I am no lens-change-expert, but I do do this one little thing which might be helpful. I'll have to look at the 35/2 Biogon as well. For some reason the price here in Sweden is excellent on a new one, but I'd written it off as presumably being too Zeiss-y. Will have a closer look at the results though.
If you want a bit of character wide open, it might be worth considering the 40/2 as well. It's a lens I would also like to try, but have been a fan of what I've seen posted with it. Can be a bit busy for bokeh character, but I don't mind that... The other bonus is for a Leica lens, it's quite inexpensive and the Minolta version is even more so.

That sounds pretty good If you ever want to try video with your Sony, I'd love to see you swap M lenses.
In the field I often take the new lens out of it's thin fabric sack, and set it on the sack which lays on a rock or something not to dirty , I remove the end cap, then reach in my left front pocket for the lens cap of the current lens. I cap and remove old lens and swap it for the new one, placing the old one back on the sack and mounting the new one, removing it's front cap and placing it in my left front pocket. Then I put the old one in the sack and in my other pocket, or where ever I want to carry it.

Funny you say that, I was reading up on the topic today and came across the 40 as well. I too liked it quite a bit, and once I saw it can be modified to work with the M8 35mm framelines (which are a little too generous for an actual 35mm lens) I was sold. So went to look around for one, and found a package with a 40, an Elmar-C 90 (which has also been on my short list), and a CL body for a very good price (much less than a used Summarit). I figure I'll sell the CL body and keep the lenses at which point it'll be a pretty sweet deal!
About 15 pages into the Puts PDF I linked and it's some damned interesting stuff. Just amazing all the parameters that have to be delicately balanced to produce a viable lens.
(Not that the Ultron 35 is a bad lens at all. But I do want to try some more proper Leica gear!)
Wow, sounds like a great buy. I should really look around for a 40 while they're still available at reasonable prices. Seems like I've missed a few good opportunities. I'm also curious about the Elmar-C and look forward to your observations about it. As you likely noticed, I recently acquired a 90AA and I think it pretty much sums up what I want in a 90 - sharp, transparent. The Summarit I have is good too, just that the AA is a bit better at wider apertures. But neither are compact, and when I'm out shooting typical walk around stuff with 90mm, it's usually stopped down anyway, so the thought of a 90/4 as been gaining traction with me. Always liking a bargain, I've been curious about the older Leica 90/4 variants, but have been doubtful that they'll quite live up to modern expectations. Hence thoughts about the 90/4 macro, but I'm really put off by its price, considering it would be a little used lens. Yes, there's also the CV90/3.5 that Charlie so ably demonstrates. Or the Zeiss 85/4, though I never really found it to be all that compact the few times I've tried it...

Lens changing... I'm typically out with a small, modified courier bag with internal pouches/pockets that each hold one lens. I keep each lens in the pocket with caps removed while in use. For some lenses with exposed rear elements, I'll cap them while in transit. But generally keeping them uncapped makes lens changing much faster/easier, though I can appreciate some will feel very uncomfortable keeping $$$$ lenses at the ready like this.
Since I'm left-handed, I prefer to keep the satchel on my left side and will use my left hand to fish out the lens I want while I simultaneously release and remove the lens on the camera with my right hand. With the lens off I'll mount the new lens and then move the previous lens to my left hand and back into the bag. If it takes me a bit of time to fish out the lens, I'll cover the open lens mount of the camera with my arm (assuming I'm clean/dry) or flip the camera around to press against my body to try to keep dust from blowing in... but that aspect is fairly futile in my experience so far with digital M cameras. If it's somewhere a bit dicey, like while standing in open water, I may remove the lens first, put it in the bag then transfer the new lens to the camera. If it's really windy, I'll position myself so the wind is blowing against my back, hopefully minimizing the amount of dust getting into the camera. As it is, having just recently had the sensor cleaned by Leica, within a week there were already a few specks with no sign of it letting up. At least these have been blowing off the sensor easily.

huh, you guys think about this a lot more than me. i just take the rear cap of the new lens and hold it in the same hand i use to take off the current lens so it's right there to go on when the other is off.

strap on my bag broke while i was hiking holding my daughter so i couldn't catch it (it broke 3 times previously when i wasn't carrying her and i caught it those times). fell about 5 feet onto sharp rocks with my nex-7 + rokkor 58/1.2, rx1, xd11 + rokkor 28/2, leica R 350/4.8, leica 40 cron, g28, and g45. the nex-7 was face up on the bottom center of the bag and i suspect it was the weight of the rokkor that killed it. nothing else was damaged at all.
still haven't dropped a lens from my hands, probably get a fair amount of dust on my sensor though.
edit: my sandwich got squished in the fall too and my daughters nalgene broke.

Sure, that works if you're switching a Lux 35 pre-A for a Jupiter 3, but not quite as well if you're switching the FD 85L for the FD 300L.

this is the leica m thread after all. i stick the big lenses (135mm or greater) under my armpit to hold them and then have one hand for the camera and one for the other lens.

Wow Gary, very nice! I'm glad to see I'd be able to get by with German. Budapest seems to have changed a fair amount since I was there in 1995... it seemed like areas were still struggling to emerge from behind the Iron Curtain. But things were pretty inexpensive. I wish I'd actually spent time wandering around the city during that visit (didn't due to specific obligations). How are prices there now?
