL. So a 50mm would be @ 40mm

Not sure how they all perform on the newer Fuji's.

I've been thinking about manual focus lenses for a bit now for the possible tactile feel of the focus ring. Do the focus rings have a weighty feel to them or do the rotate effortlessly? Are there any lenses that have a high amount of rotations (I guess a long throw?) from mfd to infinity to allow for really precise focusing with tiny adjustments? Looking at longer lenses like 85 or higher or possibly wides in the teens with 1.x apertures. Not looking for amazingly sharp options, wanting a character-full lens.

Some have weighty feel, some very light, depends on the condition. I've worked on a lot of MF Nikkors and I can usually make the focusing ring feel as smooth as Zeiss by using just the right amount of helicoid grease.

One of the most character-full lens I've used is the Nikkor-SC 55 1.2. Just beautiful rendering!

We have the occasional Black Bear come through, but they aren't very big and no way would they reach MY apple. I'm sure the bears in your neck of the woods are larger.

Makes me remember a funny story. One night we're sitting in the living room when I got a call from a neighbor. He said he just saw a bear and it was coming my way. We had sheep and cows in the field where the bear would be headed, so we ran out and got the animals in the barn.

The funny part is that my neighbor said, "don't worry, bears don't eat meat"!

MANY Thanks! Was looking at the new GFX 100Mp model, but I think I will simply trade in my Z7 and D500 and Xpro2 for a Z7II, think the Z9 is too much camera for me. Honestly,

I sooner they would make a D900 with IBIS and a crazy high performance sensor, 50MP is more than enough pixels. DF and D850 are still my fav cameras. I have all the Nikkor F glass I could ever want, so done there and need to sell off my M lenses, done with Leica. Droning is one of my new adds, so cool to shoot perspectives and angles at what ever height I want. Sensors are a bit mediocre though.

Wow, this really is labor intensive. I had no idea that the tiles were reused. If the tiles were still in good shape, how did you know to do the other work?

Leighton, there were some leaks around skylights for years, with damage to my bedroom walls; the nails holding the tiles in place had pulled out, tiles would slide creating gaps and leaks, forcing me to go up and slide them back in place periodically, the 'tar' cloth that is used on top of the plywood under the tiles was rotted and in pieces.

California houses are built cheaply, the cheap plywood under the tiles will rot or come unglued wherever water leaks in, much had to be replaced. My friends all had to do the same work, and it is normal practice to do it every 20 to 30 years. The tiles themselves will last 100 years and I used screws to hold them onto the new plywood. The structural timber was all in good shape, thank God.

Expensive yes, but this is the last time during my lifetime.

Rained almost all day today. Between showers I checked on the apples which are almost ready. Since I dismissed the 55mm f2.8 micro so quickly I thought I would give it another chance. It is just built too well to not perform. I cleaned both the front and rear element just in case.

Did you get rid of the Z7?

Martin - that's beautifully done.

Colin - thank you for letting me know, I fixed the Flickr link. No, I've still got the Z7, and the Sony A9, and the Fuji XT4 and XT30 (and a bunch of older cameras) you could say I have a problem in that department. The Canon has slowed me down a bit because the lenses are so expensive.
