What are they doing? I see metal detecting, photography, and I think someone standing bear watch.
Is this an indigenous site, or a poaching investigation?

Hi Steve,
The shore trip was primarily for archeology. Dr. Doug (far left) and Captain Tom of the Royal Navy (with the metal detector) are looking over an Inuit tent ring & cairn for artifacts from the Franklin Expedition. And Trevor is certainly on bear watch, as polar bears are wired to be the ultimate opportunists. The rest of the crew were given shore leave, as is often done if there's spare seats in the heli. Dr. Doug put them to work digging in short order when they got a hit with the metal detector.
Here's another shot of Dr. Doug & Captain Tom. Tom was with us as part of an agreement between the British Royal Navy & the Canadian Coast Guard to train their captains in Arctic navigation, as they plan to have larger presence in the Arctic & Antarctic due to receding ice & changes in geopolitics.

Thanks for that information Mat. Interesting work. Very similar to many expeditions I did in geology. However i avoided the polar areas, and focused on much warmer Africa. We had a lot more to watch out for than bears so we abasically were all armed many times.

I have taken a similar photos several years back but with nobody in the center. This time it just happened by accident. The wedding photographer taking bridal shots was positioned on the other side across from me from where the sun reflection can't be seen.
