Hmm, too bad about the speed. From the specs the M9 LCD has the same number of pixels as the X1 LCD (230k) but is slightly smaller (2.5" vs 2.7"). That means that the pixel density is somewhat better on the M9 and that it should look a bit better. (You can perhaps imagine now how crappy the X1 is to use when its LCD is the primary interface for using the camera...)
Thanks Joe. I'm from the school of you won't know if you like it if you don't try it. I can't and won't keep them all but I want to see what I like best at least. Haven't tried the Summitar. I've got an Elmar 50/3.5 that should get here tomorrow which will be a real departure from the fast glass I usually go for. I've seen some really good images with them though and this one's worth a try.
Wow, I go to sleep and wake and couple of pages to catch up! Fascinating discussion Great input and information. Sean Reid reviews are excellent and are very balanced as he is a very experienced using RF's.
Luka, excellent shots as usual!
Joe, great shots! Love the depth of the colours and rendering This is very unique to 35 cron.
Rod, excellent shots Luka will love the duck theme I really like this Nikkor 85/2 lens. Too many options!!!
Where do I start! Luka, the ZM 35/2 is really a lens you have to try out, if you are looking at the examples on Steve Huff's site. I purchased the ZM 35/2 based on this review. In reality compared to the ZM 25/2.8 on the M9, the ZM 35/2 is not the Zeiss, I would expect. Some of my first posts, were with the ZM 35/2, and really they were so lacking IMO. The ZM 25/2.8 is just an extraordinary lens, with mind blowing details and colours. My analogy would be comparing the ZE 21/2.8 to the ZE 28/2.0. As much as I love Zeiss, this is not the pick. The 35 Summicron Asph is so much more, in sharpness and in beautiful rendering. Maybe my copy was not true to form?
With respect the 90 Summicron AA or Elmarit, these lenses are sublime. Contrary to reviews, I have absolutely no problems focusing the 90mm lens. Both my lenses have been calibrated by Camera clinic, taking a few days, and are in sync with the calibrated M9. Basically minimal cost, but I really think, this is the root of a lot of the issues. When I speak to manager, he calibrates the lenses to my intended application. Mind you, this would be the limit of the longest FL. The 90mm is one my favourites, particularly of portraits and the Summicron APO is just amazing. It is very different than the ZE 100MP is which it leans towards, sharpness and rendering in lanscapes, the 90 AA lens beautifully render portraits. With Zeiss the ZM 85/2 is probably one of the best lenses available, but it is price in line with the 90 Summicron AA.
Carsten and Joe suggestion and discussion for lens selection is excellent.
My personal selection would be:
ZM 25/2.8, just that you can use this lens without a viewfinder if you wish.
35 or 50 Summilux Asph
90 Summilux or maybe the Elmarit.
Denoir, I think you should sit tight, 2 more months at least. I am still fumbling around in sharpening trying to get anywhere near your sharpness. Additionally I am so sick of seeing the jaggies when I resize but can't seem to find a solution that doesn't require quite a bit of time. I personally find your work to be awesome (traditional meaning not stupid over usage) and I am not one for landscapes usually. I think the results you share with the x1 are way ahead of most of those I see from others with the m9 (other forums are my main source, well flickr too).
I really should get more involved here especially in the post processing forums. I am growing so weary of many of the luf users' arrogance, lack of manners, and anachronistic immaturity. The images in this thread and the constructive nature easily replace nearly the entire forum at luf IMO.
Zombii - that 75 lux has a beautiful signature to me..what a lens! I really wish the x1 was at least a 2.0 and similar to denoir I have been growing increasingly frustrated with it. I shot some casual shots of my gf doing a tv promo for her animal shelter and came away with literally 2 keepers from 20 shots..half were lost due to sluggish performance, the rest due to my inexperience with zone focusing/being forced to zone focus indoors (high iso).
I'll hold on until the update..but if there isn't a substantial improvement, I'll be selling the x1 on. While I could buy an m9, it would be the wrong decision financially for someone of my limited experience.
Thanks h00ligan. I bought it from Cindy Flood on getDPI. She really hated to let go of it but sold it to buy an M9. She felt like it was one of the best lenses she'd ever owned. I haven't used it enough yet to say that but it's capable of being very sharp stopped down and only a little less so wide open. I haven't done any good people shots with it yet though and that's what I'm looking forward to.
Now I know who to look for if I need help with RF adjustment
Haven't tried it Joe. I haven't gone through all the 50's yet which is first priority. That does seem kind of high but I don't know much about them. Glass looks nice.
