Thanks Ryan

You mean in what situations it has CA problems or in what situations I prefer the drawing style? The former is obviously much easier to show. As for the latter, I've noticed that the 90 AA produces a somewhat harsher and edgier bokeh. It also seems to me that the V3 cron produces higher local contrast - that the rendering is not all that different stopped down from what you get from the Zeiss 100 MP, while I have not been getting that impression from the 90 AA.

Have you sold your 5DII kit yet? There is your answer

No, but:
1) I'm not nearly the Leica aficionado that you are. You seem to be a great fan of Leica lenses yet in the end you are using Nikon & Zeiss. I on the other hand have a stronger Zeiss bias.

2) You sell stuff you don't use for the most part, I generally don't. Apart from the 5DII I also have a 7D and a 350D and such crimes against humanity as the Sigma 18-200 OS. So what I have is definitely not optimized for what I'm using. Today if I had to choose one system with one set of lenses it would be the M9.

The M8 is not full frame, which is my main beef with it at this point, as it bothers me somewhat that my 28, 50 and 90 are not good focal lengths with a 1.33x crop factor. The 35 is okay, and I use it by far the most, and I do enjoy the M8's IQ and rendering, and had fun today making the few 90AA test shots, but it isn't the same.

Well, yes, that's part of my point. You have these great lenses and a camera that can really make full use of them. Me keeping some old crappy lenses and cameras that I don't use is really nothing to keeping a couple of world class lenses and not using them.

I am still not 100% sold on dishing out over 5000 Euro for a camera I find a little out-dated and a little flawed, so I am still fence-sitting for now. Besides, if I switch back (or start using both equally), I would need to come up with even more money to fix my wide angle hole, and I don't have that money right now. I think I could get along with 28/50/90 most of the time, but the 35 is just too good to sell, and I would need a 21/24 at least sometimes. I am currently wondering if I

I think you were making the point a bunch of pages back that Leica is unlikely to ship an M10 any time soon. A simple cost neutral solution would be to sell the M8 & the 28/2 and get the M9. Use it for handheld shots and the Nikon when you need tripod action, tele or UWA. You can get wider lenses for the Leica later, or even better, sell that 200 VR which frankly is the really odd lens out in your collection and get something wider in M-mount.

joakim: I think Cory Silken uses one of the 24s.

For me, I decided to go with a 21 because coming from the APS-H sensor on the Canon 1D series and frequently using the 16-35 at the 16mm end, the 21 gave me equivalent framing to what I was already used to accomplishing on the Canon system. I don't miss the gap much between 21 and 35.

I too am curious about the wide Lux lenses and was initially more interested in the 24, but I think I would probably lean towards the 21 and crop it when needed, since I find when I need wide, I need w i d e

The latter. It is true that the 90 Cron v3 pulls alongside the 90AA when stopped down, but I tend to use my lenses more wide open than that, not normally doing much landscape photography with deep depth of field. But post away, and I will try to match.

You also don't really use your 5DII and Zeiss glass at the moment, which is what I meant. I don't care about your 350D, 7D or other crop-crap

I think you were making the point a bunch of pages back that Leica is unlikely to ship an M10 any time soon. A simple cost neutral solution would be to sell the M8 & the 28/2 and get the M9. I would not sell the 28/2 until I was certain that the 24 Elmarit/Lux would replace it, and then I would do it in the same transaction. As much as I like my other lenses, my copy of the 28 Cron operates *perfectly*, with just the right amount of focus ring resistance, and just the right amount of aperture ring heaviness and the detents are perfect. It is a little jewel, and I would have to commit ritual seppuku if I sold it and decided to buy one back later which was less perfect. My other lenses are all slightly less perfect. The 35 Lux ASPH aperture ring has a slightly loose feel, although that might be the brass. The 50 Lux ASPH has a slightly tight focus ring, and my 90AA has a fairly loose aperture ring. All are well within reasonable operating parameters, but the 28 Cron is just perfect.

I think about the 200/2 VR. On the one hand it is a dream lens, and I have loved using it and had so much fun with it. It makes great portraits, is zip-zip-lightning fast and accurate, has great sharpness and boke, and getting a great deal from a guy I know and trust was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I would like to keep it. On the other hand, I obviously don't bring it as much as my other lenses...

I could also sell something else. I have a Manfrotto 405, Acratech Leveling Base, Manfrotto 055C tripod, Leitz 50 Dual-Range Cron, CV15 I, Hasselblad 2000FC/M, and various more or less expensive accessories, all just standing around waiting to be eBayed, but it takes time, carries a fair amount of stress with it, and is generally a pain in the ass, so I keep delaying it. Selling all of this and my M8 might be enough for an M9. Still, where is my chrome finish? Leica has failed me. I will fence-sit a while longer and see if the M10 doesn't come along in chrome, with high-res monitor, an improved IR filter (which I am highly sensitive to, just like my M8), a faster processor, ...

