The 75 APO is probably the most flexible of the 3. A bit smaller than the 90, focuses faster as far as I know, focuses closer with one of the best reproduction ratios of any Leica M lens, very sharp, etc. One of the finer lenses in the M lineup.

On the other hand, the 90 is killer sharp at infinity and is a 90, if you need a 90 and not a 75. Only focuses to 1m and is 'soft' close up. 'Soft' as in not as sharp as it is at infinity; though it is a confirmed fact, I'm not sure if it causes any problems. That's just the internet buzz.

I recently got the 75 Summilux. So far, it's an interesting lens. It's big and heavy, which isn't the end of the world, but it does have a long and slow focus throw, which will take some getting used to. It is fast though and has more of an old school look than the two above lenses, and my other M lenses of nearby focal lengths (90 Macro and 50 ASPH). I don't think it will be an everyday lens for me. It will probably be reserved for specific situations: portraits, low light where I need the reach, etc. I don't picture myself traveling with it; the 50 and 90 Macro seem to fit my style better for that.

Thanks Kidtexas ! Much food for thought. I am looking for a tele which i can also bring on a trip - but the 90 Macro is just a tad too slow for me. will investigate the 75 a bit more.

Cheers

Thanks Joe, Charles, Joakim, AlexTokyo.

Don't overlook the Summarits or the 90 Elmarit.
I have summarit 75 and I am very happy with it. Besides image quality size being the other important consideration.

Thnx Joe and KL much. :-)

I ordered a new lens encasement for it to allow 49mm filters on the X1. Then a 49mm to 77mm step up ring, I can use my filters. It's got to come from China though, so gonna be a few weeks. But should be cool!

Joe, very nice shots
KL ... Thank you! The choice between 75 Cron AA, 75 Lux and 90 Cron AA is complex one. If you have a very accurately calibrated lens of any of the lenses, they are fun to use. I was fortunate to acquire the 75 Lux, German made as new. The 75 Lux is very accurate and breeze to use. This lens has such unique rendering, but it may not be a lens you gel with either. My 75 Cron AA was bought second hand. It went to Melbourne for calibration as it was way out. It is now back and excellent to use. Rendering again is so different, and other than FL, basically two totally different lenses. The beauty of the 75's is the MFD is 0.7 and .75 m for the Cron and Lux resp. My 90 Cron AA second hand, is still in Solms , being repaired as focus was not consistent. This lens has beautiful rendering and has a very unique feel to the images. My understanding with the Leica lenses is evolving in that there is no wrong lens choice, just which paint brush you prefer. You may end up with more than one, as I did

If you are after form factor, size and weight with a MFD of 0.7m, the 75 Cron AA is a brilliant lens. The 75 Lux is an extraordinary lens, but it is not easy to find a good copy. The 90 Cron Apo, is an amazing lens too, but be wary about finding a good copy. The 90 Cron A, I found very sharp close up as well as med to long distance. IMO, I think some of the internet buzz is with respect to having a well calibrated unit, that encompasses all distances. This quite often require a different cam to be installed.

Nice Gregory - I particularly like the last one of the car in the snow. The light quality is great.

Just going through and catching up on images from my Munich trip last month and reprocessing some of them now that I know Lightroom a bit better.

Riding the Munich subway is based on the honour system, so there is always the temptation to take a risk and ride without a ticket. The ticket inspectors are 'plain clothes' and do random blitzes in teams of 4-5. Sometimes you can figure out who they are, but if it's busy, forget about it. Besides, once they board the train, you're stuck. On the new trains you could walk all the way down to the other end, but on the old ones, like that pictured in the background, you can't.

So here is a passenger providing documentation for the inspector to write up the fine. I think it's 40 Euro, though it could be 60. I haven't really paid attention to that because I always ride with a ticket (of course). Just one less thing to get stressed over.

M9 ZM 21 f/2.8 ISO 2500

Joe, thanks for reposting those. I really like the last image.

