One of the Marine One Helicopters..

Not a great image as it was a good ways away with a 35mm lens while we were driving on the beltway around DC last week.

A cold November morning with a drizzle just beginning, this colorful building has four stories of Japanese restaurants, open 24 hours daily — only in Japan: 3F has Kyushu chicken, 2F has lamb and Hokkaido beef and 1F has fish — I can’t make out what food B1 has. (This image was reprocessed using the Cobalt Elite Portra 800 NB emulation, my favorite).

I know this is an Image thread, but all of you shoot Leica and have posted amazing images here and thought that some if not most may have made the move from older digital Leica's to M10's.

From what I have learned through watching about every M10 video on you tube the M10 has a newer sensor, better low light capability, larger/better view finder, 4mm thinner and does not have the battery life of the 240. I have also looked into the Q system and SL as an alterative to use along side the M240 I have.

Is it worth the upgrade to move from my remaining M240 to a M10?

I know this is something only I can decide if it's worth it or not, but would really like to hear anyone's thoughts on the subject.

Thank you

I never regreted moving to the M 10s from my M 262 (stripped down 240). I bought my first M10 and liked it so much I bought a second and sold my 262 to help fund the M 10 mono. (I need two color bodies for work). If I ever fully retire I will sell my two color bodies but will keep the M 10 Mono.

I loved my M240! Every situation and preference is different, of course, but when I boil it down personally, better high ISO performance was the main difference for me. Everything else was nice but not necessary. I ended up switching from the M10 to M10-R for the extra resolution and I love it. It's nice to have the extra headroom to crop more when needed. And I like the M10-R colors better than both the M10 and M240.

^^ Never had an M240, but tried out the DNG files and found them more difficult to work with than those of the M10 — not every color cast problem can be solved by better profiles. Also, better high ISO performance; but the M10 has an issue of a "skewed" distribution of the dynamic range that is weighted more to the shadows than to the highlights: that requires judicious underexposure and lifting the shadows in post, especially when shooting into the light, or with strong side-light, which I often like to do. When you get used to it it ceases to be a problem.

Apparently, the M10R does not have this issue; but although many feel that the M10R has better colors than the M10, some don't agree, including a few people whose color sense I value. I should hasten to say that I don't have a view on this. The bottom line is that it's always best to try out a camera that you are thinking of buying; but, if you cannot do that, at least have a look how the DNG files work.

Battery life will take getting used to ... like going from AA to AAA sized cells, to get the slimmer body profile.

Otherwise the increased file size of the M10R is about the only other consideration. Not sure how the smaller files on the M10 play with battery life, though. Might be better than the M10R.

I do miss my M240-P battery life, but I'm dealing with it.

I'm an old film guy and used to have to change rolls with my blads ever 12 or 24 shots and my 35mm cameras every 36 frames. So it's not an issue for me. I always take an extra battey but I also did that with my 262. As far a DR I don't see an issue in the real world. And I don't see the extra resolution as a plus. I wish my M 10 M was 24mps and not 40.

I liked my m240 a lot. It was my first M and it really grew on me, but I upgraded to the m10 ...it was just Okay, so (I sold it, bought another m240) then the m10R came out, I prefer more MP's so I picked up the m10R. (Good choice) I really love my m10R...In fact I think it's perfect and would recommend it highly. It just works, does everything I want it to...Not sure about color or Dynamic range or anything else. I just know the files are flexible in post and are really big which I like. It's been bullet proof.
