The point is that depending on the specific optical formula of a lens, the filter may affect the lens performance negatively, like with the planar, but surprisingly, positively like with the biogon.

I've never heard of this relating to optical formulas. My primitive understanding was cheap filter = waste of quality optics. I've long stopped using any filters at all. But then this is for my SLR's that go to 1/8000th and down to ISO100, so I rarely clip that, even at 1.4. If in very bright light I'm happy to just stop down a touch, which is usually needed anyway, rather than shooting at 1.4.

The CV 35/1.4 I ordered comes with a good quality B&W ND filter. Maybe this will be handy with the 1/4000th & ISO200 limit, but we shall see...

, Nothing to brag about but I can only get the feeling until I use them. A7's buy is at special stage that right before my China trip, which turn out is a right decision. But after extensive use, I have to say I prefer OVF most of time minus shooting in dark : I don't like shutter and EVF lag, I don't enjoy use SLR lens on it, big mis-balance with focusing lag, I don't really enjoy M lens on it as well, as M body make much more sense to do MF to me, not to mention WA does't really work. Manual system is horrible to me, switch between EVF and LCD has to go deep, LCD brightness has to go deep in manual etc...Processor is under powered for zoom focus and reviewing etc... and their raw file is compressed. it has many plus of course, especially I missed 55FE, but I have to say it doesn't change my general complain about it, which I state many times.

As for D810, it almost flawless to me adding tilt LCD and remove flash might be only two. Weight and size could be minus or plus depend on cases...I need a new focus screen though. For pure IQ, I don't see anything better yet And AF is very impressive that is what I call tool, pure working.

A image from D810 from recent

As for Leica M, it will always have position in my kit. The images are different I got from it, the way I use it help a lot about certain images. It is a artistic brush to me

Lovely work everyone, as always!

Ron, I think the main attraction of the Nikon D810 is that it is a true AA less camera with a corresponding ultra thin sensor cover, unlike the D800E, which has basically a self neutralizing AA filter, or the A7R which has no AA filter but has the thickest and most useless sensor cover ever used. I expect the D810 to show the true performance of ZF glass as well as the latest excellent native glass.

I would like also to share with you guys something curious I discovered recently, but unfortunately without supporting photos.

Edward, well said about D810, though I don't think there is major difference in IQ between D800E and D810, even in sharpness, but all about user feeling. I love ISO64 and ISO31 extended. (don't know why 31 show up in my EXIF) The subtle improvement here and there really make it a better tool to me than D800E 2 year ago. and I love its shutter sound

As for filter, I have found the same thing(less flare) on my Summicron Rigid and 35mm V1 with my black BW IR filter, I feel the flare was from their chrome filter ring. I never really invest time to do scientific test though.

Good point about the chrome filter ring, Zhangyue. It might be the reason since all ZM lenses have a chrome ring, which becomes invisible once a black frame filter is screwed in.

As for the D810, I was very tempted to get one with a couple of ZF lenses, but finally decided DSLR are too heavy for me to carry around

Richard, many lenses are designed with a front uv filter included in the optical calculations. Some others that take internal filters the same is done, so that if you don't use a filter, you need to still insert a clear filter in the filter slot in order not to lose any performance.

The flat filter in front of the sensor affects the image in the same way as a filter in front of the lens, just much more. Filters behind the lens affect the image IQ dramatically, while those in front have a much milder effect. I have seen myself uv filters cause some mild field curvature in the corners with wide angles, as well as some CA and other aberrations. The filter also affects infinity focus, causing it to be off by a few centimeters, which is of course negligible, but can be mathematically calculated.

That's interesting, thanks Edward! I remember from my 'big glass' days the slip in rear filters and such recommendations, but hadn't came across these other ones before.

So, I have a 50 question. Still no camera by the way... One appeared in the UK today (used) but it was silver, and is really like the black. Anyway, if you were to add a 50, if you're otherwise someone who happily shoots at 35 all day long, so probably for occasional closer portraits if anything... Would you go with 50/1.5 VM or 50/1.1 Sonnetar (MS-Opticals)? This is alongside the 'classic' 35/1.4 CV. I assumed the 50/1.5 would match perfectly. But discovered the 50/1.1, which is actually somehow lighter, seems like an interesting item. Or would that just be a silly speed greed decision? Just interested if anyone had a thought. Don't really need a 50 but neither seem to break the bank, might be a useful option.

Richard, I think Zeiss sonnar f1.5 is best matching for VC35, watch for Focus shift though. compensation is possible. I like it almost as ASPH lux leica. I don't like the style of VC501.5 new, though some people say it is beautiful. I feel is over the top look draw extra attention. VC501.1 also has focus shift, and somehow I never really like it due to size. It is decent sharp WO though. Maybe the only thing it lacks is a red dot.

Zeiss planar 50 is great performer, but It is hard to not consider Leica Summicron for 50mm focal, especially Rigid and last two version of non-APO, they are small and build like a gem. performance is great over all aperture. Nothing beat the feeling focusing with Leica glass. 50 sumarit at f2.5 also very small and not to mention SUMMITAR 50mm f2 and Elmar f2.8 all of them will be excellent for BW or even color shooting, rendering is just beautiful and special to me and will suit your style of shooting well.

All recommendation is reasonable priced for 'Leica'.

