Luka - awesome awesome shots!
Lovinglife - around these parts, sending pics like those (that fuel GAS) is called sending " poison". V nice that lux is!
Joe - great marathon shots!
Joe and Julian - tsk tsk... Can't you see I am busy at (photographic )work? These are shots of the bookends of the day, so early early or late late. Some are when i m on leave running errands. The m9 gear is so compact that I have it with me 99% of the time. Have a busy schedule once the day starts.

Cheers

Kl (one leave today...gonna take some pics hopefully)

Okay, here is a mini-review of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH, since apart from Charles' great portraits, there are almost no images here, and I was asked in a PM for my opinion. Unfortunately, I have no M9, and no access to one, so these photos were made with the slightly too long and uncomfortable Leica M8 angle of view of a 120mm lens. IMO, the main characteristics which make me like this lens so much still come through, but I expect that it would gain a lot in character and would not lose a lot in performance on full frame.

I see a lot of people here who really enjoy the 90 Cron, and IMO this lens has nearly all the charm of the older lens, while adding a lot of modern performance, adding up to a total which is significantly better than the older lens in many cases. In some sense, I see this lens as opposed to the 75 Cron, which for my taste is too sterile and finicky, and is more to be compared to the 50 Lux ASPH, with its awe-inspiring all-capable performance. The APO 90 Cron is a very solid performer, very, very sharp, and is also very tolerant to bad backgrounds, while giving a beautiful, almost Mandler-esque glow to the boke in many cases. The in-focus plane is sharp with no glow. The lens is slightly large and heavy for a Leica M lens, and it can be tough to focus at certain distances, perhaps 25-75m or so, but it is very worth it. I have not seen any 3D from it, but on FF it is possible that it would give a little. Like all Leica APO lenses, it is very resistant to purple fringing, but not immune. It is much better than the 100 MP, for example, in this area.

I tried to make nice photos, but given that I am at home with a cold, the most I could do is to walk around my neighbourhood and try to pick out interesting stuff, so the real art content is very low here. I will present 12 shots and make commentary along the way as to what I am trying to show.

The following shots are all wide open, except the second branches shot, which is at f/8. Apart from whatever Apple Aperture chooses to add, these are all completely unprocessed, no sharpening, no white balance, nothing. If someone is interested, I could try to pull out some more sharpness from any specific shot, and to do full processing.

First of all, close up performance. The minimum distance is 1m, so you really can't get very close. It is fine for a tabletop still life, but is no substitute for a macro lens. In the first shot, you can see both the sharpness and the pleasing boke. In the second shot, I blew the exposure a bit, but you can see that it handles a messy background well (more of the same flowers and branches, really not far behind).

Let's take a look at some more background boke, this time at medium distances:

f/8:

Very messy:

Finally, some large distance sharpness and boke:

I hope this is helpful to anyone wanting to evaluate this lens. Within reasonable limits, I am willing to make specific types of shots to give more insight, but keep in mind that I only have an M8.

Thanks Ryan & KL

Lovingfile, nice set with the 21Lux!
Ryan, the first two from this last set is my favorite. Nice night shots!
Charles, I'm continually impressed with your color pp. Beautiful shot!
Carsten, nice mini write up. Thanks for sharing. How would you compare the rendering to the 90 Elmarit (with built in hood) from f/2.8 onwards? BTW, you need to get your hands on a M9 soon!
KL, very nice set! Love the composition and rendering on #4 with the 50Cron. The flare shot is also nicely done.

Thanks guys!

I am only slightly familiar with the 90 Elmarit, but I would judge that the 90 APO-Cron-ASPH is sharper wide open, or at least from f/2.8, and generally contrastier and with more magic in the boke. The Elmarit is an older design, an excellent one, but still not APO nor ASPH. I don't think anyone would find the Elmarit lacking in any way though, other than if they didn't like the rendering. It is possible that one lens or the other is better into the corners on FF, but I couldn't say, and the same with vignetting.

Thanks Joe!

Carsten - nice write up. I would love to try the Cron APO but I believe the Elmarit-M is best for me.

KL - nice shots. #4 is my favorite.

Almost there.......

Thanks Charles, Julian, lovinglife, Joe, Ryan & KL!

LL, interesting shots with the 21 Lux.

Charles, very nice shot with the 75 Lux.

Carsten, thanks for the 90 Cron AA review. I have been thinking about replacing my V3 with the AA, but I'm not entirely sold on it. My reason for switching would be that the V3 isn't quite up to modern standards in terms of optical performance (plenty of CA even stopped down). What is stopping me is that I actually prefer the drawing style of the 90 V3... By the way, when are you going to give up that Nikon nonsense, get yourself an M9 and return from the dark side?

KL, nice set - great light in a couple of the shots

Ryan, nice illustration of the dangers of all you can eat buffets

Joe, nice capture and again excellent focusing

Guys, wonderful photos, so how much money do i need, if i want to have a M9, a good wide, mid and tele primes (example, something like 20~, 35, 50 and 180 or 200, second hand?

Uzay: first of all, the M system tops out at 135mm, though I think there used to be a reflex system adapted for it. If you're a telephoto shooter, than the M system might not be for you. It's great though for 50mm and wider and definitely good at 75mm and 90mm, though accurate focusing becomes more of a challenge.

