Joakim, KL and Luka, thank you
Ryan, very nice set! I really like the rendering of #2 with 90 Elmarit
KL, great set of shots! Fantastic shots with the ZM 21. Almost look surreal Love #1 with the 90 Cron AA
Luka, excellent shots! Got to love the 90 Cron AA Love #3 and 4 in the second set.
KL - great set, but that last shot with the ducks is awesome! The colors are fantastic
Luka - great set, #3 is excellent! The 90 AA reminds me of the ZF 100. How do you compare the two? You guys are killing me with these shots....this lens looks awesome. I told myself moving from the ZF lenses I wanted a ZF 21 replacement and ZF 100 replacement on the Leica. I know the 21 isn't quite there yet, but this 90 AA looks like the lens I really wanted. How is the size? Is it too big? Does it make the camera feel front heavy?
As far as the 21, I am really hoping Leica introduces a 21 Elmar of the same optics as the 24. That would be my last length I want.
Joe - I really like it! The ZI is a great camera. I packed my Ikon in the car today but I forgot the film . We are in the process of buying a new house so I came home to find it all packed . May be a few weeks before I can shoot it again unless I pay double B&H prices locally. Im not a fan of the Ilford FP4 I tried but the Tri-X looked great
Ryan, as difficult as it may be to believe, the 90 AA generally compares favorably to the 100 MP. In terms of resolution and micro contrast it's better at all apertures and consistently across the frame. The MP has a much smaller MFD which allows for various creative options - especially as it can produce really special painterly bokeh. The 90 AA on the other hand produces better OOF rendering at a bit of a distance as it has less tendency to produce LoCA that creates 'busy' bokeh. The bottom line is that it's definitely a worthy substitute for the 100 MP.
As for size. Is it too big? Sure. Does it make the camera feel front heavy? Absolutely.
Here's a size comparison to a lens you are familiar with - the 28 Cron:
and this is what it looks like mounted on the camera:
So it isn't exactly small. But if you want 90mm and f/2 there's little choice.
As for 21 mm, unfortunately there's no equivalent to the 21 Distagon ZE/ZF. The ZM 18/4 & ZM 25/2.8 stopped down a bit is the closest you'll get - but then the focal lengths are off. The Leica 21mm lenses are nice but completely different, so they are no substitute either.
Luka--nice pics of the lenses!
Just to add - I believe in addition to what you pointed out, at infinity the 90 APO really shines compared to the Zeiss.
That first picture of the lenses has great bokeh--what did u take it with?
Thanks for that Luka, doesn't look too bad size wise. I was secretly hoping you were going to tell me that it can't compete with the ZF 100....I may have to start saving my pennies for a new lens . I like the Elmarit-M and the size is wonderful as it is so small....but the lens isn't as smooth in the oof as the 90 Cron AA and the rendering of the 90 Cron AA looks more preferred
