Is this the end of the road, the road less traveled ... or an invitation to find out where it leads.

Well, for my truck, it was the end of the road ... me, gotta be an invitation to explore (since there was no signage), I figure it had to go somewhere, even if somewhere was nowhere.

Mostly, I hoped it didn't lead to banjo's, shotguns or Negan.

Have you tried to 6-bit code it? I have tried and the problem I found was one of the screws for the mount plate is right where the code goes.

rscheffler wrote:
That's interesting. Just had a look at mine and no screw where the code goes. Did you buy it new or used? If used, how old is it? I bought mine used about 11 years ago, serial # 158423xx.

OK, looks like it's older than mine. I vaguely remember reading way back that some earlier ZM lenses had a screw in the location where the code goes. I guess Zeiss/Cosina tweaked the design to address this once digital became more popular and a greater likelihood of ZM lenses being used on Leica digital cameras.

Down the path somewhere, about halfway to nowhere.

Ya never know what you might find, till you go look.
I've never seen a tree stump quite like that before. I have no idea how it became to have such a shape.

The lens works great and I'll just deal with it being uncoded...

Thanks

When the M11 came out, I thought about the image below. Taken at noon, the light in the street was so bright that you had to squint if you didn't wear sunglasses. I like it a lot and doubt that it would be improved or made more easy to make with the M11.

Indeed, I had no interest in the greater resolution of the M10-R over the M10; nor am I interested in the still greater resolution of the M11. My view is essentially that the 60 MP resolution of the M11, which has  increasingly been referred to as "medium-format territory", is not what I am after, having been been interested since film days in the "35 mm aesthetic" for my photography; and considering that the look I want is easier to achieve from a lower resolution image, as in the image below.

On the other hand, some of the reviews suggest that highlight rendition of the M11 can achieve a gentler (more film-like) highlight roll-off; but I'm not yet sure how that plays out in the three DNG resolutions (60, 36, 18 MP) of the M11. And I am interested in seeing more on how the color rendition, supposedly like the SLS-2, differs among the three resolutions.

Since we're now going into another Covid peak, there is no rush for me to decide, since I'm not likely to be shooting much in any case, as I won't be getting back to Paris and Bangkok for some time — I'm in he Washington, DC area now. Also, I have the new Ricoh GR IIIx, in addition to my Ricoh GR III, and, of course, my M10. In the meantime, I'll be watching what others find and conclude.

[I've written about all this and posted this image in the M11 thread, but as I got no reaction there, I thought it was worth posting is this venerable thread.]

EXACTLY that. Similarly I'm quite satisfied with my M240, GR III and GR IIIx. Yes, if the M240 hits the dust I will proceed to the M11. But that is unlikely - the M240 been a tool (not an investment!) for many years and it recently came back from a very useful wellness trip to Wetzlar.

Definitely not looking for 60MP either, but I'm curious about the DR of the M11's 36MP mode. And the USB3 charging. But that's pretty much it.

I personally don't care about the Leica M11 cash: the $2750 I paid for my 2nd hand M240 was worth it - I probably write off $1000 - $1500 over 8-10 years or so which is perfectly acceptable. The M11 will write off a bit more (particularly if I would buy new) - so be it. But I totally understand if others balk at the initial cash outlay.

With the excellent quality of the output of the GR III and IIIx I sometimes wonder if carrying the M240 with two lenses or so in my pocket makes any sense at all. So I have focused my shooting with the M240 on using vintage lenses, and/or shooting wide open. As a result the awesome GR III / x has inspired my Leica shooting!

I've been heading in in a similar direction lately. The return on time invested in high resolution and pixel count isn't all that it's made out to be. Light and shadow has a much better return, for me anyway. An early Summitar, Nikkor 10.5cm, J3, the new 50mm Heliar, ...

I can relate ... the GX8 + PL 15/1.7 was my inspiration to journey into Leica shooting.

I've gone through the CL > M-P 240, and this week have added the TL2. While obviously a different camera from the M-P 240, I'm finding the TL2 to serve the purpose of smaller rigs like the GR III or GX8.

Being one of the newer Leica users in this thread I'm in awe of the images all of you share here everyday and look forward to seeing what you post next. The images you share give inspiration for me to do better and learn how to use the system to produce good images. The system helps produce images that I love, but the journey to that end is nothing I have ever experienced with any other system.

The M11 is here and it would be nice to have a new camera, but my M240 is working for me and I need to master it first. I don't see a newer camera making me a better photographer in any way, but I find myself more interested in picking up a Mono camera like the M246 and even fell drawn to the very basic operation of the M262 M-D.

Thank you to everyone for the help and advice you have given me.

Mark
