Joe, nice shot! It really depends. Before the M9, with the M8 your fav FL was the 35, but with the M9, maybe it should be 50. You know my opinion on 50 Lux The beauty with the 50 Lux, is you have one fast lens @1.4, which comes in very handy. But then the 35 Lux Asph I is a great lens too.

IMO, the two lens kit ideally, would be the 35/75, if your base FL is 35

Xiao Long Bao, usually white or slightly off white in color (has mince pork and soup inside). Though these are flavored fusion-type xiao long bao (so they each have pork and soup then something special like foie gras or truffles, ginseng, garlic, crab roe, or etc)... Good going down, but I kinda feel sick now. Think it's because I've been doing this no meat thing for a few months, and today I just chose to cheat with something really oily and rich. Sigh, live and learn..

Adam, nice shot! The ZM 50 Planar is a great lens... Should watch the meat thing though

Daniel, congrats on the 28 Cron. Nice shots!

Some shots taken with the storms in the backdrop all PP in C1 Pro.

Ron, the two graveyard (?) shots and the stairs shot are great!

Joe, tough question. The ZM50/1.5 seems very nice, and I would consider it if I didn't already have the 50 Lux ASPH, but it has field curvature and sometimes pretty wild boke, so personally I prefer the Leica. The Leica is also just one of those all-time great lenses, like the ZF100MP and other top lenses.

As I have mentioned previously, the 75 Cron doesn't excite me the same way. It is based on the optical formula usesd for the 50 Lux ASPH, but somehow it feels less special to me, a bit sterile. Ultimately, it is very capable, nothing really wrong with it, but the magic from the 50 is gone, IMO.

35/75 or 35/50/90 is a tough choice. One thing is for sure: 50 and 75 are very close, but the gap from 35 to 50, while not huge, brings a totally different way of seeing, so that could be worth it. Being a minimalist myself, 2-lens kits appeal, but in this case I would be tempted to go for the 3.

Thanks Charles. Nice shots, I like your last shot with the surfer best

Adam, that's the first time I see those buns in color!

Daniel, congrats on the 28Cron. Definitely a keeper lens.

-------------------------
I think I'll probably add the 50Lux ASPH next.. I agree with Charles & Carsten, there is some sort of "magic" on some of the images I see posted with this lens.

A storm is coming! The water seems smooth like you had it on a slow shutter speed for the first shot, are you handholding or using a tripod?

Love the colors in the waves on the second shot BTW...

Yes, I'm going to stay away from meat as much as I can.. And yeah the 50/2 is growing on me..

Daniel Buck - Is the 28/2 Summicron noticeably better then the Ultron you had? I mean aside from the soft corners?!

joe88 - Yeah, it's not usual for the dumplings to be color-coded. I think the restaurant is gaining popularity for it's novelty fusion XLB, since everyone else seems to also be impressed with them (many other orders from other people this morning).

Charles, great colours!
Adam, nice photo but I'm not sure I'm tempted
Daniel, good photos from a very bare landscape. The 28 looks nice.
Ron, a great but rather gloomy set.
John, you made good use of the 35 Lux ASPH in that photo
Luka, the third one is my favourite in your last set.
KL, nice photos. I love the expression in her face in the first photo

I don't know for sure if the center of the image is any sharper, it may have more contrast than the 2.0 ultron, but I'm not for sure, I've not done any side by side shots.

Congrats on the 28 Cron, Daniel. Does this mean you are moving further away from LF? (you recently sold your 8x10, didn't you?)

No, I haven't put the 8x10 up for sale yet. The 4x5 I'm not even considering selling. The 8x10 (for me) is just to much of a hassle, with no real darkroom I can only develop one 8x10 at a time (I can develop 6 4x5s at a time), it's more work to develop, more work to scan, and more work/space to store the film. And the bulk and space required to go hiking with the 8x10 and even just a few film holders is just more than I want to deal with while hiking. If I'm going to be shooting right next to my jeep, I'll take the 8x10, but more often than not I like to do some hiking, so I pretty much always leave the 8x10 at home.

The M9 I got for hiking, and for times when I bring the 4x5 with me, stuffing the M9 in the backpack wouldn't take up much room at all (with just one lens, maybe two), versus how much space my SLR takes up when I bring one or two lenses. Not giving up on large format, just widdling it down to the stuff that I actually use. Haven't put the 8x10 up for sale yet, but I probably will sometime. I've got to many cameras at home as it is, haha!

I know what you mean about too many cameras I sometimes catch my girlfriend looking longingly at the shelf-space my cameras occupy, or at least I imagine I do. I did pick up a 4x5, a Linhof Master Technika, partly because of some great posts by you, but I didn't go out with it much yet. I have so little time, with a small family on my hands, so I usually grab the Nikon D3, which is just so much more efficient to work with. Still, I will keep the 4x5 until I have had a chance to decide if I like it as much as I thought I would. I might swap the Linhof for a Chamonix though. Somehow the technical side of the Linhof didn't end up thrilling me as much as I thought it would, and I see the downsides more clearly, like the limited movements and extra kilogram.

