I briefly read through the new manual but couldn't get a feel for differences but from you educated Liecafilias what are the main differences between an M and an M-P?

Ron the latest beach shot close-up and personal with the grass is spectacular with the colours. Nice blur and bokeh, I tried the close focusing with the MM but just doesn't have the same impact to me with plants and vegetation in black and white. I will have to continue to experiment.

Nothing.. Frame line lever. And can take more shots. I'm still unsure about "upgrade" as they didn't specify. Like the look though.. That's for sure.

Also as Ron suggested, get a film M. You can't really go wrong with an M6 TTL. Would be tons of fun for the darkroom course.

Thanks Robert!

The main differences are:

- Increase to 2GB buffer, which Leica claims doubles its capacity to 24 frames.
- Return of the frame line preview lever.
- Sapphire LCD cover glass that is more scratch resistant.
- Cosmetic changes to the top plate, such as removal of the red dot, some text/scripting changes.
- Black model has black buttons and 4-way controller on the back.
- $7950 US

The M price increase is interesting too, because I don't recall Leica ever increasing the price of the M9. Maybe because it was in such demand through much of its product life?

Nice images guys.. Really nice. Ron congrats on the 90APO. It's nice (the wide open rendering, haha, sorry wasn't clear).. How do you find hitting focus, hard, easy?

My god, I never thought buying a camera would be so tedious. I know they are highly sought after on the used market, but today someone offered me a used one for more than a new one. Like way more! Over a thousand more. Jesus!

Wow, that's still happening? I don't know what the situation is like in the UK, but you should contact some of the Leica dealers and tell them you're looking for a camera... How much are used ones selling for? Maybe you can get a demo instead for about the same price?

Nice one Gary!

Thanks Adam.

So far, with the 90AA I'm getting mixed results. Focus seems to be spot on in the 2m and closer range, but is front focusing at farther distances. Focusing on something ~20-100m away results in noticeably closer focus when near wide open. Depth of field masks this somewhat in my usual stopped down landscape uses. At the moment I'm not all that bothered by it because closer working distances for people photos is where I'd mostly want to have proper RF calibration. For landscape stuff, if it's critical, I can use live view or the EVF. If this was the M9, I'd be more bothered by it. That said, it would be nice to have it perfect…

I brought it along to the wedding I did last weekend and used it a bit instead of my 85L. I normally never shoot longer than 50 on the Leica at weddings simply because of the ease of AF with telephoto lenses. I was surprised that I could fairly consistently nail focus doing portraits. Compared to the Summarit, it has a longer focus throw at near distances, which helps a lot. In this respect, I've been finding it easier to focus at typical people-picture distances.

It seems like a very good lens, particularly at farther distances. Feels very transparent. Colour balance seems to have more in common with the 21 & 50 Lux ASPH than the 28 Cron and Summarit, both of which I find have a magenta tint.

Just for fun, at the wedding I shot this with both the 90AA and the 85L at f/1.2, to see what the difference might be. I backed up slightly for the 90 to get the same framing, but it is slightly off..

Interesting to see how much more 'cats eye' the 85L goes. 90AA shows some onion ring in the blur disks and odd edge blur of some of those disks too..

Wow, Ron, that's an exquisite photo. I much prefer the 90AA rendering. The onion rings are very typical for aspherical elements. Many if not most Leica lenses are aspherical so this must be a normal occurrence. The truncated blur disks are ugly imho. By the way, before adjustment, my 85 Sonnar was accurate at infinity but back focusing at portrait distance. After adjustment, now it's accurate up close but front focusing at a distance. Both Zeiss and the local technician said it's going to be very difficult if not impossible to get both so I'm quite happy with the current calibration. By the way, when shooting far away, I focus at the farthest point in the frame, and I find this works well.

Richard, it shouldn't be that difficult to get a M240. I see them for sale all the time and from reliable people. You will need to join a few Facebook Leica pages like I do, and you'll get plenty of information.

Beautiful shots folks, really impressed.

That is a bummer that product scalping may still be going on… sort of hard to dispute supply and demand but still its disheartening to hear since there are are dealers around doing makes-sense deals on used gear.

rscheffler- congrats on the 90.. gorgeous lens and yes also not without its quirks. I too find focus at 90 with the M is more challenging than with the shorter focal lengths, mostly due however (for me) to the image being focused is the same size in the finder as with the shorter focal lengths. I haven't found the eyepiece magnifiers of much assistance, in that the focus patches are much lighter and it can be even more difficult to focus in certain lighting conditions.

