Robert, My 28 cron has a very defined click. If you push the ring up it will move a bit, but it's not loose. It was tightened by DAG when it had the loose front group issue.
As most may know the biggest problem is if the lens is carried with the hood attached, especially upsidedown, and also mounting while holding the front group. The lens should be grasped close to the mount. All this according to DAG.
Edward, as mentioned. One with profile and the other without. It's subtle but the difference is there. Especially in the TIFF file, where you get more color information.
And here is a shot from the 120APO. Nothing fancy, was just noticing how bad it can flare. Also pay attention to the bokeh, although it's backlit you can see it fattens up and gets really odd. I can show this in other images (later) that aren't backlit, but it can be weirdly distracting. I'm liking it for half body images though.
Thank you Adam for the samples. Color is very subjective and I actually like both versions, but if I had to chose, I would pick the first one. The backlit portrait looks really nice. Using mostly Zeiss lenses I tend to appreciate flare as I rarely get it with my lenses
Speaking of the 28 cron and its hood, I've been using mine a lot more since I decided to use it without the (monstrous) original hood. While it's great to have such small lens I'm wondering if anyone is using a smaller hood with their 28 cron? I know there is a expensive (and rare?) option from Leica but is there anything else?

Yes, one of the things I miss about Zeiss glass.
Agree, colors are always subjective. But the colorchecker does get me very close to what I see when shooting. And in some cases the difference is so noticeable that it makes me wonder why Leica hasn't built better profiles.

There's 3 hoods that can fit on the 28 cron, the stock one, the 12589 that comes with 35 lux pre fle and the 12466 flower hood. They all fit and the smallest one is the 12589 that can be covered with the 14040. The downfall is that it doesn't look very attractive but at least it's more manageable than the massive stock hood. If you can get your hands on the 12466 it's definitely the nicest looking one with the least blockage in the rangefinder. You can also get screw on 46mm hoods on ebay if you don't mind them.

+1 on the 12466. It also works nicely on the Summilux 35/1.4 ASPH pre-FLE...pricey though

And I think they are discontinued? As much as I like the looks of the hood I just can't set myself to buy the 12466 for that amount of money.
The 12589 seems to fit fine as an alternative. Much smaller in size.

Yes, they are discontinued. I was watching a couple on ebay, hoping for a good deal when they were discontinued....price pretty much doubled overnight. I ended up getting one bundled with my Summicron 28 and it is a very nicely made hood.

I also stopped using the plastic hood and am using a $5 46mm vented screw-on hood. It's possible to use as is, though there is some moderate vignetting at wider apertures. But since the lens already vignettes a lot, it's not always that noticeable. I have since modified the hood by filing away the areas where it vignettes, resulting in a mild petal shape. A likely downside of this hood is if one uses a UV filter, ND, etc. as it will move the hood out farther, increasing vignetting. I rarely use filters and if I do, I'd probably not use the hood for those times. But IMO, the 28 Cron benefits from use of a hood as it's somewhat susceptible to flare from bright light sources just outside the frame. Another downside is the vents don't line up properly with the Cron and cause some VF blockage... but it's only $5 and I guess some work with a Dremel might fix the problem. So far I have't bothered.
I also like the 12466 and was casually looking for one, but agree, the price is crazy. I wonder if there's a market for a knockoff...?