I think a lot of people want the extra stop of the 28 Cron, and so they skip the 24/2.8. On the other hand, if you are going to pay 5K for a wide angle Lux, many people skip the 24 and go for the 21, which is unique in the world in its specification. I think both of those might be mistakes, but I have only very brief experience with the 24 Elmarit, so I am not sure. I have zero experience with 21 or 24 Lux.

I know both the 21/2.8 and the 24's are awesome lenses - but I certainly wouldn't call the 21/lux a mistake
Carsten - thanks for the review on the 90 by the way.

The big problem with the 21/lux is the tendency to always shoot wide open for no apparent reason!

Here's a shot I took yesterday with the 90 Summarit. I did a slight crop for composition but, after seeing Carsten's images with the Cron, it's making me want to buy one! I'm amazed at how much I can push the M9 files. Incredible!

Btw, I just received the 1.4X magnifier yesterday and it's totally worth it!

Joe, Luka and Julian, thanks guys

Carsten, great stuff. Thanks for the insight and review!!! Congrats on passing 5000 I love the 90 Cron AA, but the Cron V3 is brilliant too. I don't there is a bad lens in the Leica lineup, they are just different different

KL, very nice shots! Interesting to compare the 50 Cron Ltd looks very similar in rendering to the Lux in #4.

Ryan, good luck in anticipation for the new model and type !!

Joe, excellent shot! Love the separation of the runner from the background

Luka, great shots! Love the composition, form and amazing colours!!! You work magic with your 90 Cron V3

Uzay, good luck in your M9 system decision making. Great advice , but I would suggest may be try the M9 with only one or two lenses to begin with and see how you feel about using the RF system. I know with the DSLR, I used a lot of different lenses, but with the M9, I keep with only one, maybe two lenses when I'm out, so it is a different style and thinking of taking shots.

Joakim, I think the reason the 28 Cron is more popular, is that the frame lines fit with out an external finder, relatively fast and compact, with beautiful rendering. It makes for a great landscape, street shoot or event lens, as it is still fast, enough WA without too much distortion. It works well with a flash, setting the lens at f/5.6 or 8, and you have a P&S for functions and quick shots. There is a huge gap in the angle of view between the 21 and 24, and my choice would be a 21 for the very different perspective. I feel the 24 would be too close to the 28 IMO.

Lovinglife, nice shot!

Julian, very nice portrait shot!

LL: Please allow me to offer my English/German interpretation skills. I believe Carsten meant that his analysis of why 24mm appears to be less popular here might be mistaken, not that buying one of the wide Luxes would be a mistake.

Julian: The Summarit looks very nice. I guess you'll have to shoot more variety to compare against the 90AA samples, but is there really a significant different for half a stop and more than 2x the price? Maybe for some. More feedback on the use of the 1.4x magnifier would be nice. IIRC Charles is not a big fan of it, but it would be good to get another take on it.

Ryan, nice nighttime set! It would seem #2 would be a prime candidate for a double capture and blend in PS to preserve a bit of the illuminated sign. But as it stands, it has a nice glowing feel to it.

Luka, great set! I mentioned that already in an edited comment above, but you might have missed it.

Joe, love the feel of that 90 Elmarit image. Blurred background, but not too blurred, yet still great separation. Also the previous page of the race, particularly the soldiers.

KL - great images of daily life!

Carsten - thanks for the 90AA write up and samples!

Charles, back a page or so, I don't believe I mentioned I think the B&W image of the woman on the rocks has great atmosphere. Same with the colour image of the guy fishing on those rocks.

It would be interesting to see the two differently PP'd images side by side. I have the feeling that this one has a bit more snap to it. A bit sharper feeling in the plane of focus. Did the the skin colour print well? My feeling is it's quite yellow, though I realize some Asian skin tones can be.

Or it's just my own bias, as i find I desaturate yellows/oranges in M9 files quite often.

One from Lausanne - M9 & ZM35C

Lovely colours on that pic Ron.
You asked a while back about photographing kids here in Singapore - i think that asking the parents first is still a good idea as it could still be misconstrued. It helps that i am usually with my 4 year old and they can see i am no perv, just a hobbyist dad with an awesomely oldlooking camera.

The desaturation point you mentioned is also discusssed here in Thorstens' great article (love to read his articles) http://www.overgaard.dk/leica-M9-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-12.html - he mentions "In adjusting color photos I desaturate red 8-10% and desaturate orange 10-30%, increase contrast and lightness and compensate for that decreasing exposure."

cheers

^^Thanks Ron. Thanks for your perspective on the 90 Cron vs. the 90 Summarit. I guess half a stop isn't that big of a deal. I just have to bump the ISO a bit. I was having a hard time nailing focus without the magnifier but, I guess everyone's experience with it is different. I'll have to shoot with it more outside when I have time. Btw, nice underground shot.

Julian, thanks
Ron, thank you Very nice shot!
The skin tones did print out well on Museo, Silver Rag paper, and was typical of the lighting under cover. I had the printer ICC profiled, and does have a more muted appearance being printed now, rather than on screen. Also the file, is a direct soft proof, so the there may be some marginal hue compensation for the paper.