I have been spoiled however since a year and a half ago when I replaced a couple of my 1.4's with a Noctilux ASPH. Talk about difficulty focusing, but when you hit it, it is amazing in both technical and emotional. Couple shots from this year posted below - Taipei Taiwan with Taipei 101, and the Vietnam War Memorial in WA DC. Both with M240.

Some criticize the Noctilux as being too ambitious, heavy and expensive. Heavy and expensive, yes; but the ambition has produced a challenge which has been paying off like I didn't expect. Practice has brought some reliability to the thin DOF focus.

Haven't noticed the Onion bokeh on my 50APO at all.. To be fair, it's not really something I've noticed on the 90APO and 75APO though... So maybe I'm just not an observant person?!

Could be the cam-shaft (think thats what it's called). Sometimes it warps out of shape and that causes inconsistencies in focusing. HOWEVER, I've noticed that all my lenses do this to some degree or another. I personally think of the time it's the limitations of AF/RF/Lens design. I've yet to see a lens that doesn't do this with AF or RF cameras (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Hassy). Not as much with Sony A99/A7 though.. Maybe something Zeiss/Sony got right somehow?

About the cam-shaft.. The 75APO is notorious for that. Talked to a Leica repair guy, told me that's the most common problem with the 75APO. Although Leica never replaces the part for me, they always just "calibrate". And it's always wrong somehow.

Noticed that the 90APO is much more difficult to focus then the 90summarit, and any other Leica lens. I find the Noctilux easier to focus wide open. The 50Lux is worse, but only when you recompose. To be fair, I tend to use the 90APO further away then say the 75APO. I find I use the 75 mostly for close-up shots, details, tight crops. The 90 is like a candid lens. The 75 a detail lens.. Thats why I'm not to concern about the 75APO being inconsistent at further distances. All that said, I guess it's unfair to the 90APO, as it has a much harder job, but still..

Depends on where you live I suppose. Here Leica still charges about $11,000 for cameras, which is roughly $8,800 USD. Which is $1800 more then USA retail. Since Leica warranty is international, there's really no point in paying a premium if you have access to the USA or EU market (although in the EU you pay VAT which sucks).

I guess it's best to travel and buy. Or buy new from a HK ebay seller (quite a few reputable ones). Usually they find a way to get you out of paying VAT. I never pay taxes when I import things from HK. Maybe EU is a bit more strict though.

BTW, if you're buying new, get an M240P looks cooler!

Onion rings in the blur disks are always an indication of an aspherical element. However, the onion rings are not always obvious depending on the position of the aspherical element in the lens design, and also how well it is polished.

Thanks for the tips' I will try hounding a few Leica stores and see what they say. On the upside, maybe a few people will be trading in now this P model is released! For what it's worth, they seem around £3200-£3400 on the used market in the UK. That is saving me around £1500 on a new model, which I would rather used in a couple of trips (I rarely by new).

RF and phase detect AF both require perfect calibration (which of course can fall out with time) and incredibly high tolerances to get perfect focus throughout the range. contrast detect AF (which the sonys use - a99 uses both types of AF) only requires a good algorithm (still working on the speed aspect here) for perfect accuracy through the range since focus is done by the same sensor that takes the picture. this allows sony to save money by loosening certain tolerances too.

Welcome wizardwig. Very nice Noct shots. Glad to see you are enjoying that beauty. I wish I had one I love the narrow DOF. I relate to the challenges of the narrow DOF when you nail the focus to what you want it is amazing. I have the Canon 1.0L not in the same league as the Noct but if one knows where the strengths are you can get some amazing shots. One day I hope to have a Noct.

Ron I agree the 90 has a better look especially vs the cat eyes. Very lovely shot. I symphasize on the frustration of the 90 it has been most challenging for me of my 3 M lenses I am thinking of getting the 1.4X magnifier to improve focusing since the MM has no live view. Though I have found I am doing better now that I am using it a little more often.

Ironically since getting the Monochrom I have found my focusing through the viewfinder on my DSLRs is much better and I am relying less on using Live View on the DSLR's for obtaining focus. Never thought that getting a rangefinder would have generated that side benefit.

Funny, I was using my DSLR today, and had the above mentioned problem happen to me again (this time with the 85L and it was at f/4. BTW perfect at min distance, horrid at medium distances. So I thought, what the heck I'll just MF, and it was a lot easier then I remember). So I think RF has conditioned my eye as well over the years.