Interesting points and observations, Edward and thanks for the clarification Michael.

Richard - The CV 50/1.5 is going to be a more 'normally behaved' 50 than the Sonnetar, from which I've only seen images on Flickr, etc., and have briefly discussed with others. I think the Sonnetar is more of an auxiliary lens for when you want its kind of character. My impression is it will offer a more lively/busy Sonnar-like bokeh quality and may not have the sheer optical capabilities of a slower lens. It will probably also suffer from focus shift due to uncorrected SA, a problem with all 'classic' Sonnar 50s. That said, it's a lens I've also been interested in trying...

I have the previous LTM version of the CV lens. It's supposedly the same optical design, but the new one has better coatings. My experience is that it's quite a sharp lens, even wide open, and more so centrally at wider apertures. Its bokeh quality is fairly relaxed and not that far off from the very smooth 50 Lux ASPH. It would be the much safer lens choice for all-round use. My complaint about it includes purple fringing around high contrast transitions at wider apertures, which seems to be the bane of many fast lenses on digital, though the fast CV lenses I've used seem to be somewhat more prone to this.

It's a really good lens, without doubt, and as with many from CV, offers very compelling performance for its price. You're not going to find any other currently produced fast 50 that competes against it, in this respect (the Zeiss C-Sonnar is not as sharp, but has more distinctive bokeh/character - and I agree with Michael that it's probably closer to the CV35/1.4). That said, if you're after a bit more character, there are vintage 50s available in the ~$400 range, give or take, such as the Canon 50/1.4, the Zeiss-Opton Sonnar 50/1.5, Canon 50/1.5 and Nikkor 5cm/1.4. The last three are all Sonnar designs and will have somewhat more lively bokeh quality, with the Nikkor being the craziest of the bunch. The Canon 50/1.4 is actually very competitive with modern 50s. Wide open it does lose contrast and exhibits some smearing/SA, but with a 60s analog feel to it. Stopped down and it's very sharp. There's also the more dreamy 50/1.2 version in the $600-700 range.

So, just received Leica's estimate to fix my wobbly 50 Lux ASPH: $390. I guess that's about the ballpark I was expecting...

Wow - great pics in the last few days...

Bruno - nice set of pictures and congrats on the MM!
Michael - really enjoying your train station set.
Beetlephoto - I really like that pic. Would be nice to have just a tiny bit more DOF though....
Edward - these recent pictures you posted look so good. As always, colors are really nice and natural.
Charlie - yes, those pine beetles are pesky and have wreaked havoc here as well.
Joakim - nice selfie!
Allen - your work is always so good. All are great but #2 and 6 stand out for me...
Robert - great to see your images from the MM.
Ricardo - yes, the 1/8000 is great on the M8. It is one of the few things I miss about it....
Ron - It was so great to finally meet up with you. Next time I am out there we need to do a little photo walk. PS - did you notice your 21lux is missing from your camera bag? Nice pics you have posted. That is quite a bit to fix your 50lux - I would be tempted to call them and negotiate.

Thank you Gary! Lovely set, both indoors and outdoors. I think the outdoor shots may even look better in b/w.

Ron, sorry to hear about your wobbly lux. When I bought my used Sonnar 85, it was wobbling, and Zeiss fixed it for 95 euros + freight (66 euros).

Regarding the C-Sonnar 50, I think it is very sharp, but very few people realize that because it is designed to front focus wide open by about 2 inches. Once you learn to focus on the ears instead of the eyes, you will see it is equally as sharp as the best lenses in this category. But as far as I'm concerned, this lens can be used only in LV. Focusing and correcting with the range finder is too much hit and miss.

It's the silver lens. It's about what I expected, based on what Leica AG charged the last time it was serviced. It's not just a slight wobble, rather the whole lens feels loose and it's soft wide open unless you push the lens back against the lens mount. Plus the hood fell off and there are likely a couple parts missing that I wasn't able to fish out of the gravel at the side of the road when I tried to recover all the parts...

You had some trouble with your Lux ASPH too... was the repair cost much less? Mine is also well out of warranty...

Gary, one and three are stand out
Gordan, Nice color and I seldom see 135 APO images here, more please.
Edward, another yes! If it is true, it means they will have to figure out a bunch of ergonomics thing to adjust ISO, WB, EC etc....It will be really interesting addition. We Leica user need niche, bring it in.
Ron, Beautiful set! How could you let all those thing happen to your $4000 lens , I think I paid about $100 to have them replaced aperture ring and hood and adjust the lens, Very reasonable I guess, though I am the original owner. So, $390 sound shock to me.

Glad to see people are being active . I've been somewhat uninspired lately so it's always nice to see the wide range of images posted here. Michael you must've really struck a deal getting a repair quote of 100 from leica , my 35 lux costs almost 1000 to repair and I've read on luf a guy is being charged 900 pounds yikes.

A camera like that would be very cool and probably beautiful as well but I don't think I would buy one. I enjoy shooting my film Leica MP and can certainly get by without looking at a histogram after each shot but I still feel that when I shot digital I want to take advantage of what the technology offers and have a LCD and a histogram etc. Sure if money was no problem I would get one and use beside my M9 but then again if money was no problem I would also get a normal M 240 and a M Monochrom and a 50/.95 Noctilux
