KL, superb shots! Fascinating stuff I really like how you have presented the rendering from the different lenses too. I love the B&W from the 28 Elmarit. I have found the 28 Elmarit has a richness and unique rendering when converted to B&W. I have not seen this with the 28 Cron. I really like the ZM 50/2 Planar too!
Very nice series KL. Hopefully I'll have a 50 Planar soon, so am interested to see any images from it.
Thanks guys for the comments. Joe there is only so much DoF one can get when forced to work at f/2.8 but it's an aspect of the image that I like - that the focus is on the people farther back rather than the guy at the right. Thanks Ryan for the feedback on the CV 75 1.8. I think I will give it a shot. It's at a price point where I don't mind being uncertain about how it will perform. By your description, I think it will fit some of my needs.
For a change of pace, something a bit more monochromatic, again from Munich.
A short walk around the Kleinhesseloher See (lake) in the Englischer Garten (park) starting at the Seehaus (lake house), which is a cafe/restaurant.
The first image is the ZM 21 f/2.8 and the remainder are the ZM 35 f/2.8. And yes, lots of Lightroom fill light and clarity in these. Also, I didn't get the couple in step the way I had hoped in the last image. I guess it's part of the Leica learning curve because I'm used to my 1D where in this situation I would have just fired a 3-4 frame 10 fps burst without having to think much about the exact decisive moment. Consider also that the image was made on Dec. 2, about a week after I got the M9 and was still learning the feel of its shutter release, which is so much different than the Canon's.
KL, very good and interesting photos.
Ron, nice photos. The third one is clearly my favourite, the balance of the composition matches the calm of the scene.
Luka, great shots as always. How did you arrive at f6.7 for the last one, out of curiosity (since it's not one used all that much).
There's no issue or anything, I'm just curious what rule you used to find that aperture for that shot.. I rarely find myself in between 5.6 or 8.0 for these shots.. unless I would rather f8 but need slightly faster ss.
It seems your thoughts on the m9 have come a long way... from doubts to enjoyment... your shots continue to inspire!
Thanks Edward! That f/6.7 is in reality most likely f/5.6. The M9 shows an approximate aperture that is usually within +-1 stop of the real value. With bright scenes it tends to guess a smaller aperture than it really is.
Why f/5.6? Because that's the aperture at which the 25 Biogon delivers optimal performance. DOF is no problem with the lens so I chose the aperture to get the best possible image quality. With rangefinder lenses I tend to stay below f/8 as it's the point where diffraction starts kicking in.
As for the M9 in general.. well, I took my 5DII and Zeiss ZE glass out for a spin yesterday. The DSLR felt so incredibly big and clumsy now that I'm used to the M9. The M9 is a much more elegant tool. I did however enjoy using live view and having a proper LCD where I could actually see what the image was like. Plus the ZE lenses are in my opinion still something really special. But yes, I'm much more fond of the M9 than initially I thought I'd be. As a camera and not an electronic device it's a real pleasure to use.
Luka, superb shots! The B&W shots are stunning What I like most is that they are not your usual travel shots! Great conversions too. What program did you use? I love the shot in the desert with the 75 Cron. Particularly with the high contrast scene. Beautiful shot with 35 Lux Asph.
I'm testing how well the thumbs up works for adding stabilization. I took a shot (rather boring sorry) at 1/13 , 5.6, 200. Some of you may recall the trouble I was having hand holding at lower ss.
I didn't sharpen this as much as some others.. and I went just a touch too heavy on the clarity slider (dark halo lower left building).. however with taught neckstrap and the thumbs up, I feel 1/13 is pretty respectable for this cam (in zombie mode). I'll be trying a more scientific test in good light, when I have a bit more time. The x1 may be all I can take to the grand canyon this weekend (if we can go, have to check snow).
Anyway, it's pedantic, but it's progress for low ss hand holding for me.. so I'll share. The repaired x1 sure is a lot sharper than the out of box experience.. I just wish they'd release the bloody firmware update and address some speed.
Luka, thanks for the info.. and satisfying my curiosity I didn't know it was such an approximate guess.. so was that in ss priority then?
This cam, macbook air, firmware update.. should be a wicked travel combo.
Thanks Charles! I used Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop. There was a strong haze (smog) in Cairo that was for the most part problematic but it sort of works when converted to B/W.
Edward, good to hear that your X1 is working better. Hopefully the new firmware will be released soon..

No, in aperture priority. In 99% of cases I leave the shutter speed decision to the camera.
well 1/13 isn't going to give me 'critical sharpness' but it's nice to know i can shoot at 1/15 at a decent iso during sunset... and have results that would print nicely.
Hmm, interesting that you set the aperture and it still guesses...
Hi everybody,
I recently scanned my M6 Tri-x shots from a trip to Utah and hope you guys won't mind some film in here.
I woudl love to hear what you guys think.
Ron, nice snow shots! Love the composition on #1 & 2.
Luka, nice shots! I like #1 and 3 best. #1 is a stunner, I like that it has a timeless feel to it. Nice B&W processing too! #2 I could tell it was the 35Lux as I was scrolling, great lens, huh? Did you notice any focus shift on #4? Looks like the trees are a bit out of the focus zone or maybe its the web re-size? Haven't seen that many shots of the ZM25 lately, but these two are really nice samples of what this lens is capable of.
Luka, the first one is excellent.
Kyle, nice set. #3 is my favourite.
Edward, nice light even if it's just a practice shot.
Charles, great set and I like the first one the most.