I'm getting more and more curious about the CV lenses. The first one I will get, probably next week, is the 15mm. Next might be the 75 1.8, which I know Ryan has or had... We'll see how that goes because of what I've seen from it, it might be a decent portrait lens, but maybe not all that sharp wide open. I might still consider the Summarit 75.

For the time being I've given up on the 35 f/1.2 because my local dealer (see below) can't get them any longer and if I really want one Cameraquest still has stock, though now at a premium, and no idea how long that will last. We'll see what arrives in the summer.

Thanks Shuan, after I posted my mini-rant, I did a bit of looking around the rangefinder and leica forums and came across that link as well.

Coincidentally, I know the OP, Rob Skeoch. He's the guy I bought my ZM lenses from, as well as where I'll get the CV 15 next week. I've known him for about 20 years since back in the days when we both shot NFL football and other sports together. Very nice guy and is a Canadian Zeiss/Voigtlander dealer, among other niche products. If there's anyone in Canada looking for Zeiss glass (ZM, ZE, ZF), check him out at bigcameraworkshops (just google it like that). Tell him I sent you and he'll include a free B+W UV filter with the lens, and I think he also includes free shipping within Canada for Zeiss purchases, though you should confirm that.

Charles, very cool shot of the "flower power" Guinean guy

Joe, I've said it before, but very nice shots with the CV 50/1.5. My favorites are #2 and #7.

Gregory, excellent shots with the Nocti! My favorites are #9 & #10.

Ron, nice shot, I like the red/blue elements in the image.

Joakim, great winter shots! My favorites are #2 and #3.

Thanks Joe & Luka,

A few more from the Munich subway. Many of the older stations are great to check out if you're a fan of 70s European/German design aesthetics. The Münchner Freiheit station has been renovated a bit though, with a shocking to the eye fluorescent yellow corrugated wall covering that after a very short time has become covered in black grime. I wonder if any thought was given to this? The blue columns are illuminated with very deep blue light to give an impressive rich hue that is difficult to translate to 'film.' When I adjusted exposure for the general scene, the brighter areas of the blue columns washed out badly. I had to apply a -1.5 stop exp. comp. brush to get it kind of back again.

The top image is ZM 21 f/2.8 and has been cropped and perspective corrected quite a lot because I messed up the composition by being lazy. The other two are ZM 35 f/2.8. All on the M9.

Thanks all for the comments

Ron, nice set, like the "human forms" on #2, would be perfect if the guy on the right was in focus, nevertheless nice shot. I think the sensor on the M9 captured the blue details on #3 pretty nicely. I'm always amazed at the shadow details of the M9.

Luka, thank you

Gregory, good luck with M9. Excellent series of shots! Love the look of the 50/1.0 Noctilux. My aquisitions of lenses has ceased I am have reached my limit!!! Very nice PP too!

Ron, great shots! I really like how you find the WB balance, and maintain colour vibrance and bite to your shots! The CV 75/1.8 is meant to be an excellent lens. The shots I have seen so far, are great with this lens.

Joakim, very nice shots! There is a special quality about how the 50 Lux renders IMO

Ron, the CV 75 1.8 is a very unique lens. Wide open to f/2.5 or so it is sharp in the center...yet has a 'glow' to it that makes it excellent for portraits. From f/2.8 on the 'glow' is gone and from about f/4 on it is very sharp corner to corner...though not as sharp as the 75 Cron at any aperture. I have seen people say it fits between the 75 Cron and 75 Lux and I would agree with that from what I have seen of the Leica lenses. If you are using it as a street lens, I would say go for the Summarit or CV 75 2.5 instead. However, if you will be using the 75 for portraits as well, the 75 1.8 from CV should not be overlooked. I got rid of it b/c I want a sharp street lens and don't use this length on the M8 for portraits

Hi all,
Some pics taken today at a local religious festival called Thaipusam.

The EXIFs may be alittle incorrect (forgot to change lens settings);

75 APO Chron

28 Elmarit ASPH

135 Elmar

The 75 APO was on loan from a friend. It's absolutely an amazing lens!

50mm Zeiss Planar

Cheers