I would say minimum $10K if you go with Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses. I went with a used M9, ZM21 f/2.8, ZM35C, ZM50 Planar and CV75 f/1.8 and it totaled about $9K.

If you go all Leica and not the Summarit (budget line of lenses), then I would say in the $12-15K range.

A lot of the samples posted here, with the f/1.4 Summilux lenses, will push the budget much higher, since those lenses are in the $3500-$6500 range.

You can also look at used vintage lenses, though it's not an area with which I'm very familiar.

Luka: Great set!

Uzay, it depends a bit where you buy it, but if we take standard EU prices, the M9 will cost you something like €5,000 for a used one. Used ones are still not much cheaper than new ones. With lenses you have more of a choice. The cheapest ones are Voigtländer lenses that are usually in the €500-€1000 range. Mid range are Zeiss lenses, typically in the €800-€1500 range. High end are the Leica lenses which can cost, from typically about €3,000 per lens to as much as €7,000 for the 50 Noctilux. Leica has a budget line of lenses ("Summarit") that cost about the same as Zeiss lenses. You also have a choice of older generations of Leica lenses which are cheaper than new ones. How much depends on the lens in question.

Now as for focal lenghts, you have to be aware that there are no M rangefinder lenses beyond 135mm. And 135mm is barely usable - 90mm is for the most part the practical limit. Unlike on a DSLR you are not looking through the lens, so you don't get any magnification from a tele lens. You just get a very small box in the viewfinder approximately indicating the edges of the frame. At 135mm that box is tiny and without an external magnifier attached to the camera accurate focusing is nearly impossible.

For focal lenghts wider than 28mm you need an external viewfinder for framing. There are some excellent UWA M lenses so it's worth it, but it is a hassle. The sweet spot of the M9 is between 35 and 75mm.

There is nothing current longer than 90mm. If you are willing to use older, less sharp lenses (but still decent), you can get to 135mm f/2.8, but it is fat, long and heavy. There is also a 135mm f/3.4 APO which is even longer but not so fat, but this would be hard to focus, with no goggles.

For an M9, 21/2.8 ASPH, 35/2 ASPH, 50/2, and maybe a 90 Cron, all used, you could get away with the low low price of around 9000 Euro That is not exact, and I did no research, so I could be off. I am estimating a low price of 4000 Euro for the M9, which would be hard to find.

In what situations? Post some samples, and I will try to reciprocate, although you will have to imagine the corners.

Have you sold your 5DII kit yet? There is your answer

I am having too much fun with the Nikon still, and find it very satisfying with the 21/50/100 kit I have now, and a C/Y 80-200/4 on the way with Leitax adapter. The 200/2 VR makes for a great zoo lens, as well as smaller wildlife, my daughter in action, and large-format-like stitched panos.

The M8 is not full frame, which is my main beef with it at this point, as it bothers me somewhat that my 28, 50 and 90 are not good focal lengths with a 1.33x crop factor. The 35 is okay, and I use it by far the most, and I do enjoy the M8's IQ and rendering, and had fun today making the few 90AA test shots, but it isn't the same as full frame.

I am still not 100% sold on dishing out over 5000 Euro for a camera I find a little out-dated and a little flawed (slow, low-res screen, no real chrome, still slightly IR sensitive, louder shutter than my M8u), so I am still fence-sitting for now. Besides, if I switch back (or start using both equally), I would need to come up with even more money to fix my wide angle hole, and I don't have that money right now. I think I could get along with 28/50/90 most of the time, but the 35 is just too good to sell, and I would need a 21/24 at least sometimes. I am currently wondering if I should sell my 28/2 and buy a 24/1.4, but I want to try one first. I could also get a 24/2.8, which is an awesome lens, but I am somewhat undecided. I like Zeiss lenses very much, but for me they are too much of a hassle on the M8/M9, so I am not going that way. The same for Voigtländer lenses, although I like them less.

Speaking of the 24 mm lenses, they don't seem very popular in this thread strangely enough. The 24 Lux looks like a fantastic lens and the 24/2.8 has gotten a lot of praise, Erwin Puts speaks very highly of it for instance. Any reason no one here is using them? Personally I would like to get something wider than 35 mm and while the 28 cron looks like a winner it is a perhaps a little to close to my 35 cron in focal length so a 24 is a good alternative.

I think a lot of people want the extra stop of the 28 Cron, and so they skip the 24/2.8. On the other hand, if you are going to pay 5K for a wide angle Lux, many people skip the 24 and go for the 21, which is unique in the world in its specification. I think both of those might be mistakes, but I have only very brief experience with the 24 Elmarit, so I am not sure. I have zero experience with 21 or 24 Lux.

I had a tough time deciding between the 24 f/2.8 Elmarit and the 28 Cron....the 28 Cron ending winning in the end for me as I got a great deal I couldn't pass up. I loved the 24mm length on the Nikon D700 and if the 28 Cron seems too close to the 35 Lux I might have to give the 24 a shot. As much as I would love the 24 Lux the 24 Elmarit would probably be the one I would choose mainly for budget reasons. Both lenses look excellent. I have seen many examples of the 24 Elmarit lately and can say that it has much smoother bokeh than the Zeiss 25 f/2.8 and the microcontrast may be the best of all Leica lenses. I find it has a Leica rendering with the Zeiss ZE/ZF pop.

Luka - Great shots. I like the last one best. The colors are fantastic!