Joe, Adam and Joakim... Thank You

Adam, the first shot was on a tripod, Gitzo 0531 and Feisol CB 30C head. This is probably the lightest and most space effective setup. I also used a ND x8 filter, f/5.6 - 8, about 4 secs @ISO160.

I originally had the 28 Ultron second hand, heavily used version, it was very good, but does not compare to the 28 Elmarit which I picked up shortly afterwards. I now have both the 28 Cron and Elmarit, and are very different in rendering. The Elmarit is very sharp, great micro contrast and amazing for landscapes and great for B&W conversions. The 28 Cron has brilliant rendering, sharp but very different to the Elmarit. I thought I was going to move on the 28 Elmarit, but I have decided to keep it, as the Elmarit and Cron are so uniquely different.

Interesting Nokton shot Joe. Ron, love your second series, especially #1, #2, #4, #5 & #6.

Great shots with the 35 Lux John & Charles. I soo regret not buying it when I had the chance when it was in stock. That's some seriously fine rendering.

Comparing the 50/1.5 Sonnar vs the 50 Lux is very interesting. Same focal length, more or less the same aperture yet as different as two lenses can be. Since both are German lenses, I'd say that the 50 Lux to the 50 Sonnar in rendering style what Thomas Mann is to Friedrich Schiller is in writing style. The Lux produces a much more strict, precise, formal and technical rendering while the 50/1.5 a far more free artistic one. From a pure technical performance point of view the 50 Lux blows the Sonnar away in every department - the latter suffers from every optical aberration known to human kind. And yet, I'd take the Sonnar any day over the Lux. It comes down to personal preference. To use another analogy from literature, the 50 Lux is prose while the 50 Sonnar is poetry.

I actually agree with you there in essence although not in preference. The 75 Cron is a very netural lens. When it comes to optical aberrations it is close to perfect. Sharpness wide open is good but not as good as for instance the 100 Makro Planar mentioned above. From practical experience, I'd say that it's peak performance is about f/5.6 and the sharpness is first rate. It's a lens that is difficult not to like but also one that is difficult to love. It's nice for portraits and I really like it for B/W images. The 50 Lux is definitely not as netural. It has a personality and a distinct style. Some love it, others don't. I fall into the second category so I prefer the more neutral 75 Cron look.

A couple of shots from the other day:

Finally, for you guys in warmer climates, here is a pile of snow, just for you

Thanks everyone for the comments on the last set. Carsten, these images were all done along the Isar river, starting at a cool looking semi-circular concrete bench, which is the source of the leg detail. The shot with all the roots is just an overgrown drain along one of the paths by the river. I enjoy visiting the Munich cemeteries, particularly the east and south ones, but didn't even make it to one of them this time.

Joakim, I agree, the set is somewhat gloomy, but thats how it was at around 3-4 pm at this time of year. The light was fading but I was still finding scenes I wanted to photograph.. But these also remind me a lot of Munich in the winter. It's a somewhat different feel from what I'm used to in Canada. Looking at these images now on my calibrated display at home, I might have processed them a bit brighter than I did.

Charles, those are some really moody images - very effective IMO.

Daniel, I really like the first image. In a way it looks like an ancient destroyed castle or perhaps something out of a sci-fi scene.

Just arrived home from the airport but here's one more that was already on the server...

Thank you Ron I really enjoyed your low key shots with the rich colours, as they really exihibited very different mood!

Nice shot with the subtle rendering on the pylons

Luka, I would have a look at the 35 Lux Asph version 1 which is John's shot, as it's rendering maybe more to your taste than the version II, and a lot cheaper too My understanding the chrome/brass or titanium versions have very little if any focus shift.

Luka, nice shots with the 18/4 and 75Cron. I can still see some red color cast on the left side of the 18/4 or is that reflection from elsewhere?

I actually like the 50/1.5 Sonnar, especially with some of the shots I've seen here and elsewhere, but I don't know if I want to buy one, it may be too "poetic" for a general purpose 50 (for me). I already have the older 50CronV3 for when I want some "old school" rendering. I think I'll revisit the Sonnar after I build my modern Leica kit. Since the 50Lux is out of stock most places, I'll take some time to think over it. Next week, I'll go over to a friend's place and try out his copy (if I can get it off his camera!).

Revisiting the 35/75 2 lens combo, I might just get a 75 Summarit instead of a 75Cron if I want a 2 lens kit. Only concern with the Summarit series is the rubber focus grip, just don't know how durable it is? Anyone has some experience with this lens?

In the pretext of comparing film vs digital, here's a shot with 35Lux ASPH v1. on my M6. HP5 Plus. Not the best example as it was in the night @ISO400 1/30s (and a moving target). I can already tell that I'm loving the extra stop over the 35Cron

------------------------------
I called Leica today and they told me my M9 LCD display was faulty. Will be replaced under warranty. Hopefully I'll get it back next week.

The trouble is that from what I can see the chrome version is about as expensive as the MkII version. If I buy it from I have to add about 30% to the price for import duties and VAT.

I've found one black MkI locally for about half the price of an MkII but I'm not sure I would find the focus shift acceptable.

There is definitely a color cast but the image has not been corrected with CornerFix. It's straight out of the camera with the lens coded as a 21 Elmarit. Nice film shot with the 35 Lux!
