Edward, Ron, I agree about the size, it is huge. especially the lens. But not much for body compare to DSLR I use.
Adam, I have the system include today is two days. I am still getting myself use to the system. Do I love them so far, you bet.
To put it simple, my brain don't want it, but my heart love it. I kind of expected what I will get, what is the limitation of the system. And it turns out exact as I expected, it is shining for what it can do and suck for what it can't. Browse Leica Ad video you almost think it is an action camera, but compare to D810, it is laughable at most. AF is loud and sloppy. AF-on button I use all the time can only AF-s no AF-C. (you do have slow AF_C for shutter and center only focus make it almost useless to me, unless I am f4 above and have ample light)
Do I think make sense to get this over D810, absolutely not at least from IQ wise. But do I love the system, and will I keep the unit? another absolutely. but there is reason for this. I will try to cover it late.
I spend a hour before work to test two lens and system with tripod and handhold shooting infinity. My impression is the lens sick good. But to get sharp result to deserve the system, Tripod please. Handhold at 1/250 with 70mm, I still can see the blur zoom 100% at infinity. This makes me worried about usability of system. D810 has no such an issue. I have to add D810 is really an engineer wonder in terms of piratical usability, AF is super fast and accurate, quiet. the mirror damp so nicely that I can get decent result at 2/F. Infinity sharpness is tough test for any system handhold, and Nikon did much better than Leica S. But I should not blame Leica given they have much bigger mirror to move and they don't have deep experience Nikon have.
But after use it in portrait range handhold, I find worry is gone, for portraits that I do and love, micro contrast is not much an issue to me, the system has much better damp than Haselblad 500 I had before, the image is sharp enough for me even hand hold at 2/F. (1/30 for 70mm) and both lens perform superb at close range. There are virtually no CA or any aberration at close range, Bokeh is extreme smooth, with huge viewfinder, shooting manual is blessed.
Now why I love it and choose it over D810 if I have to: I have to say the system is novel, and leica is really smart to make it DSLR like operation and shape with best of best lens selection. the view finder is almost 100%,(not really but feel so) I can shoot both eye open with 70mm lens. The lens have the best MF feeling I had from any AF lens, because of lack of aberration, and equivalent f2 DOF in FF, shooting manual is a dream. The file is like super charged M9 with more push pull capability, even more tolerant for exposure error. and I love its color even I can improve myself further with more time on it.
I don't feel the system is for anyone. I sold my D700, and I miss it so much. But I get myself a super charged D700 now It do everything I ask D700 to do but with more, the lens is better, the view finder is better, file is better or at least same for portrait. In hand, S2 feel so great. This is best manual focus body and portrait camera I have ever used. This reason is good enough for me to keep the system. No matter what others say or think, Document family every day life is what I love to do and the reason I am into photography. My best work are always my family pictures. I bought Leica R lens for them, now I even bought Leica S2 for them. Insane? I know. but it is worth every penny to me
Ron, I am aim 125 for next lens. but do 100cron look great
