Does this mean you're more positive when it comes to using the 50 APO on the M-246? I'm considering downsizing from the Noctilux to the APO but performance on the M-246 is a key factor to consider.
Yes and no. Yes it is a better experience now. The sharpness has gone up considerably and thus the images have more pop. Not that sharpness is the only factor of a good photo, but it does help draw the eye, especially in black and white. I'm also hitting focus more consistently again, which is a plus And the bokeh and falloff has gone back to what I consider familiar, so the rendering is nicer all around.
However, I still think the 50APO is wasted on black and white simply because of my love for the way the 50APO renders colors. The way I think about it is this. IF you have a M240 and an M246 then why not get the 50APO. But if you only have a M246 just get yourself one of the many good 50s out there and save some money (or stick with the Noctilux which is great in black and white because most of the lens flaws are hidden by the lack of color).
Thanks Richard and also Werner and Edward for the likes. I don't actually like that garish Analog Effect treatment myself...but then I often seem to post images that probably don't meet an FM statistical quality measure!
I revisited some of these 'Cron1' images today since I have had a nibble elsewhere on the Hexanon-M 35 that I am trying to sell (also now on B&S here ).
The Hexanon is a better lens as far as handling highlights is concerned, but there's something lovely about the Cron. I also picked up a V1 Voigtlander Nokton 35 f1.2 last week, for a very good price, thereby delaying indefinitely any plans to acquire a ZM 35. It was an impulse buy, being partially cashed-up from selling a Pentax 6x7 body and prism-finder.
Here are a few Hexanon-M 35 images that I don't think I've posted before, all on M9:
